The Random Thought Thread

What is it going to take for us to find a young pass rusher that is really good? The last two seasons our best pass rushers have been Clowney and Van Noy, both of whom are in the 4th quarter of their career. Oweh hasn’t been anything special. It’s clear that having an elite pass rusher is a big deal in the current day NFL, but EDC doesn’t seem to know that.

you don't find those guys where we pick
those guys are normally long gone in the top 15 (maybe 20 if you're lucky) for the exact reason we're desperate to have one

Ojabo showed in small moments that he had promise. What a shame.

I wonder who the Ravens would have taken had Ojabo been off the board.

That's what I was thinking on the top of my head. Unrelated, how do you feel about Jones? I know ordinarily he'd redshirt the whole year given the circumstances. You think there's any shot he sees the field?
I'll be curious to see what they do with him, assuming the media can sneak out a little insight. If he's sticking at T, I don't see a path. If they give him G reps, I think they'd probably see how quickly he can get up to speed, because the potential there is a lot more tantalizing than whatever the fuck we have going on currently.

Apparently the new CBA allowed for teams to take out insurance on their players that allows the team to regain cap the following year in situations like this.

Why would a team not take out insurance on mega contracts? I'd have to imagine the Ravens did. I don't know Steve to be one of the cash poor owners, so you'd think he'd have opted for this considering they do not count against the cap.
So I think they do on the "mega" deals, but I don't think they'd do it for Madubuike's. I think you see it more for the like Lamar-type deals. $75M gtd really isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

For me, the "insurance", like most insurance contracts, is a bad deal for the purchaser. That's why I think most Owners don't do it. The likelihood of career-ending injuries for star players is actually really low once you get past the guaranteed $, and most players don't get more than 2-3 years guaranteed anyway.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind sliding Jones at RT & having Rosengarten go to RG. I know that wouldn't happen but TBH with how bad our guard play has been, I'd be open to almost anything. Roger has had a rough start to the year, too.

This season has been so disappointing man. What a fucking blunder. This was supposed to be a top 2 roster in the league plus depth. The OL should be getting better with continuity instead they look drastically worse than last year, the secondary looks like it did the first half of last year, the pass rush is not even close to the mid pass rush we had last year, the run game just isn’t working at all, the play calling has been shit, and as of week 4 Lamar is now looking like his younger self in the pass game.

I really can’t understand how in year 2 of this coaching staff and what feels like year 3 of this “era”, we are the worst we’ve been, continuity alone should have us improving and the additions of starks and green should be much more apparent.

I just can’t believe that Josh jones, Michael Pierce, ardarius Washington, and pat ricard are such gigantic losses.

i dont see how he could ever be ready given he's missed his entire pro career so far... hasn't had a single practice
i also wasn't particularly high on jones either tbh (and that was without knowing about his injury)

most teams are doing it on the mega deals because it pays out and gives a cap credit if they miss time not just if their career's over

but that's the QB deals and in some cases the reset the top of the market highest paid defensive player in football kind of deals e.g. the garretts and the ja'marr chases etc.

don't forget the crucial losses of Pat Mekari, Malik Harrison, Chris Board and Brandon Stephens...

makes no sense that losing 4 starters across the 2 sides of the ball (and nominally upgrading at least 1 of them if not 2) has somehow got this team to fall apart

but the vibes are horrific and maybe michael pierce, ar'darius washington and pat ricard really are that important in terms of what they bring energy-wise

Pat and Pierce are the kind of guys that you don't realize how important they are until they're gone.
