The Random Thought Thread

I think the Stars are just for a person the scout believes in, not just as a person but as a player too, means two scouts thought correa and kaufusi were something special and put all their eggs in one basket, as it were.

At least this is what im recalling from memory when reading about our draft process a while back

FWIW Correa has been pretty good this year.

i think it was a player that was sound in every element of their scouting report - a player that the scout would vouch for

if you remember both correa and kaufusi had the "stars" on them on the board - i.e. a scout has picked them as a notable guy with great character (which bumps them up the board a little) - every scout gets 1 star each and correa and kaufusi both got stars

so id imagine it was the board and the star on the player maybe gave them precedence where they wouldnt have otherwise

that'd be my guess
So dumb. Thats why i am ready to move on from Harbs because i feel like there has been too many chefs in the kitchen and one is trying to cook a pizza with pineapple (harbs).

Who made the call on Correa? That doesn’t strike me as either a decosta or Ozzie pick

So scouts actually pounded the table like their jobs depended on it... for Correa and kaufusi...
So I here’s how I remember it and my hypothesis on whose call it was to get Kaufusi and Correa. The scouts are the ones who assign their “stars” to prospects. I believe the coaches and upper personnel select the players. So some scouts assigned those stickers and Ozzie picked them probably with coach input. I’m assuming that it was the coordinator who says they want a player on their side of the ball. You would obviously want the coordinator’s input since they’ll be using them. So I am guessing it was Dean Pees who helped get us to select Correa and Kaufusi. That’s my best guess.

I still think after winning the super bowl / post ray Lewis era, it gave harbs more power / influence in building this team. A bunch of yes man players to go along with the coordinators. Less alphas. Why else did our draft success fall after the super bowl?

all sorts of reasons:

  • The league changed schematically and the rules around the league changed which changes what players you go after
  • The college system changed which affects the skills you need to be prioritising in prospects
  • Other teams started using analytics and more expansive scout systems - the ravens previously had been one of only a few teams who really went deep in the draft (with small schools etc.) but those gains become less marginal as other teams drafting improved
  • The period of sustained success had leached draft value from the team - we were always stocking up with lower picks than we had pre-2008
  • Harbs's influence definitely will have impacted especially with the way the team would have to change with the losses of key leaders and the new Flacco contract
  • The lack of replacement of senior scouts who'd been with the organisation for a long time
  • This is more of a guess but I'd assume Ozzie was a little slower to pick up the analytics and digital aspects of the draft than Eric - i imagine it took time to fully integrate the new methodologies in a way that bred success
there are other reasons i imagine as well
some of them will just be because scouts just missed and oftentimes you only have 7-8 picks in a draft of 256 players... that's not a lot of chances

1.) Lack of aggressiveness and too patient in waiting for players to fall to us
2.) Overvaluing our board and thinking drop off wasn’t significant
3.) Improperly identifying areas of weakness on the team
4.) Double dipping at positions high in the same draft and not tackling the position in subsequent years because you already invested early capital into the positions.
5.) other teams just got better at drafting
6.) Bad scouting
7.) Not using all resources available because as stated we didn’t adopt these prospect rating services used by many other teams but relied solely on our own scouting, which began to diminish in quality as we were poached routinely for years
8.) Freak accidents and unpredictable situations like Walker dying, Kindle breaking his skull falling down stairs, Perriman having a knee of glass, guys not developing like Elam and Brooks and Brown and Correa and Kaufusi and Davis and Maxx Williams and Thompson and Gradkowski and so many more guys. Too many bad risks taken like us waiting a while for a guy to develop and stuff. Also just a lot of bad luck.

There’s probably more I’m even forgetting.
