The 2022 Offseason Thread

For Weaver's promotion it might also be setting him up to be MacDonald's successor. Macdonald is a fairly young DC building a good reputation. A couple good seasons and he could be a HC somewhere else if he wants to be. Give Weaver a nice raise to keep him in house so he gets the spot if MacDonald leaves.

thats true - I hadn’t even considered that macdonald might not last long in the job - assumed with his age that he’d be here for a while but you’re exactly right that with an impressive season or two he could quickly become part of the HC cycle

Ehh, maybe. I think if that were the case, they just would have made Weaver the DC instead of bringing in an outsider all together.

I think it's just the franchises way of giving "tenure" to one of its longer tenured coaches, and sort of smoothing over any animosity that would have raised from him being passed over for the DC job to begin with.

In my opinion, in order for MacDonald to get HC offers (at least in the NFL), he would probably need at least 3 years of high quality defenses here before I think the league may take him seriously. It's not a great time for defensive-minded coaches to be getting HC jobs generally, and so it usually takes a high level of dominance to get that.

Now its possible he gets HC offers from college that he explores in the next few years (especially if Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan in the neat future), but I also don't know what MacDonald wants in that regard. If it's not a top tier job, he may view it as a step back.

with macdonald, part of the reason why it was so easy to get him back was because he loved being in baltimore and he always wanted to coach in the NFL not in college - the michigan DC job was obviously a stepping stone in his mind... maybe he'd see a college HC job as a possibility but the impression i got from his presser and some of the stuff zrebiec and others said at the time of his hiring was that he's an nfl guy

also not ridiculous for DCs to get HC jobs - it's less than the offensive guys but it's by no means a shut-out - we had 3 of 9 this year and 2 of 7 last year

Staley only had 1 year as a DC before getting the HC job, Saleh had 4 years, Eberflus had 4 years of good but unspectacular defence (but tbf was credited with helping create a culture at indianapolis)

dennis allen and lovie smith have loads more experience than those 3 (lovie also has been a HC before)

im not saying it's a foregone conclusion that macdonald gets a HC job quickly but it's certainly not out of the question either

Right but I guess my point is "quickly" is 3-4 years. In 3-4 years, I wouldn't guarantee that Weaver is even here. I would imagine its entirely possible that Weaver gets a DC gig in the next couple years, regardless of whether that's with the Ravens or somebody else.

I'm not suggesting DC's can't get HC gigs, but 5 out of 16 the last two years shows clearly how the NFL views them. That means in any given year there's 2, maybe 3 guys who will get a gig, and that's out of 32 teams. There's plenty of good defenses out there that MacDonald would be competing with.

Rationally, I think its obviously premature to really even suggest MacDonald is a HC candidate now or in the future. He currently has zero years experience of running an NFL defense, and only one year running it at the college level. I think its every bit as realistic to suggest he simply might not be any good as an NFL DC and gets fired before he gets a HC gig.

So I think we need to pump the brakes pretty hard on this line of discussion, and similarly, on the idea that Weaver is the heir apparent.

It's like I'm looking into the sun!!!

talking about it and it actually happening is way different. We are only discussing it and maybe heir apparent is a strong word, but if McDonald were to become a head coach next year, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Weaver get a chance as DC. I do agree though, it's most likely Weaver gets an opportunity as DC with another organization before becoming DC in Baltimore.

I'm loving the new format but can I switch to dark mode?

How do i change back to black
If you guys figure it out lmk. I couldn’t figure it out either earlier

you've got to wait a few days while the redesign/update happens
see this thread for details:

regarding the dark vs light, this specific part of that post should answer your questions:
"PurpleFlock will be using a temporary/basic theme for a few days after the upgrade while I finalize a proper and unique look for the site."

Didn't see this. Thank you

Oh, I gotcha. That's one of the reasons I don't read LFW anymore though.

when i was just starting out as a fan it was one of my go tos because i had no idea who and where to find "good" ravens content and LFW was the only thing that consistently showed me stuff (this is back before i had twitter and was engaging on the forums)

nowadays it's mostly just rehashing stuff ive already seen the day before
