The Random Thought Thread

I can really see us with 2-3 new starters on the oline next season. Probably 3+ new starters on defense too

We really need to try for a completely revamped OL. Maybe keep Zeitler, see where Stanley is in terms of recovery simply because of his contract. But LG, C, RT should be up for grabs and rebuilt via the draft. DL through FA however possible, and also the draft. S should be addressed if the right one comes along and/or falls to us at some point in the draft.

We'd never tank. The teams left on our schedule though do have a very fair shot at beating us, so it may not matter.

im not suggesting we tank lol - just pointing out that we've made the most of it when we've been given access to higher level talents than we usually get... CJ Mosley, Ronnie Stanley, Marlon Humphrey

When your qb is mobile, is not the inner line more important than the tackles?

Interior line is extremely important. For many QBs, interior pass rush is much worse than the exterior. Can't step up into the pocket, being forced to throw on the run, etc. I think Lamar has a lot of issues with interior pass rush, just as most/all QBs so I agree

I would rather keep Bozeman and not need to target LG or C with our limited picks. I don't really want any ammunition used on the interior to be honest. Zeitler, Bozeman and whoever wins from Cleveland or Phillips should be enough. Even throw in Mekari and Colon to that competition. Powers also exists.

I say it because it is something that I noticed with Orlando Brown in KC, with Lamar he was limited to moving the rushers outside (gap A?) so the space that remains between tackle and guard was used as an escape by Lamar, in KC does the same, but Mahomes takes many more steps back, which is why the brown movement is not so useful.
Villanueva not only lives in the apartment, but is always close to the guard, Lamar has no escape, in addition to closing that gap, he generally tries to go the Zeitler Mekari side with little result.
That is why I said that the inner line seems even more important.
I don't know if I'm right

sure... interior pressure is difficult to deal with but the space is smaller in there that it's easier to mitigate that risk - you've often got double-teams available inside and it's easier to find ok interior play than it is at tackle

so it may be that interior protection is important but i still think that individually tackles are more important - it's impossible to scramble away from pressure if you're locked into the pocket by poor tackle play - you need at least one guy who reliably holds up his end of the bargain on the outside both to preserve the pocket and also allow for escape both laterally and vertically in the scramble drill

10 picks is hardly "limited" picks. And if you want Lamar to regain form, he'll need time in the pocket. Get us a line, that should be top priority.

Brady would argue otherwise. Not mobile, but you get pressure in someone's face and their first thought will not be on passing the ball or reading the defense.

I think getting everybody back healthy next year will surpass any kind of first round pick we could make. I think that IS our first draft pick, all 20 or so players to come back ready to go.

right but all im saying is it's much easier to prevent interior pressure with less investment

interior pressure > edge pressure
tackles > IOL

those 2 statements can coexist pretty comfortably with each other

Limited as in finite. It's widely acknowledged that we need to rebuild the majority of our defense, and we all know that even with 10 picks we'd be doing amazingly well to get 4-5 starters. So 2-3 upgrades on the OL isn't realistic or even a smart use of resources.

Yea i agree and if we lose 5 straight, finishing 8-9, maybe it wouldn’t be the worst case scenario. snag someone like Kenyon Green or Jordan Davis or Tyler Linderbaum. I could live with this selections

Any idea why we get lined up so late and snap the ball with barely a second left on the clock? It’s getting ridiculous now

4-5 starters would put a draft close to the 2018 ravens or 2017 saints kind of realm - the kinds of draft classes that instantly turn franchises around lol

you're normally aiming for 3 starters in a draft to call it a surefire success

ravens have done well since 2016 mostly getting good classes:
16: 3 starters (if you include slot corner which I do)
17: 3 starters
18: 6 starters (including 3 pro bowlers) + 3 more starters for other teams
19: 2 starters
20: 3 starters

and 2021 looks like we're looking at 3 starters already with Bateman, Oweh and Stephens

but that being said that doesn't preclude us from throwing resources at OL - would be surprised if we dont double dip there to increase our chances of hitting on 1
