The Random Thought Thread

Harbaugh was guilty when it comes to coordinator selection and refusal to act earlier when it was clear it's not working.

Hes too loyal, I respect that but there have been times when his loyalty to substandard coaches and players has cost us. Bill Belichick is the standard we should be following, hes ruthless but efficient and theres no arguing against his results.

One of the luxuries BB has enjoyed is having the same OC on the staff in some capacity for the past 19 years, save the year and change McDaniels was away. JM is paid handsomely and maybe a coach like Roman can be appeased in the same manner and be in Baltimore for many years.

As far as coaching goes I would say “ loyalty” is not a fault, but the standard a guy like BB follows in order to breed consistency and excellence. Just have to be fortunate enough to be loyal to and be able keep the right people on the staff.

I am not trying to jinx us at all by saying this, because I believe it. We are one injury away from being in trouble, and that is at Tackle. The backup, worries me to death. If a quality Tackle falls to us in the first round of the draft (which they rarely do when you pick late) if I was EDC, I wouldn’t think twice about grabbing him.

Also really glad I didn’t go off on Kevin Byrne on the old forums the way I have since PurpleFlock started - definitely would have been banned by those mods for what I think about that dinosaur
It is funny, I didn’t like Sarah, I thought she was a closet Steelers fan. I liked reading Kevin’s stuff. I thought he had some incredible personal behind the scenes stories that he would share. I just hate going on BR website because mostly everything is video now. I am old school and prefer to read article, not watch videos.

i have no problem with kevin's behind the scenes type stuff because he has unparalleled access to the team - my problem is how he views certain issues and their relation to the team - he's a dinosaur

and ive never noticed that with sarah but fair enough - i just always enjoyed how she wrote the LFW column and how she was on camera

I often makes me wonder what would have happened if we would have kept BB as our coach when the Browns came to Baltimore. One of the first moves we made was firing him and hiring the worst coach in football -Ted Marchibroda. I thought he was horrible when he was the Colts coach. I can’t tell you how much I hated that move! I wonder how many Lombardi’s we would have had if we kept BB? I have a feeling though he may have bumped heads with Ozzie.

I did enjoy LFW under Sarah and she was better than Mink that is for damn sure. LFW is unreadable now.

I couldn’t for the life of me understand the hiring of Marchibroda. I never forgave him for that loss to the Raiders in the playoffs. I was at that game. We tried to cling to a 3 point lead and got the ball at midfield 3 possessions and went 3and out each time if I remember correctly going with basically the same run play 9 straight times. Raiders finally drove the ball to get s game tying FG as time ran out and eventually losing in double OT. The most conservative boring coach I’ve ever seen.

I remember that game and He was the most conservative head coach in the history of the game. I was so upset I had to suffer through him a second time around!

Heck probally nobody else was available and they were all nostalgic trying to draw fans when just us getting a team would've been sufficient. It was those Raiders of the old days which caused me to be a Raider fan the whole time we didn't have football. Dave Casper was the man!!

I admit when I was a kid, I thought those silver Raider helmets were super cool. I was a Ken Stabler fan. I guess, as a kid, I probably thought having the nickname “Snake” was pretty cool too.

I’m with you. I liked the black and silver even when we had the Colts. They were the only real thorn in the side of the Steelers who I hated long before the Ravens. Not sure I’d view them the same today because they were pretty darn dirty but they won by intimidation more than any team I’ve ever seen. My man was Ted Hendricks whose trade away from the Colts was just another sign that our FO was totally incompetent. So glad the organization we have now is so well run.

If we make the playoffs do we have a legitimate chance of playing in the super bowl? I feel like we all kept saying you just wait till lamars third year and Eric DeCostas second year managing. But like are we there now? Idk I'm just hyped. Haven't been this hype in like 7 years

JM has been on staff for about that time, but he hasn't been OC for that amount of time. Charlie Weis was the OC for many years as well. That being said, consistency has definitely been a huge advantage that BB and TB have had over their Patriot career.

how many teams have a 1st round LT available in case of injury. This is a luxury that no team has at their disposal. We need more than a left tackle. Would this be great to have. No doubt, but we need other positions more than we need left tackle...or right.

BB was the one that hired Ozzie, back in Cleveland, so I'm not sure they would have bumped heads. Now would Ozzie have left to become a GM of another team so he had more control? We don't know that, but that is quite possible.

We will never know how many Lombardi's he would have if he was the Ravens coach. That being said, he would have and had been bumping heads with Art Modell and that is the reason he fired him. Who does everyone think built those early year Super Bowls with the Patriots? Not trying to take anything away from BB, but if you look at those early Patriot rosters, you will see many of the core players on those teams were drafted by Bill Parcells and not Bill Belichick. We didn't have those players and it may have taken him longer to get those types of players. Would he have been in position to draft Tom Brady? Again, we don't ever know this, but it's an interesting conversation to have.

If we can get healthy and stay healthy, think we have a team capable this season, I really do.

Yes they were the glorified bad guys with Dr Death George Atkinsson and Jack Tatum laying the smackdown and putting fear into the hearts of wr's. Then guys like The Stork (Hendricks), the man from the university of mars Otis Sistrunk, Tooz, Villapiano to the days of Marcus Allen, Howie and Lester Hayes this team was just criminal (pun intended). I loved these guys.

right, like I said “in some capacity” and he’s been the OC for most of tommie’s career. Weis left in 2004, 15 years ago.
