The Malaki Starks, the Red Zone Scoring, and the Q4 Jump Scare

Safety is a very high iq position. A bust at safety I feel like will show itself almost immediately, there isn’t a question or a “give it time” period, you’ll spot a bust at safety because they’ll tank your entire game, and starks wasn’t quite doing that.

With starks it felt like a question of is he VERY good, or is he just serviceable? He’s beginning to look like the former.

Still expect ups and downs his rookie year. If our secondary continues to look good, we’re bound to run into OCs and QBs who think starks is a guy they should put in conflict and go after just because he’s a rookie safety.

i think you spot a safety bust high-pick because they just don't get to play
the ones who aren't busts, it's just about how much time it takes to adjust to the speed of the game

Starks looks like he covers so much ground so quickly, his playing speed really stands out.

And yeah keondre Jackson is gonna find himself taking some snaps on defense at this rate, maybe not this year but they’re gonna wanna see what he can do at nickel or something like that next offseason at the latest

regardless, if he's gonna play like this every week (so far so good), he's going to carve out a nice career for himself for 10+ years

I'm not exactly big on Faalele. I've been calling for Corey Bullock to enter the lineup since last year, which I get just seems like a homeless man screaming at pigeons. But even I'll say that this clip is arguably just view farming, albeit it unintentionally.

He guides LOLB Eric Wilson into the seal block. From then, he has Derrick Henry ahead of him as the lead FB, likely to take on the nearest 2nd level defender.

Henry does just that. Slightly late, however, but he clips LILB Blake Cashman. And Faalele is stuck with staying in front of Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, whom funnily enough have LILB and RILB designations. At this stage, Faalele cannot tell where Jackson is, and understandably so. He's mirroring the inside defender of the two, in case Jackson wants to cut inside, meaning he'd take on Allen and Hargrave would be too far outside to factor into the play. Or Jackson can simply outrun the defense to the edge, which will change the trajectory of their pursuit. At which point, none of the linemen at the LOS would be able to make it upfield enough to make contact with a defender. If anything, should Henry have gotten to Cashman, Jackson likely presses the hole faster and doesn't way to then bounce it all the way out. That snapshot of the second image is a Ravens 1st down 9 times out of 10 unless Jackson slips. And also, a hell of a call.

Now, I thought both of our guards struggled. And there were different plays to pick from the bunch. But those are the plays that need to be highlighted. If it helps, most linemen with struggles within the year will have their own dedicated lowlights. I looked up Jonah Savaiinaea on Twitter this was one of the first videos:

The more the struggles, the more these are out there. So the quantity of circulation can very much be a microcosm of how many bad reps are out there. It's just not native to our players and our players alone.

savaiinaea has been one of the worst guards in the league the whole year tbf so not a great guy to compare with

The point being that clips exist of everyone. It's not a direct comparison between the players. Like I said, the worse the player, the more clips in average. But they are inescapable. I looked up Joe Thuney and the first clip was of him getting pushed back by Dexter Lawrence yesterday.

The amount of times these videos can be made is ridiculous. Do the coaches not watch the film? Are they just waiting on Emory Jones to get healthy or something?

Jones is a red shirt and Cleveland would have been out there by now if he was any better. Corey Bullock might be our only hope.

I don’t understand how Monken has so little sense of the flow of the game.

Game 1 against Buffalo playing to punt was stupid because they both have Josh Allen and were scoring at will.

Meanwhile this game it’s effectively a rookie playing poorly and the defense was solid all day. You run the ball on 3rd down and dare them to go 90 yards in 1 minute with 0 timeouts and get a 2pt conversion just to get OT.

The Ricard run made me smile. First time Monken has made me smile all year.

The regression of Faalale, Vorhees and Rosengarten kinda stuck. It's time to acknowledge how much we are missing d'alessandris and start calling for a new OLine coach/running game coordinator. Monken's got his faults, but his route concepts are very nice and Lamara is thriving. It's the running game and OLine that is making these short yardage/goal line situations such a hassle.

yes. I agree that losing D' was a huge loss and is still affecting us.

Pretty good game by the defense. The ravens offense look like it was asleep early on but things got better as the game went on. The offensive line definitely pass blocker better than I thought they would but they still need to get better with their run blocking. Taven Bryan likely had his best game

Your now one game back!

Huge thing I think a lot of us forget is starks is still 21!!! With his birthday next week but still - as someone who literally just completed the age shift 21-23/24 is really when your body is fully developed, not like starks is a physically built demon or anything but more confidence along with him continuing to grow into his body is huge.

Marlo was the same age when we drafted him and by his 2nd season he was pretty feared and elite by the 23rd real life age

Im wondering why vikes didnt attack marlo more. Dude had on a cast. The int he caught was the only int he couldve caught with that cast on.. also, vikes made some terrible 3rd and 1 calls. Mfs were looking for the big play on those downs

Think they just have a young QB who isn’t quite ready. Lots of poor choices in the game. I like what McCarthy can be but he’s not a great processor yet.

I don't think him playing with a cast would disrupt his ability to defend in coverage specifically. I think it impacts his ability to tackle and to catch the ball (which he won't be doing a lot of regardless). If he were like a linebacker, I'd have gigantic concerns. But I think its really only hampering his ability to tackle.
