Signings, Cuts, Trades

Right, but from a "what they bring to the team" perspective, I think their skill sets are comparable.

Cost is certainly a factor, but then again, that's also baked into production. Dez hasn't played football in over 2 years, whereas Ertz has been an extremely high productive player for the last two years.

If they were both healthy, one of these guys would slot into an immediate starting, high snap role on Sunday. The other is signing to a PS, is no lock to ever get called up, and may make no impact whatsoever.

I would gladly take Ertz for $4M over Dez for $0.5M or whatever the vet minimum would be. Its just hard to do that now, when we don't have $4M to spend.

That's why I suggested that perhaps these discussions for an Ertz trade took place before we pulled the trigger on Yannick, and certainly before Ertz landed on IR.
thats why i said it would be poor way to allocate resources, rather than ertz would be a bad pickup. if we could get ertz the same way we just picked up dez then im taking ertz over dez without hesitation lol, but if were tight against the cap and working with 5 draft picks, then yeah give me a free dez.

Ertz would’ve been exciting but obviously not at the cost of Yannick.

Our receivers outside of Hollywood, Mark, Duv and even Boyle look atrocious though. Snead Is MIA and Boykin’s development or lack thereof and mental errors is probably why we signed Dez in the first place (and I’m not excited about him at all). Not enough weapons for Lamar at the moment.

I don't know if I can agree with you that they look atrocious. I think atrocious is how The Ravens young receivers looked in 2013 or 2017. It's interesting how Snead look like Mr Reliable in Marty M offense and now he looks like Mr MIA in Greg Romans offense. I'm not really sure if Boykins development or lack thereof along with mental errors is why we signed Dez Bryant. The Ravens have had interest in signing a veteran receiver way before Boykins actually started playing this year.

I think the August workout was for insurance and a “we’ll see what happens” approach with Boykin. I think signing Dez to the PS tells us they’re not happy with Boykin’s development. I’d like to actually see him be converted to a TE. Think he’d be a great mismatch in the middle of the field and one of the best run blocking TE’s in the league.

I mean... you just listed 3-4 guys that can play. I think most teams would kill to have that many. People like Aaron Rodgers would be salivating to have some of our guys.

I'm not saying they're world-beaters or Buccaneers 2.0, but I'm not sure weapons is the problem. It certainly wasn't the problem last year either.

I think Dez's workout was insurance against injury, combined with the idea that neither Snead, Boykin had separated themselves, and we didn't know enough about Proche or Duvernay at the time to warrant not having fallbacks at WR.

I think the Ravens would have easily signed Dez in August, had he been ready to play football. By all accounts, I'm not sure that he was in football shape or ready to play at that point.

Could have been but honestly from personality stand point this offense needs a guy like Dez Bryant. The Ravens have been great at signing not players that can make plays but players that elevate other players from character stand point. Regardless on how great Miles Boykins would have played he doesn't have the same character like Dez Bryant. He's more on the quiet side atleast for now and honestly I rather see Boykins and Jackson be on the same page more before thinking he needs to convert to tight end. Miles Boykins not perfect but hopefully this video helps for the evaluation process of him so far because I don't think we seen enough of him to grade him on his abilities thus far.

Sounds like Dez's August workout was with the intent of signing him, but he wasn't in football shape at the time. Saw in Zrebiec's replies that they were impressed but he wasn't ready to put on the pads and play. Sounds like they told him to get in better shape and they'd revisit, and that seems to be exactly what happened.

yeah which is a good sign especially as he apparently told other teams he wasnt interested in working out with them

basically it seems like the message in august was: get yourself into better shape and show us this, this and this and we'll bring you into the fold

and fair play to him he seems to have gone away and done the things we've asked of him and furthermore shown a commitment to be in baltimore above other venues

The route concepts look like trash from what I've seen. That seems to be one of the biggest problems with Lamar missing guys as well. Seen a few plays where I though Hollywood had his man BEAT to not even get a look or be overthrown. There's a lack of creativity and I expected more. Thought Culley would help in the passing game but hasn't worked out YET as planned. Still plenty of season left though.

With us interested in Ertz, I hope the plan for Dez is to see if he can play some kind of hybrid role.

anyone know when he’s allowed in to practice?

I wouldn't expect a hybrid role. Ertz is obviously much bigger and a better blocker, but he's also not really known for being an exceptional blocker. I think we're looking for a big-bodied pass catcher that can help in the red zone and in the middle of the field. Both would likely qualify.

In terms of practice, I believe he'll still be subject to the five day COVID testing protocol, so with the signing being announced yesterday, I would imagine that he would basically begin practicing next week. He's on the PS, obviously, so I would think it would take at least a week or two there before (if) they elevate him to active roster. Best guess, assuming he progresses and actually earned a roster spot, would be you wouldn't see him until at least the Patriots/Titans games, at the earliest. Could be later than that.

He's been through the protocol and should be on the field today. He's been in Baltimore since late last week and went through all of the testing prior to his signing.

Sounds good.

I still wouldn't expect him to suit up for the Colts game in 11 days, barring any injuries that would require a call-up.

No completely agreed. Think we're looking at 2 games on the PS minimum unless he just goes out there and kills it in practice.

Tbh they will active him. Ingram's out that opens one spot on offense. Even if Dez is only at ~65%, he will easily beat out the rest of the guys aka Boykin and Snead.

The guy hasn't played an NFL game in nearly 3 years. I'd be floored if he's out there on Sunday. I'd also be floored if he doesn't play eventually but 3 practices before the most physical game of the year is a dream.

Why? He doesn't fit the mold of a receiver that I think puts this offense over the top.
Not to mention...
1. I don't know why the Texans would move him, especially after they just moved Hopkins. They don't have the look of a rebuilding team to me, especially when they just paid Watson, they can afford to keep Fuller, and that would leave them with just Cooks (massively injury prone) and Cobb (not that far off from retirement) on the depth chart.
2. We don't have the $6M+ it would take to pay him the rest of the year, nor is he under contract for 2021 (and I can't see us giving him a long term deal), so he would be the very definition of an expensive rental.

Apparently we inquired about Thielen during the Yannick talks. I really think we might add someone other than Dez
