WR/RB Thread

Actually, I thought the line played well overall sans the first drive. Denver no longer has the elite secondary, but they still have a very good front 7(I would know, they're basically my second team since I live here and so many of my friends are Broncos fans). We ran the ball today a hell of a lot better and they have a great rushing defense. The offensive line needs two moves to fix it. Put Hurst back at G, Brown at RT. Running game will take off again, and then suddenly we are the most well rounded team in the conference.
I truly hate seeing Alex Lewis struggle at LG when we have hurst and brown who gives us a 2-for-1 in house upgrade. My biggest concern with the OL is that at its very best, it’s average, and there is absolutely nobody lower on the depth chart inspiring any confidence except for brown. If someone goes down it will be ugly

That's how every team in the league is dude. We just need an oline that's good enough

we do at least have nico siragusa sitting on the practice squad hopefully getting healthier and better adjusted every week
id say that's our deep deep depth that we can hope for

if you look at the O Lines around the league i think you'll see similar the whole way around - partly its a dearth of quality (or just decent) OL but also its the incredible quality across the board of the DL and EDGE guys in the league

All true, but I feel like, and I could be wrong here, that we are not a good offense when the OL isn’t playing well, and can’t comoensate for it the way some other teams can. This could be an area we’ve improved in this year, but I wanna see us be able to consistently move the ball the way we did today before I stop worrying about the OL

we've most definitely improved in that aspect but you're right that historically flacco has had larger variance in his level of performance between having time and not having time in the pocket than many other qbs...

that's a big thing of course but it will be eased by having a better receiving corps who can get open quicker

so yes it would help if we had a dominant OL but as long as they arent always in his lap its not going to hijack the entire offence like it did earlier in the year in the 2017 season - my hope is that this OL unit meshes as they gain chemistry like last year's unit (also that Brown gets into the lineup - im surprised we've seen no sign of 6 OL on the field even vs Von Miller but that's just me)

so an interesting thing about the running game so far this year and a general trend that's really been going on the last 2-3 years:

establishing the ground game first is no longer a valid way to run an explosive offence
the good OCs and playcallers in this league arent worried about establishing the run in september - teams are averaging 7 ypa on first down which opens up the run as a secondary facet of the offence

all the teams that have focused on establishing the run first (e.g. teams that have the highest percentage of runs called on first downs) are the worst offences in football by football outsiders metrics (and for what its worth it passes the eye test too)

yes the run is important when it gets colder but if you can fly down the field and score touchdowns then you dont need to work extra hard to establish a ground game (especially if its ineffective) because you dont need an effective ground game to set up play action etc.

and this is why im not fussed about the ravens offence not having a consistent running game yet for a couple of reasons:

  1. the passing game is effective which creates more opportunities to score and create space for the running game when teams start dropping defenders out of the box
  2. alex collins has faced the largest number of stacked (8 men+) boxes of any RB in the league so far which helps the passing game even more - if teams start dropping defenders into coverage then it will open up the running game more

Spoken like a football savant!

Didn't know that about Collins. Surprized since Joe has been chucking it more deep this year.

Pay john brown now

if we're allowed to then why not?

it'll have to be a lot more than 3/15 which he rejected from a team this offseason to bet on himself

i think he'll be looking (and will end up getting) somewhere between 7 and 11 per year if his form continues

If we could get him for 3/21, that that would be a steal.

Oh damn we cut Tim White for Cyrus Jones. White and Grant both cut in a matter of weeks. Sheesh.

haha like I said yesterday. But so far Cyrus Jones hasn't been a secure PR.
I expected us to pick up Jones on the practice squad. And I was even calling for someone other than White. But didn’t think we’d pick Jones up straight to the 53
