Signings, Cuts, Trades

I love the depth of our D-line right now. I'm also very bullish on how they will be utilized under Mike McD! He has proven to use the players to their strengths. I think Oweh and Bowser will shine too. Can you imagine how McD will be able to use our secondary depth? He could go 6 strong in the secondary if he chose to. We are going to be a very fast defense.

We'll the reason to sign someone now if they're now is if you believe there is someone in particular who fits what you want to do and ensure that you get that guy. There clearly doesn't seem to be that guy for the Ravens

or that person isnt healthy enough yet to need to rush to sign them (will fuller coming off the hand and OBJ who's likely not back until november) - fuller's unlikely to be signed until he can pass a physical and OBJ is probably going to be signed much later in the process because of that season-beginning injury

Why is Fuller hand not good to go? Hasn't it been quite awhile? OBJ for sure will be signed much later

Does anyone know what this years PS rules are in 2022-23. I know the new CBA had it increasing to 14 players, but those rules haven't been followed, for obvious reasons the last few seasons.

i read a while back that he'd be fine for training camp - i assumed that meant that he wouldnt necessarily be ready for offseason workouts but idk
ive seen basically no buzz about fuller all offseason from anyone so had assumed the hand was the reason because he's still a valuable starter-level contributor when he's healthy

That makes sense!

Jeff throwing a lot of smoke about Chuck Clark in his mentions today. Said on a podcast this morning that the Ravens continue to discuss him with multiple teams and opined that there's not going to be a return that will make fans happy if a trade comes to fruition. Also mentioned that he thinks Clark was hoping to get his contract addressed heading into the offseason, but the Hamilton pick made him realize that ain't happening and has spurred more of these talks.

What does there's not going to be a return that will make fans happy if a trade comes to fruition mean?

People are hoping for something worthwhile in a return. He hasn't said it directly, but alluding to the fact that it might be a late rounder is all.

I see. But then why trade him? Maybe for the same reason as Hollywood which is he no longer wants to be here.

Yeah it's that. I don't think they necessarily want to trade him for nothing but it's clear his time in nearing an end here whether that's this year or next year, so if you can get something and hand the keys over to the long term solution in Hamilton, you might as well.

We purple shade wearers think he’s going for a 3rd, when he’s probably going for a 6th. At that point, we might as well keep him for depth.

I'm intrigued to see what he thinks his "value" in FA is. He's not getting paid a ton ($2.75M this year) but I'm really not sure what he thinks he should be making.
I mean his AAV is $5.1M, but a lot of that was in signing bonus.

Well I think day 3 pick was always the most likely. And probably not a high one.
I guess there is "value" in creating the perception that you won't hold players hostage who don't want to be here. But I agree... our team is better with him on it, and I'm not getting rid of him for that price.
If he's pissed, he can be pissed.

This is strictly my opinion, but I think it's more about getting some guaranteed money on his next contract more than an average value or anything. For instance, if he's here and fades out in favor of Hamilton over the course of the season, he may be looking more at a 1 year deal next year to try to rehab value. Could work. Could not work. I get the sense based on all of the "reports" that he'd rather go elsewhere, be the unquestioned guy, and try to get a multi-year deal to get a shot at some more guaranteed money. Nothing guaranteed for him in either scenario but the potential future earnings are probably higher if he's not playing for the Ravens this year.

Agree. I just think his guaranteed money is going to be limited to one year in pretty much all cases. That's one year more than he gets here, and he'll certainly get a signing bonus from somebody too.
The issue I have is that I'm not totally convinced another team is just going to do a new contract with him on a trade.
Like if I'm the acquiring team, he's got two years and about $6M left on his deal. I'd just keep him on that. Maybe I do a little guaranteed in there, but I'm not highly motivate to lock him up for multiple years, especially when he's cheap.
His best chances of getting max value is to get cut, which we won't do this year.
I do understand he'd probably get a better opportunity to play elsewhere though.
In all likelihood, its probably just a "betrayal" thing. It may not even be about the money anymore. I'm not sure any team has ever made a bigger investment in Safety in one offseason than the Ravens have this year. And he's probably asking why...

It's less about this year and more about next year if I had to guess. Chances are pretty high that he's on the FA market come the end of the 2022 season and that's where the money factor comes in. If he's in Baltimore for the season, he might have to settle for a 1 year deal on the open market because he's almost surely going to be playing less and less as the season progresses. If he plays 100% of the snaps elsewhere, maybe he can secure another 3y/$15M dollar deal with like $6M guaranteed, just to throw out a random number assuming he plays some solid ball. And maybe that's with the team that acquires him. Essentially, it's a virtual guarantee that he can't get another deal here in Baltimore so getting out now might increase his potential future earnings.
