Lamar Jackson

I think that's speculation rather than reporting.

If they did it for Watson, teams will do it for Lamar. It wasn't just a Browns outlier thing, plenty of teams were willing to give up a lot of money and picks for Watson despite the baggage. Cleveland just went a bit further to get it done. I think that will happen again.
I think your thoughts are much, much more speculative than the reports. lol

The posts from Sarah are probably some of the most trustworthy, she generally doesn’t put BS out there.

And I don't. A bunch of picks and a bunch of money isn't the same thing as $230M gtd over five years. Seems pretty clear nobody else was willing to come close to that.
If they were, he'd probably be playing elsewhere, since he told the Browns they were out 48 hours before signing there.

Can't say its not an outlier until its actually not an outlier.

Ah fml... It's over. It's not like we're 20 or even 60 to 80m apart.
Will be hard to find a team willing to pay that much
Well, again, the $100M apart thing isn't real. The $100M apart is the difference in the gtd at signing amounts. Every contract in the league is by that logic $100M below Watson's deal, because nobodies come close to getting that kind of gtd $ at signing.

The $133M isn't the total gtd $. It's just what's gtd at signing. There's a difference. The players going to end up getting more than that most likely, because the cap structure won't allow the team to move off of them until past that point.

Murray's "practical" guarantees are north of $180M.

This is what I keep hitting on. Everyone says a team will do the same thing, but virtually every team that would theoretically be in on Lamar had the same opportunity to do it and declined on Watson. People keep touting the Falcons in particular who were putting on the full recruiting pitch for Watson and had a chance to match, but backed down when they learned it was fully guaranteed. Watson did not want to go to Cleveland.

So this is the new trend? NFLPA acting as player agents? From a players perspective I suppose this is a good thing but the salary structures (and I use that term lightly) will explode.
When they don't have agents, sure.

I mean I think the NFLPAs stance is fine. I think their objective is to get to a point where there's multiple teams interested in Lamar, so they can get the best price possible. Which is totally fine. NFLPA has long hated the franchise tag, though they never have the balls to stand up for against it in the CBA negotiations, because it impacts such a small % of the player pool.

NFLPA wants Lamar to be the second guy to get the fully gtd deal, so that it changes it for everybody. Watson wasn't enough to get it done, and the NFLPA knows that. Frankly if the NFLPA had any morals at all, they would have campaigned against the Watson deal, but that's a different discussion.

The collision course I'm waiting for is when, after all this posturing, Lamar gets traded, and gets a better deal than the Ravens offered from somebody else, but comes up considerably short on what he was asking for. Then the market will have denied the NFLPA what it wanted, and order will be restored.

So we're trading for DHop AND we're using a first round pick on a WR? Are we playing with two footballs? Or are we including Bateman or Andrews in the trade for DHop?

The thing I love the most about these posts is that when you really think about

JSN, Bateman, Andrews, and DHOP is nuts and completely unrealistic. Either you trade for DHOP or draft a receiver. No both.

Would have made more sense to say we either draft a receiver or trade for one and draft the best CB we can find.

Well you can trade for a veteran AND draft a WR. Maybe even multiple WRs. It just wouldn't be a first rounder for me.

In my opinion, the goal of the offseason for the WR position should be to obtain a quality veteran OR use a high draft pick on a WR (first rounder), plus add depth via both.

So I would be looking at one of two scenarios:
1. Trade/sign a quality WR + use a mid-round draft pick (or two) on a WR
2. Use a first rounder on a WR + sign a cheaper, veteran FA WR. Possibly double dip later in the draft (day 3) on another WR.

Y’all think Lamar’s goal here is bigger than himself? Y’all think he’s trying to be the guy that changes how players are compensated? Maybe he thinks he’s the guy who can change the game by following up the contract that owners swear is an aberration with another fully guaranteed deal making it a trend that can’t be dismissed, pushing the nfl closer towards guaranteed deals. If it goes watson>Lamar>burrow 3 years in a row then the game done changed, I don’t think Lamar is gonna relent. According to reports every single contract offer was countered by Lamar just saying fully guaranteed or no deal, idk how true it is but this is being reported by Bobby trosset and Sarah Ellison who are t exactly clickbaiters and kneejerkers

I am surprised at scenario 2. Specifically double dipping at receiver. I have not been a fan of our mid round WR picks. (Duv did look good for a stretch though)

Maybe the picture below might come into fruition after all.

In all seriousness, I can see it. I think he realizes that his ability to hurt teams as a dual-threat will slow diminish with each year as he gets older. Might as well try to get a fully gtd. contract sine he feels like he can make an argument for it since Watson got one. Maybe he always felt that players deserve fully gtd. deals and sees Watson as the precedent.

Tbh I think the unions goals are bigger than Lamar’s and he is the pawn., but I digress. I hope it works out for him.

Right but our long term strategy at WR can't just involve first round picks and veterans. Veterans are too expensive, and you can't build a WR core through just first rounders.
They need to continue to draft mid-round WRs. Probably more frequently than they have been.

A lot of analysts would tell you to target 2nd rounders, specifically, which we've historically not done. Beyond the 3rd round the WR position historically falls off a cliff, so the expectations for anybody you draft after day 2 are going to be low anyway. But they can serve as respectable depth.

I'm watching First Take right now and Stephen A just said that someone on Lamar's team/camp/whatever reached out to him yesterday about the contract. He's saying that

-Lamar has never asked for a fully gtd. deal
-Ravens FO stopped at $133M gtd. I'm still convinced that this had to be the gtd. amount at signing compared to the full amount.

Really? Do we believe that someone on Lamar's side opened up?

If so, then it's good news

At this point, bruh, I don't even know what to say. Like.....I want to ignore all of this speculation, but dammit, it pulls me back IN.

It's pretty spicy, not going to lie lol

However if Smith really reached out to them and they said this is all nonsense then that's somewhat of a relief lol
