The Movie Thread

Alright deadpool 2. You win. You're my new movie of the year. It reminds me a lot of terminator 2. Just as good as the first one but they have a real budget now...

Exactly, it was meh
I mean it's a bit played out, but I just enjoyed the entire thing. As much as I love Ryan Reynolds he needs to tone it down a bit. There were parts of infinity war that dragged and the movie was tonally off.. Even if it was very good.

That said this year has been kind of terrible for movies.

Oh right.. Forgot about Mission Impossible 6 somehow.

Yeah no, I take it back. Easily the best movie of the year and nothing could convince me otherwise. Ever since the third one the series has been progressively getting better somehow. Too bad that Mission Impossible 2 is horrible.

Ryan Reynolds is awesome but even he couldn't make that a super enjoyable movie, it wasn't bad but its not a movie id care to ever watch again. Infinity war was better than DP2 id say but you are right it wasn't amazing or anything. The most overrated marvel movie, however, is black panther. Was good, but everyone claiming it was the greatest thing of all time was just wrong..

Didn't watch it but heard it was good. But you are right I was looking at movies released this year and it was a depressing list. Although I did realize I never watched the equalizer 2, definitely gotta see that one now

Yeah mission impossible 6 was awesome

I liked deadpool 2 more than infinity war but infinity war was my least favourite of the 3 mcu films this year...

Understatedly I really enjoyed antman and the wasp despite having almost no interest in the IP

There’s been some pretty damn good movies this year though:
MI6
Incredibles 2
A Star is Born
Blackkklansman
A Quiet Place
Eighth Grade
Paddington 2
Annihilation
Suspiria

There’s also been some fun romps:
Oceans 8
Tomb Raider
Black Panther + Ant-Man
Solo

Still loads of films I still want to see too:
First Man
Sorry to Bother You
Creed 2
Ralph Breaks the Internet

My top ten so far, 11 months into 2018 after watching 44-ish of this years movies
(Sidenote, this will contain 2017 films I didn't see until the year changed)

1. Mission Impossible-Fallout-10 (Nothing really to say here)
2. A Star Is Born-9.5 (I hadn't really been looking forward to this one, but the trailer caught my eye, and it blew me away, and the ending wrecked me)
3. Searching-9.5 (If you haven't seen this one yet, do it. It is so well set up that I deeply cared after 10 minutes and every part is used to perfection)
4. Avengers IW-9.5 (Yeah, I loved every second of this one, it even fixed Black Panther (The character, not the other movie) for me)
5. A Quiet Place-9 (This movie hit harder than I expected, and it was tense enough to silence a full theater, so yeah...good)
(2017) 6. The Greatest Showman-9 (Yeah I know but it's my list and I still can't contain myself while hearing the soundtrack so I got what I wanted)
7. Molly's Game-8 (Not everyone's a fan of Sorkins directing style, but his writing is as good as ever, and there was no doubt as to my enjoyment of it)
8. Incredibles 2-8 (Not as worth the long wait as some were hoping but it still carried the themes while maintaining to be as relatable as ever)
9. Ant-Man 2-8 (I actually like this one better then the first, and it just sneaks in on the list. I doubt it will stay through the last months but its here now)
10. Ready Player One-7 (This beat a few ties just because it felt like it was made for me, and I still have fun watching it now, but again I think this one will get swapped after mid-December)

So yeah, not as good a year as I thought before going back over the list, but I think this last month and a half will pull it out for me as I have some films that I'm really looking forward to.

And, for fun, my NOT top 10
1. 15:17 To Paris-1 (Eastwood, I love ya, but please more Gran Torino and less......this)
2. Black Panther (Unpopular, but jesus did I hate this movie, just all downhill after the opening scene)
3. Jurassic world Fallen Kingdom-2 (I actually enjoyed the first movie in this reboot, now I just want to burn it all to the ground)
4. Den Of Thieves-3 (*yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwn*)
5. Pacific Rim Uprising-3 (Why does this even exist? Why not leave the awesome first movie alone?)
6. White Boy Rick-4 (More due to sheer disappointment than anything else, this looked awesome and then...wasn't)
7. Oceans 8-4.5 (These female reboots don't work, stop doing them)
8. Breaking in-4.5 (Didn't see this movie? Don't worry, neither did anyone else)
9. Death Wish-4.5 (Sad that Bruce Willis has forgotten how to act, maybe he'll be better in Glass next year)
10. Rampage-4.5 (I forgot this movie even existed before doing this list, which might be it's best quality, it's not TOO bad that it sticks)

2018 has been bizarre for movies, not too much complete trash, at least that I've seen, so it's floor is OK, but it rarely hit the ceiling especially from some movies that I was excited for. I'll post a new list when I've seen the rest of the films I plan to this year.

I liked the Greatest Showman more than most no matter the historical inaccuracies. Since Hugh Jackman is done with Wolverine..... Just have him keep doing musicals. Or get him an Oscar somehow. He deserves one.

Your sentiments towards Deadpool are mine towards Black Panther. It's a decent movie but one I would never care to see again. It's not bad like Thor 2 was, but it's not worth watching again. The best part of that movie is Micheal B. Jordan and he was a good villain but it was literally not groundbreaking or anything. I'd still argue both Logan and Wonder Woman have crushed every super hero movie released the past 5 years or so. Not just cause of my infatuation with Jackman and Gadot.

Same on black panther.

And Wonder Woman was awesome mainly because gadot is sexyyyyyyyyyyy. And who doesn’t love Jackman?

Dont get your infinity war hate, but to each their own. The MI series really picked it up for the 4th one... o thi k it was ghost protocol. And for the second one....DOVES!!! That movie is cookie cutter John Woo.

Guardians to me is not that great. For all the Marvel hype they put out a lot of average movies which is what I'd rank Black Panther
And I'm a Coogler fan. Iron Man is still better as is Winter Soldier which I probably have as my favorite.

Wonder Woman would be one of my favorite movies if they casted a different actor for the villain. Good actor, just a bad fit.

It'd be like trying to cast Jon Bon Jovi to play a Harlem rapper. Just no.

@redrum52 It's the end of the universe potentially and you get them quipping every 20 seconds and there are times where the movie just drags. It isn't The Dark Knight, or for a non-superhero movie, the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, where every scene exists to serve a purpose. It's a good movie, but massively overrated. For every good concept such as (yes, spoilers, if you haven't seen it by now that's your fault) Gamora's death, the Thor storyline, the Wakanda battle, you have storylines that go absolutely go nowhere or tonally just confuse the movie (Vision and Scarlett Witch, Cap not getting enough screen time, the constant quipping in the one film there are a ton of stakes, Starlord's now infamous mishap). It's a popcorn flick and was entertaining, but the movie was at it's best when it was focusing more on Thanos and had the darker tone. And don't give me the bullshit of "it's a comic book movie, it should be fun". The two best super hero movies of all time, The Dark Knight, and Logan, had darker tones and explored greater themes among a simple popcorn flick.

Is it better than Age of Ultron or better than any Marvel movie since Winter Soldier/Guardians? Yes, because the MCU is a nice movie universe but is overrated. Fun popcorn flicks but nothing groundbreaking. Is it some cinematic masterpiece? No. I'd say there's only 2 "masterpiece" super hero movies and that the MCU has none of them. The Dark Knight was an Oscar draw, and Logan not getting more than one nomination is honestly a crime. Hell, if you look at the Oscars ten years ago, The Dark Knight is a much better movie than any of the ones nominated.

Infinity War got a solid 7.5/10 for me. I'd watch it again and thoroughly enjoy it but it's #5 on my list for MCU movies with Winter Soldier, the first Avengers, Iron Man I, Guardians I all soundly ahead of it.

And fuck Starlord

Been awhile since i've been on here, glad to see my thread is still kicking. Heres some tv/movies i've seen recently. Im sure i have forgotten some.

-Ready Player One
might be my favorite movie of the year. Dont remember the last time i had that much fun watching a movie. So many old school references and with Back to the Future being my favorite of all time, hit me right in the feels instantly.
-Annihilation was incredible, i love science movies. Need more like that.
-Blackkklansman was pretty damn good, nothing too incredible
-Equalizer 2 was pretty fun, but just like the first really.
-Sicario 2 was good, but the first one set expectations way too high. Cant wait for the third
-Den of Thieves i had higher hopes for, was hoping something as good as The Town.
-Game Night good quality comedy. Nothing special
-Death Wish was better than i thought it would be
-A Quiet Place was a huge let down for me, i dont see what everyone loved about it. Yay, cant wait for the second one.
-Molly's Game was awesome. Loved the true story aspect, rumor was that Toby McGuire was the one to ruin her
-Billionaire Boys Club i thought was entertaining. Kind of Boiler Room ish.
-Anon is an underrated movie with some really cool aspects and something new.
-Tag was an absolute blast to watch. I highly recommend it
-Extinction was a netflix original that puts an awesome twist on alien invasions
-Upgrade was a awesome action flick which i dont watch often because its so repetitive nowadays, but this was a very entertaining movie
-Haunting at Hill House- Netflix's best work in awhile
-House of Cards was just not the same without Spacey and ended on a big cop-out in my opinion
-Maniac ummmm wtf did i just watch
- A Man from Earth- for any history buffs out there that want some great dialouge watch it. Its about a professor who claims to be 14000 years old. I love it.
-Errementari - Holy hell, literally. This is a foreign film on Netflix, based on a ancient fable of a black smith making a deal with the devil. It is english dubbed so the words are off, noticeably. It is a little cheesy, but i think if you appreciate cinema, you will enjoy this movie. I recommend, but it is more for cinema lovers id say.

Waiting to watch:
-Peppermint
-Halloween
-Mile 22
-Terminal
-Alpha
-Serentity
-Mortal Engines
-Creed 2
-Glass
-Pet Cemetery
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- Manson murders with DiCaprio, Pitt, Scorsese
-The Irishman- DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino, Kietel, Scorsese
-Girl in the Spider's Web
-Homecoming
-True Detective season3

News:
-Rambo is in shooting right now
-Ridley Scott has Gladiator 2 as a go
-Godzilla vs Kong in 2020
-Breaking Bad movie on the way
- Swamp Thing series is a go

This should be enough for now.

Denis Villeneuve is a genius man, there was no way this film was ever going to be as good as the first - we're talking about the director who made Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Bladerunner 2049 - out of a nothing premise (by albeit a very good writer) that had similarities to many films that have come before he crafted a film that was so good that it created the market for a sequel out of a non-pre-existing IP which is almost unheard of in modern hollywood

so there probably will be a third sicario (its already in production) but id be hesitant to expect it to be great given that the sequel made less money and cost more than the original and also was not as good

-Tag was an absolute blast to watch. I highly recommend it

i watched it the other day and was also presently surprised - it rips off the guy ritchie sherlock holmes films at times (weird but it works) but it was actually pretty funny and interesting - more fun that its based off a true story as well

in terms of films that have just come out though

I'd whole-heartedly recommend Widows to literally anyone - it's the best film i've seen all year
