The Random Thought Thread

Lamar is getting hella respect in the comments lol

I do get jealous watching the Eagles offense, they are what I thought we should have evolved into after 2019. We still rely on the ground game but developed a solid passing attack to compliment the run game... but Greg Roman is still here. I just don't know how the Eagles offense would do against the 49ers defense if they played each other in the divisional or championship game. They are a great offense, but I feel much like us against the Titans, the Eagles offense would stall out against the 49ers defense. They are going to pay Hurts top money, that's for sure but much like with Tua and the Dolphins, is it the receivers or the QB?

It takes 2 to tango. Most of them probably do not want to come to a run centric team. Ravens are where WR careers go to end after all.
I agree if you're talking about the JuJu's or current younger crop of guys. But you think TY Hilton or Cole Beasley wouldn't have signed here if we called up 2 weeks ago?

Must be a lot of Steelers fans in WV.

The Eagles are moronic if they pay Hurts. They REALLY should not because the entire strength of their team is the weapons they have which they cant have without Hurts. If they sign him suddenly the weapons go away and they are left blaming the coach for his regression.
Hurts' running ability adds a lot to their team, and he does make some nice throws. They built that offense around him and it changes a lot with a different type of QB.

So two thoughts. The first one is some people on here constantly say stuff like you can't switch up an offensive philosophy in season. It doesn't and can't happen. That's literally never made any sense to me, but I've never had some evidence to the counter.

The Bengals fans are discussing their team this year and there's an associated article from the athletic which I can read because I don't pay for it. So I'm going off the comments here. Take that for what it's worth. What I've gathered is that Zac Taylor had a vision for their offense and it sucked and Burrow struggled to do well in it this year. So midway Taylor completely reinvented the offense to be basically identical to Burrows LSU offense given they had the talent to successfully execute it. (I know this is where people are gonna be like yeah see, but the Ravens don't have the talent to change).

So ultimately if true, teams can make huge changes in scheme and philosophy in season and it can be for the better.

Why do the weapons go away? All depends on who you decide to pay. Devonta Smith will be cheap for like 3 more years, so he ain't going anywhere. Would easily be able to keep Goedert and Brown for at least two more seasons.

After that, just a question of what your defense looks like. Jason Kelce will be retired soon, Fletcher Cox won't be around much longer, and they've also got high-end draft picks next year.

Like they won't be able to afford to stack their defense with add-ons, but they could easily keep their core foundation together.

Also could make a case that if you extend Hurts this offseason, you may get him at a discount (unless maybe he wins MVP and they win the SB).

They cannot afford to sign him for the 45m he is going to want no matter what they do. They have 5m in cap space next year and they really only can make another 5m in space with cuts and once you factor in signing draft picks they simply do not have the space to sign him. They probably have to let him walk. Even with the most pushed back deal imaginable you cannot really get under the cap on 45m per year (even 2024 does not look good as that is when a lot of the invisible dead money starts kicking in).

Sure you can. They can create tons of cap space, and they can backload his deal so that his cap hit next year would be small. It'll be an extension, so his base salary would stay the same and the cap increase would be the signing bonus proration.

In terms of roster moves...
1. Slay ain't playing next year on a $26M cap hit. He'll get an extension of some sort.
2. They'll restructure Lane Johnson's $14M salary into a much lower number. Especially when he has three years left on his deal.
3. Eagles are notorious users of void years, so they'll gladly push dead money into future years when the cap is significantly bigger.

I'll bet you gigantic sums of money that the Eagles will have no issue whatsoever extending Hurts this offseason if they want to. Key is if they want to. If they want to continue to stack their roster to make another run, they may not decide to.
Also not entirely sold he'll be a $45M player either. Depends on how the rest of the year shakes out.

The thing about those void years is a lot of their players are going to be leaving over the next 2 years which means all that void money is going to come through at once which makes their cap situation even worse than it looks.

Slay has no incentive to take less so either you pay him another huge deal or he just plays out the last year of his deal and walks knowing you cannot cut him.

Even with that though you make money with Slay and Johnson, the void years from players who are leaving hit and now you are in a bad situation still where you do not really have the money to sign your QB and more to the point he has 100% of the leverage to force an overpay even in the best case where they get some of those void year players to sign a 1 year deal just to exist. Now if the Eagles are dumb enough to do it after making the same mistake with Wentz, they will deserve the mediocrity they will be in for the next few years.

@Sizzle are you really going to say that wasn't a solid draft?

A now top 10 ILB
A RB who has a career 5.7 ypc.
A DL who has been stout and has multiple times completely taken over games
A gadget WR and all pro returner
Depth ILB
Low quality starter at G (on another team)
Another low quality starter at G (on another team)
A high level starting NT
A WR4 as a 6th round pick
A starting caliber S as a 7th round pick.

Like how do you actually get better? Especially how late we picked.

1. Who said Slay would take less? An extension lowers his cap hit. Doesn't mean he takes a paycut.
2. A lot of those players leaving will be leaving in 2-3 years, because Hurts won't be that expensive until then anyway. Void years will stack up, but so will the salary cap, as its going to rise by like 10-15% a year most likely. It's not the way I would do things, but they're going to be a SB contender for the next several years, and like the Rams, they'll gladly trade a year or two in cap hell several years down the road for a SB ring. Much in the same way they did just like 5-6 years ago.
Hurts is a much, much, much better QB than prime Wentz was, hence the likely desire to do so.

All that AND to note that they have four draft picks in the first three rounds this year, of which one is pretty much guaranteed to be top 10.
