The 2022 Offseason Thread

Chase Young could be on the block for a QB. I’d give up 14 for him in a heartbeat if someone Washington liked was there at QB if they hadn’t already taken one

I know texans fans wanted him gone for ages before he was fired before last season - players consistently did better after leaving the Texans and played worse coming from other teams - also a few high profile guys didn’t develop the way you’d have hoped (e.g. tytus Howard and Nick Martin, max scharping, Martinas rankin)

I know there’s a bit of a ferentz link here too

this feels like a bit of a nepotism-based coaching hire tbh

he’s only an assistant but I’m not particularly enthused by this hire

My only reaction to this hiring is: meh.

I have no idea who he is. Let’s hope Harbs hiring the right people for his staff.

Everyone saying this is a weak QB class. I hope zero QB goes before the 14th pick. That trade back should fetch us a lot.

would be nice if we could pull off that bear’s justin fields trade: “Chicago sent the No. 20 overall pick and a fifth-rounder this year (No. 164 overall) in addition to 2022 first- and fourth-round picks to secure its quarterback of the future.”

That is a very fun thought and all, but I think I’d rather see 2 or more qbs go ahead of us and hope a ridiculous prospect the likes of which we NEVER have the chance to draft falls to us, like a David ojabo, jermaine Johnson, Jordan Davis, Ahmad Gardner, or Charles cross.

even more, I hope we are the ones to trade up and I hope thibodeaux falls like the media says he might and we move up for him.

im a glass half full kind of guy. Just gotta think either scenario that plays out is going to be a win-win for us. Haha

I would think if you want a trade back to fetch a good price, you need a decent number of QBs to come off the board before us. If they're all there, its unlikely anybody behind us is going to move up that high for one, considering I'm sure a lot of teams are going to have a lot of those QBs ranked comparably. It's not like 1-2 guys have really distanced themselves from the pack at this point.

If you want the pick to have value, you'd probably want a run on QBs early, and get left with 1-2 first round guys left. That way, a team behind us needs to move up to get one or they'll miss out.

The other obvious issue is... who's behind us that's moving up? Most of the obvious teams that will be in the QB market (either in FA or in the draft), which include Houston, Carolina, Denver, Washington, and maybe some others, all pick ahead of us, and none of them have an additional first round pick in the back half to give us. So if those teams are moving back in, we're out of the first round entirely.

The only teams behind us would be New Orleans and Pittsburgh. I expect both will probably be more likely to be in the veteran QB market, and neither of them are so far behind us that they probably couldn't sit pat and just take whoever is there anyway. Philly and the Chargers are the only teams between us and the Saints/Steelers, and so I think they'd take their chances. If they were moving up for somebody, I'd think they'd have to go a lot higher than 14. I would think at least to like 10.

Not to mention I don't know what price tag Eric would require to trade back with the Steelers for them to draft a potential franchise QB we'd have to play twice a year for a decade +. I don't even know if he'd take that call.

Why would Washington do that though? If they want pick 14 to pick a QB, why don't they just take one at #11 then? If they were picking behind us that would make some sense, but not in front of us.

Them trading Chase to a team picking ahead of them so they could move up makes a little sense I guess, though I personally wouldn't do it.

Exactly. It doesn't make sense to me either. Chase Young is a talent that is worthy of being traded for a couple of first-round picks. I don't get why they would trade him away unless they get a highly accomplished and winning QB1. How our 14th pick factors into this I don't know.

It doesn't. They're not trading Chase Young for anybody available in this draft. There's not a prospect in this draft that's on his level, and certainly not at QB.

They're trading Chase Young for the likes of a Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson.

Just from a comedic perspective, and because I kind of like it when large Corporations under public scrutiny give a big "fuck you" to the general public for all their self-righteousness and egotistical "morality", I'd love to see Watson end up in Washington. I doubt it happens because I don't think he wants to go there, but I would love to see the public just get all sorts of butt hurt over that.

With the scandals that hover over that team, it would be blasphemous, tantamount to committing harakiri to trade Chase Young for a Watson. Russell Wilson or Rodgers seems like the only candidates for this to even be considered.

Are they hiring him as a favor to Cullley? It seems like it to me on its face. I really don't know how good this coach is, but I sense a favor.

Well I doubt the Packers are even on Rodgers radar, plus I highly doubt he (or Wilson) gets traded anyway.
My point was that it would be great for me to watch a team with so much negative PR just go after somebody with the same level of negative PR. It would bring me great joy to just watch the public go crazy over that, and not be able to do anything about it, all at the same time.

That being said... one of the other 31 NFL teams is almost certainly going to trade for Watson either this year or the next, and they'll do so willfully and be willing to accept all of the arbitrary public criticism associated with it. And I've seen nothing from the Redskins to suggest they're unwilling to do the same. I just think it would have more to do with him not wanting to go there than them not wanting him.

it's early in the offseason, but I see the Commanders brining in a veteran QB and depending on who that is, they may even draft a rookie QB. That being said if they draft a QB it will be at 11 and agree with you that they won't be trading up into the 1st to take a qb at the back end of the draft, unless it's all the way at the back end and someone is there that they feel is slipping.
