2018 Forum Mock: Discussion Thread

He played corner at Seattle out of necessity, after everybody got injured (Maxwell, Lane, etc). Was safety at college.
He is a cornerback and has said so himself. That’s where he wants to play.

Although he said he would consider playing at safety again even though CB is what he wants to do.

that's crazy that bashaud breeland only went for 4...

man well ive learnt my lesson on the daylight savings time so you guys better watch out - i promise i wont mess up this time lol
still got some cheap guys (unless people bid off for them but i doubt it lol)

corey graham
kenny vaccaro
jimmie ward

Okay I finally have internet again after this storm, hopefully I didn't miss too much.

Edit: I guess it was a few days, before storm, but they couldn't fix it because of storm either way hopefully I can make it work.

Sorry to hear about the storm. You haven't missed the draft, which is arguably the main attraction. That being said, you have missed a couple of free agency periods for specific groups.

With the bid-off deadline passing and no claims being made on my remaining players, I have to say that I'm fairly excited about the haul. I initially had Lamarcus Joyner circled as my top target, but I had a sneaking suspicion that he'd be the very same for a team with an enormous amount of cap space, so I diverted my attention elsewhere. I ended up landing Ricardo Allen, who's successfully transitioned from college CB to a rock solid cover safety despite his size. He's also averaged 1,084 snaps per his three seasons in Atlanta, so he offers blend of youth and experience. Joe Haden was able to turn things back around after battling through injuries in his previous two seasons, and Tyvon Branch was an outstanding do-it-all defender when healthy.

But the acquisition I'm mostly pleasantly surprised with landing is CB Trevor Williams. I came across his name when glaring at the FA list and was taken aback as I figured he was tagged as an ERFA. He wasn't bid on otherwise, meaning I could've legitimately landed him for .5 Stars, but I upped that number to be on the safe side. I definitely understand why he'd go unnoticed; he's far from household name and he's probably the fourth most recognized name in their deep CB group. But Williams had himself an excellent season. He played the exact same amount of snaps as Casey Hayward, that being 1003, and he more than held his own, allowing just 34 receptions all season. More impressively, he also had more PDs and INTs on deep targets than completions allowed, with just 4 of 20 being made, which is a dire need for an NFC South DB. It's possible that a comedown is in the cards, but at age 24, I cannot say that I expected to be the only bidder in the race. At this stage, I feel like the defense has filled out rather nicely.

I could have done with grabbing a couple of corners i can trust but im actually surprisingly happy with the safeties i got - i got 3 guys id legitimately want to get on the field all for 1 star or less:

Jimmie Ward has had a few injuries and troubles and a lot of positional changes since he was drafted but once he was finally moved back to free safety this year he looked like a good-looking safety - this is a fairly boom or bust type player but i got him for 0.5 stars so hell yeah (he was a guy i liked in that draft too)
Kenny Vaccaro is a little difficult to pin down and his usage was always a little strange in new orleans - maybe some sort of dime package might help him
corey graham's conversion to free safety has improved him a lot

i guess all of these picks are a little sentimental lol - ive always liked these 3 players - glad i get to add them to my depth chart

What do you guys think of Troy Hill? I was looking for depth guys last night, and I found a few articles on him that say he had a strong couple of games at the end of the season. I guess the question is if he can do it over a full season, but could he be a real bargain at 0.5 stars?

Vaccaro's struggles were evident in my reviews of the defense, but to his defense, he played basically everywhere this season. Slot, safety, even started a full game as an corner. I had no hesitation is letting him walk, but that's not necessarily because he's not of value. Graham's started most of the Super Bowl and has been solid in coverage for ages it seems. It helps that he offers positional versatility and played over 1,000 snaps the year prior in a full-time role. Ward is a solid get, especially given his age.

In short, yes. He quietly was rock solid in coverage in college, and he actually started all of their final four games this year. Granted that they were insanely up and down. He goes from giving up 4 yards on 4 targets, to 125 and 58 with a score in the following weeks, to a complete shut out against Atlanta on 5 targets. Obviously more than worth the .5 Stars given the age, upside and flashes in a starting role.

thanks - its fairly unspectacular but i feel fairly good about that haul given that none are expected to start
