The 2023 Offseason Thread

OK, just to be clear, we will create space for the tag, and its extremely likely to happen. I hope he signs an extension before then, but I have low expectations of an extension happening in the next 6 weeks, which is when you need it to happen.
and as I said, initially only the non exclusive amount counts against the cap, until the last day of restrictive free agency, which is 5 days prior to the draft. Once we get to that point, the entire exclusive franchise tag counts against the cap. This gives us some flexibility.

Who we want from the Bucs roster? And why is his name Mike Evans?

For me the biggest question is does Lamar want to play here, or is it solely about getting paid so he can say he's the highest paid player in the game? I get that he feels the current offer is low in this market but I'm more curious about his attitude. Is staying in Baltimore his desire?

What if we traded Lamar, got a haul of picks and signed Hopkins and Rodgers. Damn
It worked with McNair for one season , kinda , McNair wasn't all that great in 2006 but he was a steadying force

I think so. He has a tattoo of a Raven on his chest.

He got a tattoo of a football with raven wings across his whole chest. He just want Stevie B to stop playing with his money.

If anyone is Godwin, moving on from Evans doesnt give them much cap relief.

I just get the feeling, knowing how the Ravens love draft picks, that if Lamar is the subject of trade talks in the days leading up to the draft that some team is just gonna have to have him and be willing to give him what he wants, that he's gone. Trading him negates any salary cap trouble, it allows us to be aggressive in FA, and its a proactive move for continuity not having it rear its ugly head again next year if he doesn't sign an extension.

Man if we tag Lamar just trade him. I’m sick of the drama and don’t want to be handicapped by the money implications

Wonder how he’s been since coming back from that ACL injury. I know he started slow that season. Wonder if he’s all the way back yet

We’re always gonna have money problems. I rather have money problems with a QB on the team though.

Right but its somewhat semantics though. It helps give you a little more cushion during opening of FA, but basically you'll end up having to do at least a couple contract restructures to fit in the increase when it occurs.

The way I look at it:

You need $31M by the time FA opens for the franchise tag. That puts us $3M over the cap right now. Realistically, you probably want to be able to have $10M in cap space when FA opens. That means you need to shed $13M by the time FA opens, at a minimum. Cutting Clark, Edwards and Duvernay gets you most of the way there.

But then assuming he sticks on the exclusive tag, you'll need to create at least $10-15M more by Draft Day. That pretty much has to come via contract restructures most likely.

The only way to avoid that is either don't do the exclusive tag at all (not really an option I don't think) or sign him long term. Otherwise its just delaying the inevitable.

exactly how I look at it. A bit more flexibility for a little bit of time and of course you'll need to 13m more in your back pocket.

If you're waiting until near or on draft day to trade him, FA is largely in the rearview mirror.

It'll free up cap space, but there's really not many good players to sign in May.

Trading him just opens up cap space that you'd roll a large chunk into 2024, in which case you'd have heaps and heaps of $ to spend.

What's the point of being aggressive in FA though if you don't have a QB? I'd be surprised if they're overly concerned about big names in FA at this point, regardless of the decision. I highly doubt they're going to rush this thing so they can participate in the annual overpayers banquet.

Lamar has done absolutely nothing to promote deserving a fully guaranteed contract. I get how he sees his leverage, but the browns only gave it to watson because they were out of the race and used that as a final all out bid to have a chance.

you can't finish 3 straight seasons not on the field and want fully guaranteed that's actually comical to me.
don't misinterpret this as me saying we shouldn't pay him what's fair, but if we offer 50+ mil a year and higher guarantees than Patrick fucking mahomet, you better play like or match Patrick fucking mahomes

we are talking about a qb with 1 playoff win and a qb who has 5 straight home afc championship appearances.

And yet I am happy with Lamar.
