Just watching Lamar’s panthers highlights and one extremely important thing stands out in a huge way...

It’s a limited sample size, but this man has absolutely legit NFL QB footwork and form. His drop looks crisp and mechanical, wide set, long but still quick strides, clean stop with eyes already scanning with a purpose, rhythm, maintains wide set as he navigates the pocket(poised with eyes downfield of course), and he’s using the back to front foot momentum to push the ball out with a clean sturdy release and velocity.

I really hope we get to see more of him because that little bit of footwork was really encouraging, considering his footwork in the pocket was the worst of his traits and was the thing that we all said was fixable and could very well fix the accuracy issue.

Evidence of Urban as an underrated hire.

Agreed, but I’ll atually give Marty credit there too, rumor has it that Marty was on Vick’s ass constantly about being a qb first and using your speed to extend plays rather than just running and getting yourself hurt.

Does Lamar look slower to anyone else when he's running?
Hes running different. In college his runs were so often designed and the lanes were right there for him to hit full speed, his designed runs at this level take patience and sometimes he’s gotta scan before he can take off. His runs also seem to have been getting generally more effective as the season progresses, which tells me he’s getting a much better feel for sniffing out his lane and hitting it with the right timing. He also doesn’t have the same wide open spaces he had in college and has had to do a lot more slashing through tight spaces.

When lamar gets enough green to show his speed, he still blazes.

Imo i dont think lamar was ever a run 1st qb. Well in highschool he most def was but in college not really. He has a big arm yet when be throws, it seems like
It has no velocity. Its gonna take a lot of work but i really hope he turns out nice. That td pass
From him got me a lil hype cause you can tell he been work on his game.

Lamar has always had velocity though, even with poor form he whips the hell out of it, his problem comes when he’s gotta drop one in the bucket 10+ yards downfield, or when he has to put the ball in a catchable place tight to the sideline, he lacks accuracy on those throws that really require careful placement/touch, if he can zip it in there he can make the throw, and he can make a lot of touch passes across the middle, but that added depth to intermediate-deep sideline routes seems to get him and he sails them out of bounds.

And I never really referred to lamar as a run first qb, I was just talking about how Marty stayed on Vick about passing first

i think that's partly the increased speed of the defences vs college
and partly its because the way he runs he just eats ground up without ever looking like he's sprinting
but as he starts getting better and better at reading when to keep the ball he's gonna have more space to fly into

The difference between a lamar Jackson and a rg3 or kaepernick, is that those guys are just fast, lamar is a deadly skilled, aware, and refined runner, his value doesn’t come from letting a play break down and sprinting off, his value comes from weaving through the pocket, weaving trough traffic, slipping away by an inch, and just being a crafty runner in general and being able to slip through a cluttered front, even the most athletic QBs don’t have the same refined running skill that lamar has, his ability to find one lane after another and slash through traffic is on par with a top tier rb.

And another thing I’ve noticed, is that he is incredible at falling forward and squeezing the most yardage out of it, seems like every single run he manages to sidestep the tackle just enough to give him wiggle room to weasel his way forward and stretch out for another 2-3 yards. Look at all the sneaky little shit he pulls at the point of contact, sometimes he gets hit by 2 defenders and manages to split underneath them and slip forward and turn an average run into a near first down.

I’d still like him to slide though...

how many times has he actually pulled this year - i dont remember seeing him pull once (im sure he has but i dont remember him pulling at all)

Yanda has pulled 17 times this season and I've scored him for only 6 of 17 possible points on those plays.

All other elements of his game are outstanding and he's graded very well overall (7 A- or better and 1 B for game grades this season).

What we're seeing in terms of reduced pulls is a function of having Brown on the right side now. That creates an incentive to have the power run game move from left to right. Ronnie Stanley is agile for a left tackle. He can pull when the Ravens run a counter and he's much better at getting into L2 and making some sort of a block, even on the back side of run play, which was a chore for lumbering tackles like McKinnie. Within this environment, Yanda has again not pulled in the last 2 games.

I would too, he doesn’t need to slide every time as he’s got that knack for avoiding big crushing hits, and sliding really takes away potential for some things, but yeah long run it’s not worth the risk.

If he scrambles on third down and he’s past the line, slide before the hit, if he’s a yard shy of a first, go for it
