The 2022 Offseason Thread

DeMarcus, anyone?

I am not crazy about him, but if he is affordable maybe
I would absolutely go crazy if we got him. I was a huge fan of him in the 2014 draft and the fact that he's an edge player alone has sold me. If theres any FA addition I want its absolutely on the edge position.

Jeff Z. had a couple of interesting statements this morning (though unsurprising). He no longer feels like it's a given that Lamar signs an extension before training camp, and no one knows if Ronnie is playing next year.

I'm fine with Lamar betting on himself at full health with an upgraded line, but Ronnie is an issue. I don't trust James and Mekari, so now you're looking at possibly two new Tackles. I really wish OBJ didn't throw a bitch fit so we'd have some insurance.

He also expects Tavon to be cut to save ~6 million, and it's a given that Averett is gone.

Brown would have been a FA this year anyway though

orlando would have been gone in 2022 no matter what...

i think that means only OLB coach still a vacancy
i remember zrebiec saying in the last week or so that he wouldnt be surprised if we brought in some more assistants/quality control guys too this year

Can someone link what he said about Ronnie? Anyone know any truth to what he said? Fuck. Sounds like we’re going tackle at 14 huh

what who said about ronnie?

you talking about EDC... he was talking about ronnie in 2021 not 2022

here's the full clip:

we may draft a tackle at 14 (if one we like is there) - but that's somewhat separate to ronnie's recovery - we're going to be looking for a talented tackle this offseason from somewhere no matter whether ronnie's ok or not

Apparently Zrebiec addressed it in one of his mailbag articles over the last couple of days

It's dope he has offensive coordinator experience so maybe he might add some wrinkles to The Ravens passing game. I don't think The Texans offense was bad in 2015 when he was calling the plays either but outside of that I hope The Ravens not done adding more coaches to their offensive staff.

Apparently Zrebiec addressed it in one of his mailbag articles over the last couple of days

this are the excerpts about ronnie in his mailbag columns:

"Tackle certainly is a need and that’s a position I think they’ll address in the draft. High-quality starting tackles are just really expensive on the free-agent market."

Q:
"Given the contract that Mekari signed recently, it seems like he’ll be a starter going forward. Where do you see him lining up? — Gary K.

It will depend on what else they do along the offensive line. If Ronnie Stanley and Ja’Wuan Jones are healthy and the Ravens take a tackle early in the draft, Mekari could settle in at center or guard, assuming Bozeman departs. If the Ravens find their long-term center in the draft or free agency, then Mekari probably slots in at tackle. He’s a good piece to have because they know he can competently play all five positions up front. And look, we all saw last year how important that sixth and seventh offensive lineman is to a team. If the Ravens are healthy up front, there’s nothing wrong with Mekari being the sixth offensive lineman, regardless of his contract. The $5 million per year he’s making would be steep for a non-Week 1 starter, but Mekari’s versatility and experience make him so valuable either way."

"Nobody knows right now whether he’ll be able to play next year. DeCosta said he’s optimistic, but he declined to say where Stanley is at with his rehab. I spoke to Stanley in mid-November after he had the surgery and he didn’t know either. He said he was pretty confident about playing again, but he planned to take things slowly. What’s clear is the first surgery didn’t totally fix the problem and Stanley realized in Week 1 that it was going to be tough to play with the condition of his ankle. He’s hoping that having another surgery will allow him to change that, but there’s no guarantee. As for the specifics, both the Ravens and Stanley have declined on multiple occasions to talk about the extent of the injury and the nature of the surgeries."

None of that to me seems particularly new information - or any more worrying than anything we already know

Watching some more michigan defence while i go through draft prospects and i think maybe the biggest differences in terms of pressure and blitzes is about the basic philosophy of what you're trying to achieve with a blitz

wink seems to be all about flooding certain gaps to create confusion and hopefully get free rushers (the problem is that leaves gaps open and voids in the defence if the OL picks it up and i think teams just got really good once the tape was out there of adjusting to those pressure looks)

macdonald obviously would love free rushers with simulated pressures - but more importantly he seems to want to stay gap sound with his pressures - ultimately he's more interested in putting guys in positions to play and win their matchups - if the OL busts the protection then great but he's not going to rely on scheming a wide open gap, he wants to create good matchups for his guys to go and try and win (which is more repeatable and less risky than blitzing 2 guys in a gap for example)

obviously macdonald's approach is far less risky - and with wink's pressures and blitzes becoming more predictable we lost some of the advantage of his disguises and schemed pressure because there wasnt much new stuff he had that he could throw at experienced QBs

macdonald needs guys who can win their 1v1 up front though - so we need to find some of those guys... hopefully oweh is one, and hopefully madubuike takes that leap too but it would be great if we could find another guy

Don’t know if it was official but I thought I read we were hiring the olb coach from Michigan?

Unless I’ve missed something, im pretty sure that was a defensive analyst/quality control type guy who’s background is in DL being hired in a similar role to the ravens

but also don’t think it’s been made official yet... came from a Michigan beat writer about a week ago and we’ve heard nothing else since
