Around the NFL: News and Rumors

I’m in favor for standing for the National anthem but passing a rule forcing people or be penalized is fucking stupid. The NFL has far bigger fish to fry than the kneeling. Anyone who thinks the kneeling is the big reason they’re losing fans has no ability to think big picture whatsoever or is a sheep. The nfl’s ratings were on the fucking decline before Kaepernick decided to kneel. People are once again missing the point and everyone is acting like a total moron. The nfl is too dumb to realize that this is only going to make the problem worse or do nothing in the grand scheme of thing. They decided to alienate the other party... meaning even if they regain the old fans, they’ll lose just as many on the other side. This is a net 0 situation.

Does Goddell have any business acumen? At all?

Fucking idiots

I know Goodell has made his fair share of mistakes. I cannot question his business acumen though. When he took over as commissioner in 2006 total annual NFL revenue was $ 6.5B now it is up to $ 14B annually. Goodell’s contract extension that could be worth up to $ 200M over five years shows that the NFL owners approve of how he handles NFL business.

Definitely knows what he's doing on the business side of things. Revenue figures are in $B though.

Maybe the NFL peaked. It was only gonna stay so popular so long. I will still love football and the Ravens for a long time but the NFL has too many problems.

Moves like this make me really hope the reborn XFL is successful and the NFL loses some of their audience drawing players. Maybe then the owners will realize how dumb of a move this is. I seriously doubt it happens though.
My entire point of view here.. .I don't care about the anthem protests. I'm a bleeding heart American through and through. I'd die for my country if I had to.. I love the opportunities..

I don't care. "But you didn't want us to sign Kaepernick". I hate Kaepernick for many reasons, the anthem isn't really a consideration for me... I want us to sign Eric Reid and would've been so happy with we traded for Bennett so I don't care.. I think this entire situation is dumb. I think taking it too personally.. Also dumb.

But this is a dumb way to go about things. You may get your damn fans you lost back, but you're sure as hell going to lose just as many on the other side. I mean, a PENALTY? The owners didn't want it to affect the game.. Guess what. THIS AFFECTS THE GAME. Don't force people to do things. It's the quickest way to piss people the fuck off

Mandating loyalty. What's the worst that could happen?

To be fair guys, yes the NFL is forcing them to stand but the NFL revised the rule of it being mandatory to be on the field for the anthem. Saying those players who wont stand can stay in the locker room until the anthem is over.

Also NBA mandates their players stand for the anthem so what's the big deal about the NFL doing the same?

If you wanted any more evidence on how the NFLPA is going to view this here's a statement from Chris Long:

I think we're gonna see widespread anthem protests again which is 100% not what the NFL wanted...
we're either going to see potentially entire teams stay in the locker room or we're gonna see entire teams kneel again because the NFL won't suspend everyone and part of the monetary penalty apparently falls on the teams somewhat - and therefore the owners

if the NFLPA really unites the players on this issue they could really put the NFL in a serious bind

This entire debate started under wrong premise. The question shouldn't be whether everybody should stand up for the anthem, it should be whether the anthem should be played before every game in the competition played only by American teams.

Yeah, I’m not understanding all of the anger here. There’s really no perfect way to do it but they are attempting to take the political protesting out of the sport which is what the majority of their customers want.

i guess it just doesnt seem to be well thought through - the inevitable consequences of this seem to be that they set up an antagonistic relationship between the players and the NFL - that feels like politics is going to become more prevalent not less... but hey maybe im wrong

Kaepernick started kneeling in protest of police brutality. So yes this whole thing started under a completely different premise and somehow Kaep brought the Anthem into it which had nothing to do with police brutality. Kaep even talked about how police were killing and basically getting away with it by paid suspensions/leave.

I think the Anthem should be played before every game but does it have to be televised?

Forced patriotism doesn't sit well with me under any circumstances.

in almost every other country, in most major sports the anthem is not part of any domestic league...
and not every player in the NFL is from the US either...
and Kaep had a platform and he used that platform to bring recognition to an issue he feels strongly about - whatever you think about that, you cannot argue that it was an ineffective protest given the narrative and conversation that sprung from it no matter what happens to the rest of his NFL career...

like with most protests, you grandstand using something that will get noticed in order to bring light to other issues

That's true but now the players are mad because they have an OPTION to be on the field for the anthem or stay in the locker room?

I think there is one thing we can all agree on no matter the stance on this subject. The NFL once again messed up and took an over reaction reaction to this issue.

it's because they are being forced to stand when they are out there - and symbolically it erases any dissent which is important to remember

this was never about the anthem in and of itself - it was about the right to protest the anthem and that has now been removed (obviously it was originally about Kaep and the politics of police shootings etc. but the mass protests were a response to the push back against protests)
