The 2021 Offseason Thread

Damn I thought powers was the leader so far, hard to gauge really since phillips is playing a lot of OT

is he?
from what ive seen and heard, mekari's playing LT, Phillips is playing LG with the 1s and Cleveland LG with the 2s, Powers is playing RG with the 2s...

would suggest that powers isn't in the conversation right now at LG if he's behind a guy he lost the RG starting job last year to (despite being a rookie with no offseason) and also behind a rookie who's a week into his first training camp

idk - makes me think he's not in this competition

seems to me like Phillips is the leader in the clubhouse and Cleveland's the guy who has a chance to take it off him

a bit like how it was Fluker's RG job to lose last year (and he lost it) and Phillips beat everyone else despite being a rookie

That must have been the last 2 days, the first week of camp it seemed in reports like powers was getting a lot of reps with the 1s

I mean he was our 2nd pick at 31, and we didn’t have a pick in the second round… when you look at Oweh as our second rounder, he looks damn good
Except our “2nd rounder” was nearly a whole round earlier from our actual 2nd rounder, and to get that we traded away a borderline cornerstone player. I feel like if we didn’t take Oweh he would’ve been a late 40s kinda pick.

that said, get your guy, just because other teams see a mid 2 doesn’t mean they’re right. And I’m thinking those other teams may have been wrong, I just didn’t feel that way at the time.

Now JOK, I’m down with for sure. Think he’s gonna be a great one.

I wouldnt have bat an eye if we drafted JOK over Oweh with our 2nd 1st rounder. In fact.. it made me hated last year's pick of Queen even more when I factor in hindsight. The fact that he fell into the Browns lap in the middle of the 2nd just made me feel even worst lol. Its that Myles Jack vibe all over again. But at least we hearing good things coming out of training camp with Oweh, unlike that bum Kamalei Correa.

The other star coming out of camp is Proche. He sure is getting built up by the media and team. Maybe its just me being a hater, but all of his "highlights" are against #31 Dorsey. Until I see him making those grabs against Marlo or Tavon, its meh.

While this is a great write up, the only thing I cared about was the first sentence, which is that Mekari appears to be the "swing tackle" (or I guess the default L or R tackle with Stanley out) and that Phillips doesn't appear to be in that mix. If that's the case... yikes.

I kind of care more about our depth at Tackle than I do care about who our starting LG is. If there's an open competition between Phillips, Cleveland and even Powers, whoever wins that job I'll be fine with, because I know they'll have won it. Like if Stanley doesn't make it back by week 1, and we're trotting Mekari and Villaneuva out there as book ends, yikes, yikes, yikes. They'll make the OBJ/Fluker combos look like All-Pros.

Depth at Tackle looks like the #1 glaring hole on this team that I see right now, and that's not a great thing when your All-Pro LT is on the PUP list. It's early, but a month from now, if nothing's changed, it's time to hit the panic button. It'll very much have that feel of "we upgraded on the interior, just to downgrade on the outside". Whether that means a better Oline or not is a giant ? at the moment to me.

No news is usually good news. It means it's not a significant long-term injury.
Heard from youtubers at camp that he’s able to step on the field and stretch and move around and what not, also a good sign.

only thing I don’t like is that it’s a hamstring for a speed player with like 0% body fat. This thing could linger or re-aggravate at any point

The guy is 5’8” (5’9” on a good day) and 180 pounds, COMPLETELY soaking wet… it’s a wonder he’s been this durable so far. I love him but damn if he had a few more inches to his height and about 20 pounds bigger, he would be a top 5 guy

Guys who seem to CONSTANTLY get massive praise in camp:
1. Madubuike, by far the most praise
2. Calais Campbell
3. Rashod Bateman(when he’s practicing)
4. James proche
5. Odafe Oweh
6. Daelin hayes
7. Tavon young(since returning)
8. Bradley Bozeman
9. Jk dobbins
10. Josh Oliver

In no particular order, but madubuike, Campbell, hayes, oweh, and proche seem to be the biggest standouts based on what I hear from all the YouTubers who go to camp almost daily and from 105.7, but these guys are singled out basically every time I listen to reports

I enjoy reading these threads and listening to a few YouTubers to keep up on the news but curious if there’s any good channels I’m missing? Any recommendations?

for what it's worth it sounds like it was a different lineup today:

but also i really dont mind mekari at tackle in a pinch - i wouldnt want him as the named starter for teams to gameplan but i think coming in mid-game his footwork and technique are still pretty natural at tackle - just lacks the length etc. to hold up there if teams know he's the starter

but sounds like it was phillips at LT today and Cleveland at LG

Awfully quiet on the Hollywood front. I feel this is a bad sign .

harbs yesterday said it was worse than they initially thought - it's a hamstring which is notoriously tricky to work out timelines for - my guess is it's something that might make him a gametime decision if we were playing football but in training camp there's no reason to risk it with him - he doesnt need the time and reps the way others do (especially with lamar not involved yet)

proche is doing exactly what you hope a 2nd year player on the bubble will do especially with vets etc. out

proche right now is basically the stalwart WR option with the 1s (although at this point with all the absences on offence it's hard to call them the 1s)

making the absolute most of the extra reps - he's unlikely to ever consistently win vertically but he's a tough cover and reliable - and right now he's building the coaches's trust

For what it’s worth, but even more playmaking from Proche
