The Random Thought Thread

While the Ravens have often been overlooked by national media, I can sense they are ready to do some bandwagon jumping - if they haven't already done so. The reason is as simple: Jackson's game is electrifying. If we beat the Chiefs, the wagon will start crumbling under the weight.

It would seem that, while those in the media caution against overreacting after week 1, they seem to have no problem overreacting after week 2. On Golic and Wingo yesterday, their installment of "Book It" started off with the question "The Ravens will win the AFCN". Wingo said "I can't book that fast enough". Only 3 of 4 booked it.

The main reason they gave was "The Steelers are done" and "The Browns, despite having a great roster, haven't gelled".

Personally, I have a hard time pronouncing the Steelers dead, because they just seem to always be resilient. After seeing what Minshew did, I think it is unfair to Rudolph to assume that he is going to be an abject failure. We just don't know what we're going to get.

As for the Browns not gelling ... it is week 3. They undeniably have a very talented roster. To assume they'll spend the rest of the year out of sync seems silly. I still view them as a dangerous team.

Does our outlook appear better today than it did this preseason? Absolutely. But booking a division win right now seems a bit premature.

Personally I wish everybody would just stay off the bandwagon. Just way to early in the season to get a true picture and we gotta remember we've only beat the Dolphins (possible worse team in the league) and the Cardinals who just had the 1st pick in the draft and still are honing themselves as a run and shoot team. Pittsburg has played 2 tough teams in Seattle and NE who we still gotta play likewise where they still got a chance to beat up on the Phins and Cards. Locking up the division and playoff talk gotta at least wait until the midseason

Nothing but the truth here..

I never recognized/acknowledged Ed Reed's post-Ravens career so I'll do the same with Suggs.

I liked the quote from Greg Roman this week about Jackson facing Mahomes:

We might be seeing the next Brady–Manning matchupIt may be a tad early to put Lamar on the same plane as Mahomes, but it's fun to imagine we may be looking at having one of the league's elite quarterbacks to root for for the next 10 years or more.

I like to look at odd connections and 'what ifs' that crop up in NFL drafts.

Recall in the 2017 draft KC traded up to Buffalo's #10 pick in order to take Mahomes. It cost them their first rounder (27) a third rounder, and their first rounder in 2018.

That 2018 first round pick ended up being #22 overall. Buffalo sent it the Ravens so they could move up to #16 (LB Tremaine Edmunds).

The Ravens then flipped #22 to the Titans (along with a sixth round pick, falling back to #25 (Hurst) and also getting #125.

So what happened with pick #125? The Ravens packaged it with their second round selection, and their 2019 second round pick to move back up and draft Lamar Jackson.

So the future 2018 first round pick KC gave up so they could draft Mahomes in 2017 ended up in the Ravens hands, who parlayed it into the Lamar Jackson pick.

Drafting Mahomes cost the Chiefs two first rounders (27 & 22) and a third (91)

Drafting Jackson cost the Ravens two second rounders (52 & 53). They also moved down seven spots in the fourth round (125 to 132) where they drafted Jaleel Scott.

If Jackson and Mahomes really end up being relative equals in the NFL, you have to applaud Eric Decosta for the relative price paid.
