Signings, Cuts, Trades

Thanks. When I compare to other players around the league, with the exception of Lamar waiting one additional year, it seems like Qb's re-up every 3 years which would fall in line with Jackson signing this offseason
It's what they did with Flacco, too, all those years ago.

I don't think we'll see another deal like Aaron Rodgers in 2013 where his cap hits were basically identical throughout the course of the entire deal. Teams now seem to be operating on three years when they lay the cap out for these deals.

Linderbaum is probably wrapped up last offseason for a much lower price if there was more traction on a Lamar deal. They were voiding everything and not committing to long term things while they tried to get their cap in order for all things Lamar.

Damn... so Lamar is the JJ McCarthy of player agents

The team can't do anything about Humphrey or Roquan because the team shot themselves in the foot with restructuring their deals.

I know it's no fault of his own (to a degree), but that Madubuike contract is starting to look mighty awful.

While I would love Lamar to sign an extension, it's not like the team can't restructure his deal and immediately clear out a TON of cap space. Are people forgetting it doesn't have to be an extension only?

People are acting like Lamar is maliciously hurting the team- the team is in a bind because of poor moves made before this season. All Lamar did was sign an extension that the Ravens agreed to with him. And it isn't unprofessional to do things at his own pace.

Yes, I would love for Lamar to sign an extension and help the team clear cap, but he isn't the only reason the Ravens are in a pickle and I think it's weird to act like he is.
So there are several things wrong here:
1. They can absolutely restructure Roquan. They could clear around $7.5M with a simple restructure, and they could do more by adding void years (which he currently has none. Basically just borrow from the '27 cap to pay for '26 if you want.
In fact, I'd be very surprised if he played this year on his current cap hit.
2. Marlon isn't playing this year on his cap hit either. He's either getting a paycut, or they'll again push $ into void years. I'm not sure they'll lower it significantly, but that's a foregone conclusion in my eyes.
3. Restructuring Lamar is certainly an option. The problem with that is, absent an extension, you can't guarantee he'll ever sign one. And if he doesn't, and opts to be a FA in '28, then there's no point in signing these vets or even trading for Crosby, because without a franchise QB on the roster, nobody gives a fuck what the rest of the team looks like.
I think they're going to do it today or tomorrow anyway, but his restructures are the only one's that actually have a material impact on the teams ability to do business short and long term. Absent an extension, the team should basically start planning for either '27 or '28 to be a "cap reset" year, i.e. a year where we do nothing, lose a bunch of games, and see what happens next.

Flacco's deal was egregiously backloaded to make another title run, and that was before teams started using void years to spread out cap hits longer.

I don’t think they necessarily needed to get something done last year but they were at least hoping for some talks and productive discussion to lay the groundwork and they got nothing.

You're right- they can restructure Roquan. I was borrowing the language used by the other poster, but you are right. I think Roquan only saves like $7.5M in a restructure, right? I'd be curious if they'd want to do a restructure or if they'd rather bite the bullet this year and keep him a more viable cut candidate next year because of his level of play last year.

With point two, I'll tie it into point three:

Similar to the above with Roquan, I'd be curious to see if they'd sacrifice future cap for Marlon or just bite the bullet this year and try to get off the hook for some of these bad contracts and start fresh...er.

I believe you were the one who actually brought this up, but the Ravens couldn't have traded for Crosby without the available cap space, right? I thought they just had to be cap compliant before the league year started, but I guess because the trade can't be processed until the new league year, it means they have to be cap compliant to even make the trade, right?

I would imagine that means they have already done something with Lamar, whether that's an extension with the final details being ironed or a restructure. I'll be curious to see which.

They don't technically NEED Lamar to be done at the start of the league year tomorrow. They need to get under the cap but that's like $15M or so (including unknown ERFA tenders) and you could easily get there with a couple of cuts or smaller restructures/contract adjustments.

Erik McCoy got restructured by the Saints. I know Simba had mentioned him as someone the Ravens checked in on, but I don't think that'll be happening anymore.

I'm not really seeing that as options. Cuts are available but that's like $6M I think. They'd have to do Marlon and Roquan simultaneously in order to make that happen.

They're restructuring Crosby (or possibly a whole new deal) the moment FA opens, but they have to be cap compliant when the trade formally processes. So they need to be under.
I could see them doing a smaller-ish restructure of Lamar if they're confident in an extension before season starts.

I figured a new deal had to be done with Crosby immediately. He's only got two years left currently, right? I couldn't imagine the EDC would give up two firsts for a two year rental.

Broderick is almost a forgone conclusion to be cut, so that's $4M right there. And I'd venture to guess they've already touched some of the other contracts but we just don't know about it yet.

Don't get me wrong - Lamar is the key here still, but they do have other options to get to where the need to be imminently without having to touch his deal if that's a route they want to go. Even with the uncertainty surrounding each, they're touching the Humphrey and Madubuike contracts and moving money around there in some shape, form, or fashion.

We can be annoyed that Humphrey and Roquan are overpaid, and also accept that there’s nothing the team can do about it.

With Lamar’s contract, there is something that can be done, and it’s something that will give Lamar a multi hundred million dollar check as soon as he signs.

It’s well reported(not rumored) that Lamar does these things “at his own pace” which is unprofessional and detrimental to the team.
Not really unprofessional. He representing himself so its gonna take longer. I mean its gonna get done for sure but we taking 100s of millions here.. gotta make sure them numbers right.. matter fact, edc and steve better make sure them numbers right

I'm not really worried about any of the losses; we can replace them all.
I'm a little envious of Dean and the Steelers because of the price and the player's quality, but that's all.
Trust the process
