bowser has athletic ability.
not so much coverage ability at this point.

onwuasor is a lesser version of bowser.

mosley got some coverage skills but nothing spectacular.

no depth whatsoever behind these 3.

that is not even considering all the differences in assignments , responsibilities , techniques and so on that pretty much the whole defense needs to learn....

we will be far from fine tbh.

False, Bowser has skills in coverage. It's the one thing he has going for him right now. Now, I don't know why don't use him at all along with Tim Williams(I never said Dean Pees was perfect... And Harbaugh makes a lot of questionable choices), but going back to his college tape Bowser was very developed in coverage. Hell, he's even flashed it in the pros. He'll be a stud if he develops more pass rushing moves..

Seriously, why don't we play those two more? Every time those two are on the field they make plays or apply pressure.

bengals have been running the 4-3 since 2000.

they did not change their scheme when they drafted atkins in round 4 nor did they decided to change their scheme because he made the pro bowl.

you decide on your scheme before the season begins and then go into FA and the draft to find players that suit that scheme.
you sure as hell wont change your scheme afterwards cause 1 guy made the pro bowl.
tbh if a player made the pro bowl already , why would you even consider a scheme change in the first place.
makes little sense.....


PS : ngata could play either scheme.

no we wont.

no team changes schemes to suit the skill set of a guy they drafted in round 4.
they sure as hell wont change it after he makes the pro bowl.

if we drafted Atkins he would have played the DE position in the 3-4 or maybe the DT position.

would probably have been very little drop off in his production cause he is that good....

Well we can't really help it if he isn't given a shot. He was a project to begin with so I can get it that we want to ease him but him and Williams are just getting ignored. I don't hate ZDS or Judon but some rotation would be nice.

the jags game where he got beat by mercedes lewis a few times i think is what made them hold bowser back.

he played a few snaps against the bengals and then had a lot of snaps against the browns but after he struggled early against lewis and gave up a TD, they pretty much limited him.

dont agree with that at all as he is more versatile then any other OLB.

my guess is that he probably struggles with run defense and could be exposed on draw plays or when they decide to run at him.
just guessing on that though.

I hate that we get so excited for players with massive potential, hype some defensive rebuild for a whole offseason, hear quotes that Williams has DPOY potential and then we completely ignore him and force him out while any other team would let him go and get 6 sacks if not more. Instead we get nitpicky and stay content with a pedestrian pass rush.

also im heavily in favor of cleaning house with all the coaches except Jerry.

with this loss we should just start playing the rooks to find out quick who are the keepers and who we should move on from.

I agree. Williams would be tearing it up if they used him in obvious passing downs. Work him that way and in time he will learn how to stop the run, but don’t keep him inactive because he’s not good at stopping the run, They knew this when they drafted him. I hate these red shirt years.

And it's not like ZDS is a good run defender either. Judon is OK, makes some plays and gets beat on some, Suggs is Suggs, but what would it cost to let the rookies get their chances? It's maddening because you know they make plays but no, we'd rather keep the mediocre contain prevent defense that made Mariota look like Dan Marino.

That's because our scheme demands our DL to basically stay home and take on blockers. If you want someone to blame for that it certainly isn't Ozzie.

The expectation so far as Williams was that he would be used in much the same fashion as they used him in college. Namely, as a pass rush specialist.

The clear problem and the obvious difference is that this offense can't effectively build a lead consistently enough to make an opposition have to throw.

I'd still like to see Williams out there. Even without a lead there is at least some opportunity to cut him loose.
