The Random Thought Thread

Yeah, was just coming here to post. Could be that someone at a very high level of Gov got involved, and FIFA officials have been known to be not the most upstanding individuals.

Not to get political but everyone agreed he should have not been suspended and FIFA was corrupt. Since it seems Trump talked to FIFA, and played a role in the suspension being lifted, everyone is crying! Or the whiny left is crying foul.

I only think its stupid because its the first time this has been done in over 900 world cup games and over 60 years. This was not the worst world cup red card in over 60 years.

Technically true. But prior to the start of the tournament FIFA did similar in allowing CR7 to play, deferring his 3 match ban. So there was recent precedent there.

And above all, the red card was BS to begin with, so the proper decision has been made.

Yes but there have been a LOT of bs red cards over the past 60 years (like a LOT). If none of those were corrected then it doesnt feel like the right decision was made. It feels more like watching them throw a flag for RTP on Mahomes for brushing against him when we watch them powerbomb Lamar with no call. While technically the former might be RTP be the letter they are not giving those calls to anyone else and it feels bs.

I don't see any similarities in that analogy. And the rule cited for the reversal has only existed in its present form since 2023, so this is the first WC where it could be used as it has been in Ronaldo's and Flo's cases.

I'm not saying it doesn't look incongruous on the surface, but there is somewhat of a precedent there of the use of the rules. That said, I wish they would have just left it alone, it's clouding the focus on the efforts of the team as a whole.

Your example highlights that analogy. If you are Messi (who should have gotten a red) or Ronaldo (who got special treatment) or a country that FIFA wants happy then you have one set of rules but if you are not in that camp you have another aka you can body slam Lamar but if you brush Mahomes its 15 yards.

FIFA has, was, and is the most corrupt sporting organization on the planet. This has been known forever and is not changing anytime soon. They will do whatever puts the most money in their pockets. If that means not calling down a VAR review on a missed Messi red then they will do that. If that means delaying a red card suspension so that Ronaldo can play and make them more money they will do that. If that means, for the first time since 1968 or over 900 World Cup games, to remove a red card suspension then they will do that as well.

This is getting the Mahomes treatment. This is being on the side that the league wants to see succeed. The rest of the world is used to this though because they know FIFA is corrupt.

Trump and FIFA are a match made in heaven (or the other place). Of course something like this was going to happen.

Yeah I don't think people realize how bad FIFA is. The 2022 WC in Qatar (!) that lined all FIFA executive pockets is a far greater scandal than any of this and no one cares anymore.

You keep saying it hasn’t happened since whenever, but before 2023 the rule as it is now written, the one they are using, didn’t exist. No doubt they put it there to give them a way to do just what they have done. And all those other things you mentioned have been happening in the EPL since VAR came into existence, it almost always favors the home team.

Again, I wish they didn’t suspend the suspension, but I’m not surprised it happened. And yes, as I originally said FIFA isn’t the most upstanding organization, that’s nothing new or surprising.

FIFA did us a favor, they arguably did Portugal more of a favor(2 games). Why did no one get upset about that?

Yeah FIFA has a long history of corruption and there aren't any asterisks next to the games they put their thumb on. I don't agree this will lessen a US victory. If there is a "tragedy" to this, it's that this ruins the team's standing as the surprise darling of the tournament. the world was actually rooting for the US and now they go right back to being villains.
