Coaching Carousel 2026

Mike McDaniel is clearly the most accomplished OC option on the market
the 2 questions with bringing him in as OC:

1) Does he get any HC job offers anywhere (including here lol)
2) Is he going to be here for more than a year and is that long enough to build offensive infrastructure to last

my guess is that a team who wants his scheme for the long-term, may have to offer him a HC job

i worry mcdaniels offense is another one that’s gonna get too cute and outsmart itself. His pass designs are kinda gimmicky and they get figured out, run game couldn’t pick up the slack, and since the easy solution to defend mcdaniels pass game is just 2 high that also hurts Lamar’s scrambling ability.

I’d need to see proof that he can formulate a run game without relying on a gimmick passing game to stretch the field first.

He could very well be another guy whose prime has come and gone as DCs around the league have figured out the best way to defend him.

Anthony Weaver really impressive from the way he talks. He might not be as flashy as a play caller like Brian Flores and others but neither did Mike Vrabel when he called plays for the Texans in 2017.

My problems with McDaniel are a few things:

1. I still remember him keeping guys in late in the 4th quarter against us when they had no chance of winning. That was when Chubb had a season ending injury and it was late in the year too
2. Harbaugh has mostly owned McDaniel as a HC.
3. McDaniel’s team gives me vibes of Billick where you have players heavily leading the team. I don’t think that fits what Steve wants

I just don’t think he fits what we would want at the position

The biggest problem with Weaver in my eyes is that he's not going to offer you much from a gameplanning point of view that gives an edge. He's often been lauded for his leadership ability but he's not some schematic genius and the results of his two play calling stints have not been great. It's basically swapping one CEO-type for another.

his run game is one of the more creative run games in the league
took the shanahan rushing offence and added even more juice to it

he's also a creative innovator - he was the guy who started the whole cheat motion trend that the rest of the league immediately stole

he's the stereotypical mad scientist offensive genius type cooking up the Xs and Os in a lab

from what i can tell (Tua aside), the big issues for that offence have been awful OL play

he's shown adaptability - that offence went from that bombs away, RPO heavy explosive passing attack to open up the running game in 2022, to a more run-focused offence with lots of outside zone in 2023, then as the OL got worse and Tua got more and more injured he used a lot more quick game stuff in 2024

just didnt have any talent to work with in 2025...
Awful OL, starting WR trio of Waddle, Cedrick Wilson and Malik Washington, traded their only good TE Jonnu Smith away to the Steelers and had Darren Waller come out of retirement to play

1. Yes that was idiotic. I hope he's learned.
2. McDaniel was working with a terrible GM therefore roster. In terms of scheme he offers something innovative. Harbaugh held a playsheet once.
3. I don't know enough to comment on either of those things

exactly this
despite him being a defensive guy, you're still not getting the benefit of that - he might as well have the special teams background harbs had because you're still going to be hiring coordinators/playcallers on both offence and defence

He offers a 2nd hand version of Mike MacDonald's scheme, a bit like Orr (and Minter tbh). I thought he did Ok with that, despite a lack of talent.

Maybe, but I thought really impressive that he managed to come up with a system that would work with Tua and one of the NFL's worst O lines. That offense would have been unwatchable with a lot of playcallers. I don't know if that's all he's got, given that Shanahan tried to keep him hidden for years and didn't want to make him OC for that reason.

I'd like to see what he could come up with for Lamar and a lot more talent.

at least with Minter, you've seen him have success with less talent than the ravens have here and he's done it over 2 years as well
seems like of the macdonald "tree", Minter seems to be the only one who can actually replicate any of the success

weaver you've only seen have poor defences as a playcaller - and they picked orr over weaver
orr's been terrible
wilson's been ok with terrible talent but nothing special

but minter's had good defences with not much talent

to me, if people are interested in klint kubiak, they should be excited about mike mcdaniel

I was told rather matter of factly that they view(ed) Weaver as a much better HC candidate than a DC candidate, so they definitely know the schematic limitations going in.

Minter is definitely the top of the Mike MacDonald tree but I don't think we should give up on it just because we picked the wrong guy in Orr. I'd be very happy with Wilson or Weaver as DC. (Unless Flores wants that job.)

i would not be happy with weaver as DC
i'd be interested in dennard wilson potentially coming back depending on who else is available

When it comes to the run game, when healthy, he had Mostert finish a season with 18 TDS. Achane finished 5th this year in rushing 1350 yards with less touches than the other guys in the top 5.

I would love for the Ravens to bring him in the building and talk to him
