Overtime rules have officially been changed so both teams get a possession. If the score is still tied after both received a possessed, then it becomes Sudden Death.

What i dnt like about this is that most teams wont even take the risk of going for 2 before regulation end now

Eh, you gotta think that if you’re a harbaugh or mcvay or Staley kinda coach that you still believe gaining 2 yards on one play gives you a better chance to win

I mean...
Ridley in his first five years is on track to miss 40% of his teams games, and James missed 45% of his teams games in his first four years.
For context, Ronnie Stanley has missed about 35% of games played.

They're all elite at their positions, but wholly unreliable when it comes to being on the field. Teams frequently need contingent plans for these guys when they're not on the field, because it occurs at a high rate.

I wouldn't trade Hurst straight up for either of those guys, but I'm not sure I'd trade JK Dobbins + Calais Campbell for either of those two. Especially in the current landscape.

Well they weren't doing that in the playoffs anyway.

It doesn't impact the regular season, because the regular season OT rules aren't changing.

I think if it comes down to a situation like with the Steelers last year where they can't stop the other team on defense and they're pulling people out of the stands to play CB, the 2 point option will still be enticing.

I think it will be interesting to see if teams defer in overtime. The good part is that they'd know what they need to do after the other team has it first. The bad part would be that if it's still a tie after 2 possessions, the other team gets the ball first in sudden death.

and look how magically 4 of the best teams at the end of the postseason were all in the bottom left part of that graph...
bills, chiefs, bengals and rams (only reason the first 2 didnt make it further in the playoffs is because they got knocked out by each other lol)

Well strategically speaking, it would rarely ever make sense to take the ball first when both teams get at least one possession.

I also don't think you'll see a team who scores a TD on the very first possession go for two very often, barring some sort of kicking/weather problem.

The only real interesting strategic part is if goes TD, PAT, followed by a TD. Does that second scorer go for two for the win, or prolong the game, knowing that its sudden death.
 
The Saints signed Andy Dalton. Dalton just following us everywhere he goes.... signs with Dallas the year we play them, Dak ends up hurt and we play Dalton. He signed with the Bears last year and due to Fields being hurt, Dalton started against us. Oh no... that means Jameis is going to hurt before we play the Saints and we'll play Dalton when we play the Saints this year aren't we?

he, shanahan and reid all have that kind of weird conservatism in common - they have these incredible offences but somehow dont back them to get a yard on 4th and 1...
