WR/RB Thread

Omar Brown? I remember he had a lot of hype when he was here.
Yes, Omar Brown. The one that if the Ravens cut, they were so dumb and would regret it. Then, when he was cut, Ozzie should be fired because he wouldn't make it to the PS. Then he made it to the PS and he'd get poached off. Then, he survived a full season there.

Anyone interested in Matt Jones if the skins cut him. He had his fumbling issues but if he solves those issues he could be a very good rb

I think with West and Dixon (if he can actually stay healthy), the Ravens will always be simply looking for a role player like Woodhead and I'm not sure Jones brings the type of skill set the Ravens would want.

So, Carlos Henderson had a surgically repaired thumb ligament and is a day-to-day, with some hope he might return in preseason. How much more were Tim White's thumb ligaments damaged if he's out for the season?

Stashed, I tell ya.

I think he's actually out for the season since the news came after the 1st game and not the 4th. He was also competing for a spot as a receiver and returner, and in the event of an injury (praying there isn't), he may have been able to contribute this year.

Yes, Harbaugh is intentionally injuring these players to stash him. Probably broke Tim White's thumb himself. He is the most intense coach in league history after all.
:P

For those of you that were interested in him -

Ryan Mathews has been medically cleared by the Eagles. I'm expecting a correlating release to follow soon. Though we shall see... maybe they explore the trade market first before just giving him away.

And interesting bc i hadnt considered it (though i dont see RB as a real pressing need), NFL.com suggested some trades in a piece recently, and one was us trading a late round pick to the Jets for Matt Forte. Jeremy Hill was another RB in a trade scenario, but in their situation it was the Giants trading for him.

But there are some interesting trade candidates around the league at the position - Carlos Hyde - another frequently cited. But, w/ the limited remaining cap space and definite starting and depth issues at OL... possibly backup QB too... just cant see us splashing at RB.

He's been cut now. https://twitter.com/NFL/status/897485268533510144

I feel like Hyde offers so much more upside than Mathews, id be for a trade, but realize its very unlikely

I don't think Tim White's injury was bad. He certainly got saved on the roster by being moved to IR. I guess the coaches didn't like him enough to play this season. No chance a thumb injury would keep him out 5 months.
Definitely stashed on IR. He wouldn't last on waivers 5 seconds.

I get thinking this, but as some Ravens reported have pointed out.... this really just doesnt make much sense.

Why would they do it now, with 3 more Preseason games and 3.5 weeks of training camp left? If it really was just an IR stash, why wouldnt you let him play in a few more preseason games and get some more practices in? Or if it were a day to day, week to week type injury, why wouldnt you wait to put him on IR until youre 100% sure he couldnt come back to practice some more or play in a final preseason game before then IR'ing him with some other phantom injury.

The fact of the matter is, whether or not it will actually take him until next offseason to recover or not... at this point hes not a player you can really use your return designation on. It only makes sense that he was definitely going to be out for the remainder of preseason and into the season, otherwise there is literally zero reason to IR him now, and several very good reasons NOT to do so, even if the plan was to use IR to stash him.

The timing of it only really makes sense as it being legit.

I honestly dont like either. Mathews bc of injury and fumble issues, and Hyde bc i dont think we need a #1 type back.

I think West is good enough to be the lead back, as your early down, between the tackles type runner. Then Woodhead gives us a 3rd down/receiving specialist.

What i think we need, if anything, is the change of pace/all around type back thats in between what we have in West and Woodhead. Decent runner that can play early downs, go between the tackles or bounce outside, while also being a good receiver.... but probably a guy you wouldnt really want toting the load, but can be effective in limited touches.

For that reason i think Forte really fits. Excellent all around skill set, but because hes aging probably isnt a guy you want getting 20+ touches. But to spell West for a series here or there, or for the 4 minute offense where you can still afford the run the ball, so you want someone that keeps the entire playbook open.... Forte could be a great weapon.

I agree with pretty much everything you said but thought I'd mention that you no longer need to designate i/r returns until you actually activate them when they become available - and depending on other injuries he could well have ended up being a useful one - not sure he is though - I'm pretty sure canady is going to be a boomerang candidate but you can have 2 now so I'm not sure who the other would be at this point

I'm not sure forte is what I'd want because his skillset at this point in his career isn't really anything new and I'm not sure he's better than west or woodhead at this point - in which case I'd rather add a burner/smaller runner to the mix than a forte-type

I was actually thinking of Forte earlier in the year, seemed like a signing we would make. West just doesnt do it for me, hes a guy that i think will get what is given to him, maybe a nice play here or there...just nothing that excites me about him. Honestly, i wish we would of drafted D.Henry....

my point wasnt that they have to designate it now, which they wouldnt.... was just that being an UDFA who impressed for 2 weeks, im doubtful theyd use it regardless on him. Dont think itd make much sense to use it for a guy thats at best like the 5th/6th WR and who didnt really look great at returner in his limited game action.

Especially with the glut of injuries we've had, and there will be more to come.... Canady is all but sure to be one, and im guessing there will be a better candidate to use one on them White. Not to mention the fact that it probably wouldnt make sense to bring White back from a games accrued, roster space perspective where long term player control, PS eligibility, and salary can all be effected to bring a guy back that isnt likely to bring anything to the table 10 weeks into the season after just 2 weeks of legit practice with your team.

Yeah absolutely - was just pointing out that there wasn't a clear alternative as a second candidate but I guess it could also be an in-season injury too

Yea its always possible they get close to the deadline for using the return and no other candidate has popped up and hes the only guy on IR thats healthy enough to return and they decide to use it on him.

My thinking though is thats probably the only way they would use it on him, being an UDFA that, while he was standing out, wasnt standing out to the point that he was a lock to even make the roster let alone be a contributor in any real way.

Regardless, to the original posts, none of that gives the team any incentive to "stash" him now as opposed to waiting to let him get the most reps possible before roster cut downs and the season starts. So, imo, the whole idea of this finger injury just being an excuse to stash away a kid we like doesnt seem plausible.

I know thats not what you were arguing for.... just going back to the original point.
