The 2021 Offseason Thread

Hollywood’s hamstring is worse than previously thought according to Harbaugh. Boykin out with hamstring too, but are they thinking of possibly stashing him on IR with a phantom injury? That would be an absolute genius way of keeping both him and Proche

Oh and Bateman out with muscle soreness/tightness again.
 
What the fucks going on with our receivers and their fucking muscles. You fucks better not tank our most promising fucking roster ever after we played every fucking card to finally get a wr corps

Way too early to assess with Boykin. He just got injured this morning, so don't even know the extent.

With the shorter IR periods, it's much harder to do the "stash a guy for a year with a 4 week injury" thing. Once he gets medically cleared, and he's only missed 3 weeks, they'll have to make a decision on whether to bring him back or not. I'd have to check the details of the IR rules from last year, but I'm pretty sure if a player is healthy and he's done the minimum time on IR, you basically have to start the process of activating, or release him.

So assuming Boykin's injury was even serious enough, which means he's out for longer than a month from today, there's a good chance you'd have to activate him or cut him once the season starts.

Didn't realise that brandon stephens was already almost exclusively playing safety - thought for sure we'd be seeing him work at corner this training camp but apparently it's the complete opposite

Yeah I was really surprised there. Such a massive learning curve at safety. Something tells me that Wink has a big hand in this, given that Wink uses safeties like no other DC in the league

i mean it was EDC who said it at the presser but then they clarified later that they'd be trying him at corner first

but it looks like they're doing whatever they can not to have him practice at CB - like we've got nigel warrior practicing at outside corner but stephens at safety

suggests to me he's either not what they were expecting (in a bad way) or that they fully expect him to develop into a safety
also worth noting that ive seen him a fair amount of special teams already

I’m just gonna come out and say it… I think it’s the former. I think they thought they were so goddamn smart that they drafted this guy on day 2 when he would’ve otherwise went undrafted. Same with Ben mason because he looked essentially useless from what I could see.

Even edc can't nail every single pick. Stephens was the only pick I didn't understand, Mason is also useless but I mean at least we didn't waste a high pick on him.

With Mason, I thought it was probably a year early to be spending draft capital on a FB, BUT, I think it's also possible that this is the final year Ricard is a Raven. I could be entirely wrong on that, but he's an UFA next year, there's a lot of other players who are probably higher on the priority list, and he could be cast off in the way of Juice, who left for greener pastures (and potentially more money). It's so hard to put a price tag on a FB when a lot of teams don't even have the desire to employ one, but for context, he's got like a $4M cap hit this year, and I'm not sure the Ravens are really interested in paying much more (or even maybe that amount) for him at this point.

Mason felt like insurance, in case a) Ricard gets injured and b) they probably think they can pass him through to the PS for the year without a lot of risk, in hopes of a 2022 roster spot.

Can’t nail all of them but damn if a few picks don’t look like absolute head scratchers, this one feels like it could be an ugly smudge on a potentially GREAT class.

For example, if we took hayes instead of Stephens, I’m ecstatic on draft day and even more so with the reports of how good he’s looked. James Hudson, janarius Robinson, Brevin Jordan, Caden sterns, tre brown, Amon ra st brown, Jordan smith, Tyler shelvin, elerson smith, some really good looking prospects we passed on for Stephens and it looks strange right now, and frankly I don’t see many avenues where a completely unknown commodity like Stephens lives up to a third round billing.

Makes sense, however Ricard is a FB and imho they can easily be signed as udfa. There's no need to draft one.

i mean let's not be ridiculous - just because we didnt know about him doesnt mean he was going udfa - just not a ton of film on him and not highly publicised as a prospect but he wasn't ever making it out of the 4th round

i genuinely feel way more nervous about cleveland than i do about stephens... but i get that that's not the opinion of most here

I guess. I might not have gone 5th rounder in this case, but I really put almost no skill/talent differences between like a 6th-7th rounder and an UDFA. I'm pretty sure UDFA's have a better track record in the league than 7th rounders do, and they're probably comparable to 6th rounders.

Or, put another way, if they thought Mason could be as good as Ricard, I'd have no issue with them using a 5th rounder on Patrick Ricard, knowing what we know now.

The Mason pick, in combination with the Cardinals trade, led me to believe that the FO ran out of prospects that they coveted pretty early this year. Just seemed like a "F*ck it, might as well keep the Michigan drafting streak alive to help Jim out with recruiting" vibe. They also didn't seem to put much value on the 2020 College Season. If I remember correctly, they basically said it was a lost season and that they wanted to push into the 2022 draft as much as they could.

I'd assume that they have plans in place for if Ricard walks other than Mason, who probably brings more value as a ST contributor than a genuine offensive piece. From what I've seen of Mason he doesn't seem like he's an obvious fit in Roman's scheme - as a TE or FB.

I mean that's fine, but the "from what I've seen" is a combination of like a week of padded practices and OTAs where you don't hit anybody. I would be waiting almost a full year for that assessment. For all I know, not only was he Ricard insurance, but he also may have been Boyle insurance, who doesn't seem particularly likely to be making a camp presence this year and may very well not be ready for week 1.

And its also possible they thought up all of this and then realized he's just not that good. Certainly happens pretty much every year also.
