Dean pees was pressure philosophy too, the difference between pees and wink is that pees would blitz frequently to make the qb anticipate openings that aren’t there when pees would start dropping defenders, wink on the other hand just wants to stomp the absolute piss out of the OL and QB for 4 quarters and let the secondary handle themselves. Both schemes were built on the exotic blitz packages as their core.

the closest we had to a non pressure oriented scheme was Greg mattison 09-10 where we went to a super basic zone defense out of the 3-4, and ironically Ed reed in a limited injured season had one of his 3 best years in that scheme, most others seemed to regress big time, most notably haloti ngata who was made to 2 gap much more often

maybe im misremembering pees but i thought i remembered him repeatedly dropping 7 and trying to keep everything in front

and wink does what you're suggesting pees did all the time - the ravens dont actually send the house all the time but it just feels that way because we simulate tons of extra pressure and drop guys from unorthodox positions - it's why i think bowser was one of they key pieces to this pass defence because he can line up and drop into coverage from any alignment and also rush from there too...

but you may be right about pees and i could be just misremembering - in which case it's even less likely we move to a more traditional defence

interesting looking at staley and wink - in 2020 they helmed the lowest and highest blitzing defences in the league respectively

unfortunately i cant find the blitz rate numbers for before 2018

Oweh had absolutely freakish speed testing so he is commonly referred to as a speed rusher, but I disagree entirely. Oweh’s most natural tool in his pass rush kit is his bull rush, when he puts it all together and has a proper jump, engages with good timing, and maintains leverage, he looks unstoppable with his raw power rush, his speed/agility on the other hand well I have yet to see him effectively use it in a pass rush setting, he uses it incredibly well as a LB though. Very intriguing prospect for the ravens, he looks like a legitimate LB and has tools to wreck gameplans in the pass game but he just can’t do it on his own.

say wink martindale is owehs DC in college, he very well could’ve been a top 20 pick

right but i reference his speed in terms of his ability to get home quickly in this defence
rather than speed rusher - maybe i should have said athletic rusher (or something like that)

i dont mean that he rushes like a true speed rusher but that his ability to close and explode with that freakish athleticism is important to potentially getting home in our pressure scheme that forces the ball out quick

im excited about all of oweh's tools - the combination of freakish athleticism mixed with length and raw power is so exciting - the idea that he could put all of it together if he's more precise and accurate with his hands...

you can already see how he just moves and looks different to everyone else when going through the drills

Oh I know wink drops guys plenty, not nearly at the rate pees did, so you are right about that, but pees scheme was definitely built on the exotic blitz. Pees’ biggest issue was protecting leads because he didn’t wanna blitz anymore, like at all, so he would drop 7, and he would do dumb shit like call a makeshift cover2/Tampa 2 or a single high, but your MLB and safety are at the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped. By late game qbs didn’t give a shit when they saw safeties and nickels and LBs showing blitz because they knew they weren’t coming, and they were often right.

prime example, the Tyler Boyd TD week 17 New Year’s Eve. A dean pees staple, defending a lead late game, scared to bring pressure, have a slow ass Eric weddle covering deep after lining up as an edge rusher.

He looked animated doing the pad drills in rookie camp, his speed around the pads and his arms as he swatted each pad just looked ridiculous, it looked unnatural lol. Like I’m very high on daelin hayes and I think he’s a year 2 starter and he’s judons successor(I regularly comped him to Judon pre draft), but the difference between the 2 was VERY noticeable.

i hope he develops technically as a pass rusher because going through the drills he just looked different

and i think you and i were on the same page on daelin - he always just looked like a raven

Freaks of nature always look different. Even Suggs wasn’t what you would call a freak in terms of athleticism when he was here. Being great in something is different than being an absolute freak at it

i only reference it because (obviously it's way too early to say with oweh yet lol) often with great players you can see the way they practice just looks different

Suggs was a freak though, he always had a great first step and incredible bend and agility and with near elite size. He didn’t test well though.

anyone who tears their Achilles in april and comes back midseason and plays the remainder of the year including 4 postseason games, is a genetic freak, then went on to have a stupidly long and productive career. that mf suggs was a freak by many measures it just didn’t reflect in his testing, which was why he fell to us

Oweh definitely possesses the want-to in becoming great. He’s not raw for lack of work ethic or a low motor, that’s for sure

for me it's gonna be a couple of things that were holding him back in college that i'm hoping get somewhat improved/corrected before week 1:

  • hand usage through the rush - he was instinctive but inaccurate with his hand-placement and timing and it meant he wasn't super efficient staying clean especially at the top of the rush - we may not see him get super-refined this year as it will take some time to learn this at game-speed - even madubuike who was pretty natural with his hands in college still has some work to do with his hands (although he was getting pretty good early in the rush by the end of the year)
  • getting out of his stance more effectively and explosively - we know he's a freak but he seems to waste some of that explosion coming out of his stance which means that he's not converting that explosion into upfield momentum super-effectively
  • reading pass - he was held back by penn state partly by the scheme asking him to almost always read run - he'll similarly be asked to do that a lot with the ravens so he'll have to get quicker reading that (even pre-snap) to help his get-off and again help him get upfield
1 of those is a mechanical technical issue that should be fairly easy to solve, 1 is a schematic/watching film "issue" and the other is more of a practice reps and game reps issue

i think the hand usage will make the most difference but might be the one that clicks last

Quick question for those who do podcasts or shows. How do you know what's taken, copyrighted, etc so you don't get in trouble for when you think you've come up with a great name for a podcast but find out it's taken? Quick back story, I moved to NC over 10 years ago to pursue a sports broadcasting career. It hasn't worked out that way but when I was in school, my school had made it's own radio station.

I started a football show called "The Front Seven" and after years after I graduated I turned into "The Front Seven Podcast" on my YouTube channel in 2015. I want to get away from that and have my own branding basically... just looking up football terms to think of a cool name for it to launch this season but don't want any legal issues. Thanks.

Edit: This is my channel link for those interested but as you can see I haven't posted in quite some time due to my 40 hour a week job and most of the time I'm way too tired to record after work.

in naming terms id imagine you can get away with quite a lot - there's hundred of podcasts with football terms (or combinations of football words) in their titles...

Matt Elam and Sergio kindle were worse and it’s not even close. Perriman was a bust but it’s 6 years later and he’s still in the league doing fairly well for himself.

the hate the fan base had for perriman was flat out weird, and I kinda hate our fan base for it. Mfs actually implied that he was taking the money and quitting and faking injuries. Like what was it about perriman that sent our fans into an ugly ass frenzy
