On the flip side, if a team makes it far and then loses their coach, there’s slim pickings for who they can backfill with. The whole process is full of disadvantages.
When I say long career, I'm not talking about age. They're genuinely considering the possibility that he is the most well equipped to have another 18 year HC run.
Other teams seem to be thinking similarly based on the reports of how he's done in his interviews.
While I think Kingsbury would be bad, I also think we are past the development part. Lamar is entering year 9. We are well past development and are on the “use the prime” part of the career.Kingsbury feels like a step backwards in Lamar's development.
Maybe so. I think there's plenty of other teams that are in a position to hire him and be patient with his development as a coach. Likely because they don't have the talent to win now and it'll take years to get there. I just don't see that being the case here. When I say long career, I'm not talking about age. I don't disagree for what it's worth. But if they think he's the best candidate, that's the way they're going to go, age and experience be damned.Maybe so. As I said above, while there's this perception that Steve is a patient man that will give a long runway for a HC, I'd argue we haven't seen that at all, and I would be quite surprised if a new HC came in and struggled for like 3-4 years and Steve stuck with them. He wants to win and he wants to win now.
Plus I think Steve knows that he probably won't be around to hire the next HC either way.
One of the things they're prioritizing in this search is someone that can connect with the younger players. They feel that was one of the biggest downfalls this year, and probably one of the biggest reasons Harbaugh and Monken are gone. I'm being slightly facetious here, but it sounds like the "you better figure this shit out or you're running laps" mindset was highly ineffective, and they felt that those 2 guys (plus some others) weren't really able to adapt from that mindset they've held for their whole careers. They're looking for someone who can hold these guys accountable, but are also looking for someone that is more of a teacher or is selling the idea of putting more teachers around himself. And my final note on this is that it wasn't necessarily any bad blood in the locker room - just felt like it hit a state where it wasn't connecting.
And also related, apparently that's why Davis Webb has them very intrigued. He's young himself, but apparently the vibes in that QB room in Denver are immaculate and he did really well selling himself on how he created that culture. They know it's a risk and feel it may be a tad early for him to ascend that far, but impressive is impressive and they are highly interested.
This damn near brings a figurative tear to my eye. Music to my ears. Kubiak and Minter being the presumptive favorites is music to my ears. I wonder how they feel about Saleh.
Bills have a history of firing coaches that aren't successful early. So do the Ravens. Ted Marchibroda was fired after three years.
The reason Billick and Harbaugh lasted a long time is because they won and won early. Billick won a SB in his second year. Harbaugh was in a conference championship game as a rookie HC.
I don't think the Ravens are really any more or less "stable" from a HC position than any other franchise. They've just been more successful at finding quality coaches. If we hire somebody and we miss the playoffs the first 3 years, especially without going through a rebuild, I'd bet heaps and heaps of $ Steve will fire them.
We actually don't know what Steve will do if the next HC doesn't win and win early. He wasn't the majority owner when we hired Billick, and obviously John won a ton early. We know that he became majority owner in 2004, and he fired a SB winning coach within four years because he didn't win.
Don't take my words as there's a huge gap. I think the two teams are close, I just give Baltimore an edge due to owner & FO. I do think we are better from the outside there. With that said, I think HC candidates wouldn't blink at a Buffalo HC offer. I doubt they will wait on us, is what I am agreeing with. I'm just saying I think Lamar, DeCosta & Bisciotti are more attractive than Allen, Beane, Pegula. In terms of the FO, I don't think they've done enough to build up pass catchers around Allen, but then again, they seem to have a roster good enough to beat damn near everybody in the AFC not named Mahomes. And they've beaten him plenty of times in the regular season as well. Defensively they're strong in pass coverage and at pass rush, and they pretty consistently have a good Oline.
I don't think it's the world's best FO, but I don't think people can argue that the roster construction isn't good enough.
While I think Kingsbury would be bad, I also think we are past the development part. Lamar is entering year 9. We are well past development and are on the “use the prime” part of the career.
So the Bills fired McDermott but promoted their GM who should be fired as well to... President of Football Operations. I guess this means they will hire a new GM? It's kind of ridiculous that more Head Coaches get fired for the General Manager's terrible roster building and not the GM himself.
Well if you told someone heading into Week one that both Harbaugh & McDermott would be fired at the end of the season, people would think you were crazy.
Sounds about right. I'm glad to hear that on Kubiak. I think Mike's endorsement is a big one. I know Mike would talk him up anyway but it is a nice thing to hear from a guy with a good connection here.Alright, the texts are flowing hot and heavy this morning. Giving my caveat that things are moving so fast... by time I type this out, something could have easily changed.

With that, some of the old heads they've interviewed have kind of ruled themselves out of the gig by having the same mindset. They want something different.

It sounds like Webb and the 2 OGs (Kubiak and Minter) are the presumptive favorites right now. But they really like a handful of other guys and would like to get a couple of them in the final round to give them a shot to sell themselves in person. They know Zoom and being in a much more controlled environment only tells so much.
On Kubiak specifically, apparently Mike Mac gave him a glowing review, and it's not too dissimilar from the guy Mike Mac is himself. Kubiak isn't some outwardly enthusiastic leader, but he's got a quiet command of his unit and they all know what their responsibilities are.
It's probably too early but people said the same about Sean McVay. If you wait a year or two he won't be here. If you feel that confident, you take the risk and go for it if he's the best candidate.I don't completely hate the idea of Webb, I just feel like it's too early. I understand all the allure, but this is also a mostly veteran team that's in win-now mode. I'd love him for a team getting a rookie QB that can grow through a rebuilding effort, but I just don't feel like we're the group for it.
Even if they weren't directly calling plays, all of the "young OC's" like McDaniel, McVay, etc. all were OC's for at least a year or two before they got HC gigs.
Kubiak and Minter make all the sense in the world. Trouble spot with Kubiak or even Webb is that one of the two you won't be able to do full in-person interviews for another week, and the one that advances you won't be able to hire for effectively three weeks.
I don't think anyone will be "CEO" type because they do want an X & O guy. They said that. That doesn't mean they don't bring the CEO element.I mean I guess. The youthful aspect doesn't really matter in the context of those three. Minter is the oldest at 42. He could coach for 20+ years. And I don't think anybody is naive enough to think whoever we hire will be here for 20+ years, regardless of how well they perform.
There's also no clear indication of what type of offense he would prefer to run, if he would call plays at all, etc. And I think he's less likely to be able to attract quality DCs, since he hasn't been in the league long.
If he's supposed to be the "CEO type" but younger, it'd be a hard pass for me.
Hard to say what Beane did vs. what McDermott wanted. I said it with Harbaugh, but the GM & HC surely work together to draft & sign guys.So the Bills fired McDermott but promoted their GM who should be fired as well to... President of Football Operations. I guess this means they will hire a new GM? It's kind of ridiculous that more Head Coaches get fired for the General Manager's terrible roster building and not the GM himself.

So many pieces of Harbaugh's end of term were soooo tiring.not surprising - we could feel how stale it was from here and we only got snippets they actually broadcast to us
as soon as someone like Webb gets playcalling experience he's going to get snapped up - if you're confident he's going to be successful, being early isn't an issue as long as you think he can build a staff that will respect him
