I finally watched Sicario, far better than I was expecting and got a big shock at the end. Denis Villaneuve is the best director in the world today.

Dunkirk had some good moments

Dunkirk had some good moments

This one is on my list

I think his last 4 films have all been masterpieces and his last 3 are incredible

Prisoners
Sicario
Arrival
Bladerunner 2049

Those last 3 films all buzz around as possibilities on my favourite films of all time

It’s testament to how great he is that the most legendary working director of photography roger deakins repeatedly wants to work with him which is why sicario and bladerunner are gorgeous films - arrival is also beautiful and it might be my favourite of all his films but there’s a part of me that wonders if it would have looked even better if shot by roger deakins

But I agree if I’m a studio I don’t worry about the money and just give him whatever he wants because even if his films don’t make all the money back they have a masterpiece to own for all time - I just want Hollywood to throw money at him til the end of time

Lol SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

What’s fun about him too is he takes on projects that he’s passionate about and doesn’t chase a big payday - he was reportedly offered James Bond 25 but is too busy and committed to his Dune reboot (that might flop financially) that he didn’t entertain their offer

I’d love to see a villeneuve Bond film though
And a Star Wars villeneuve stand alone - that could be incredible

It’s funny he could be a studios get out of jail free card for an ailing franchise - you give him authorial control and let him do whatever he wants and he’ll turn your franchise into high art

I've loved Villeneuve films for years without realizing it.

I walked out of 2049 and immediately looked up the director and his filmography, and was blown away when I realized he had directed Prisoners and Arrival, films I had loved but had then walked away from. Funny how that comes around isn't it?

i think he's the best current working hollywood director
you could make arguments for ava duvernay (if wrinkle in time is a hit) or wes anderson/quenton tarantino (both incredibly stylistic directors) or kathryn bigelow and a few others

but villeneuve's recent success is unprecedented: he has made 7 incredible films in 7 years - he's prolific, efficient and most importantly these films are good - what makes the success even more unprecedented is that they span multiple genres...

also funny that i mentioned bond and then this headline just popped up:

"Bond 25: Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve was offered Bond 25, hopes to be free for 26 or 27
His 'fantasy' project clashed with his 'dream' project"
