I think Saleh has moved up to my number one choice. Look how injured the 49ers are and they still are very competitive and winning games. Look at how we lose one guy and it seems our defense falls apart. Look at how many guys the 49ers have lost and they haven't fallen apart when they should.

Saleh, Kubiak or Mike McDaniel.

To be fair, eagles offense is terrible! Not because of players neither

you could not be more wrong

hamilton is good enough that he can play as a deep safety but his best and most impactful position is to be close to the LoS where he can be more multiple and involved in disguising coverage, where he can move around to manipulate matchups, where you can have him man-covering both slot WRs and TEs and also be in position to absolutely destroy screens and other quick run-adjacent passing plays

you lose all of that skillset by having him just sit deep and play as a single-high or split safety - which he still gets to do within the scheme anyway

if you just want someone to sit in the deep middle or sit in a cover 2 for 60 plays a game, you dont need to spend 1st round picks on those guys

I'm not saying that he isn't impactful in those situations that you point out, I get it. I agree that he's great and he does everything he's asked to do well, even exceptional. I'm just sticking to that's his versatility in a poorly manned DEF. Would he still be asked to do occasionally what he's doing now - reading and blitzing and staying put and getting back in and from the middle - yeah, but in his natural position, with decent players underneath, he would be in his natural position and, imo - Heaven forbid, be even more impactful.

I think you're putting too much stock into "natural position" for the most positionless player in the league currently. He was certainly an effective and calming presence in the deep half for a struggling defense in 2024, but that took away some of his playmaking ability. He made a lot more plays and caused a lot more chaos by playing around the LOS in 2025.

That Steelers tape pretty much says it all - effective back end with Hamilton roaming around the LOS. Once he went out, the whole thing fell apart. He impacts the deep part of the field without even having to play there, because he's so disruptive up front.

I'm not saying I want a passive coach by any means, but there have been a lot of points passed up in these playoff games... and these games have ended close. I don't know when it got uncool to take the points, but yikes it's been impactful this weekend.

So many of these coaches we are watching in these playoff games are better than Harbaugh . Saleh was impressive in particular

That being said, the same was said about Aaron Glenn last year. He did a nice job with a seriously wounded Lions defense.

The Jets are a disaster and I'm sure Saleh would do better in his second chance, I'm just not 100% sure. There were a lot of times he looked overwhelmed in NY.

Didn't seem like Aaron Rodgers respected him either and I know Rodgers has a personality that isn't likable but sometimes a veteran player just knows a good head coach when he sees one

Lions defense wasn't very good last year and Saleh did a lot better with a Jets defense with the same guys

Saleh has a long history of great defenses, unlike Glenn. And he made a top 5 defense on the Jets that immediately collapsed when he got fired.

So, thinking about it, as someone who preferred an offensive-minded coach, I'm not so sure I care anymore. I say that because there are some pretty good QBs in the NFL and having a defensive-minded HC means you can have someone who can take down those guys consistently. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Brock Purdy, etc. There's value in shutting down these guys.

I don't think Oweh's performance is his fault. If anything, I'll blame it on Orr & Harbaugh. Oweh also doesn't have the edge talent around him that he does with the LAC.

Oweh is a good example, though, because he was traded mid-season. It isn't like Oweh had a whole offseason to learn under a new coach who flipped a switch. I credit the change in Oweh to the following:

1. Oweh is playing well and not complacent.
2. Minter is putting him in position to succeed.
3. Oweh is surrounded by other Edge talent making his job easier.
4. Oweh isn't really a starter, and I think his snap count is down making him fresh.
