The Offensive Line Thread

Absolutely, I've got on Eluemanour a lot but man, dude was flat out terrible.

to be fair to everyone involved - he wasnt supposed to play this year lol - ate least 6 guys were at various points supposed to be ahead of him - yanda, lewis, urschel, siragusa, skura and initially bergstrom was ahead of him too (and bowanko probably is now)

The 2.45 sec is the time he takes to throw on average, not the time provided him to throw. Flacco is 5th fastest to unload the ball, which could be a measure of pressure, anxiety, or a lack of mobility. Most of the scramblers have the longest times to throw. Derek Carr is the big exception, because he's unloaded fastest of any QB in the league.

interesting - ive always found that stat difficult to parse because of the way its presented in the graphic above it

I can recall us ripping Hurst to shreds his rookie year when he was playing LT. I don't expect Eluemanour to be Yanda but dude was wrecking the game-plan. I don't think we should spare Eluemaor of the criticism if we didn't do the same for Hurst.

i was never one who criticised hurst the way others did but that's a fair point - but much like hurst, eluemunor should not be playing in year 1 - that's not necessarily a criticism, he's just a project - ill criticise eluemunor but going in we all knew he would be a project

Hurst deserved his criticism imo, he was the weakest and slowest oline prospect in his class, he was also graded as the worst LT in the last 10 years. Eluemenor is bad but he flashes the ability to maul people.

Agree. We all knew he was raw. Unfortunately due to all the injuries and retirement by Urschel, it kind of through him into the mix. Still we probably could have avoided it if we had just played skura and not alternated them every drive. Well atleast until skura was injured.

We never should have traded for bergstrom and put skura on the practice squad - thankfully skura never got poached

It’s all about development of course because now hurst has turned into one of the most prolific pulling guards in the league and looked like an above average replacement level swing tackle

Thank god we didn’t lose a pick for it. He was awful. It will be interesting to watch Skuras development over the next couple years.

i wonder if bowanko will cost us a pick - he might not play enough snaps to count (i have no idea what the conditions are) but i dont think he's a guy who we can cut and bring back if we want to keep that pick because he's been doing well as the 6th man on the oline and im surprised he wasnt tried in stead of eluemunor early in the year

I agree that he should have been the one we used earlier. Also don’t think we will lose a pick. Believe it’s based on playing time but not sure.

We still need him to move his man off the line of scrimage. I recognise his improvement but his ceiling is always going to be low.

the reason he's pulling so much is because he's been powerful in the run game when he pulls - he will never be a bully on the line but he's certainly a starter quality player

You had me on the first part. He's made 28 of his last 34 pulls, but the issue is he's been a consistently awful tackle.

When he heads to free agency, his agent should be emphasizing that fact and claim James was out of position at tackle. As just a guard he can probably get a nice 2-3 year deal, but his 2018 team, whether the Ravens or another, shouldn't depend on him to play any tackle.

He’s been a huge surprise this season. Really happy to see him succeed with us, hopefully we can retain him on a cheap deal.

the second part was more that he wouldnt be an awful backup - the reports through the offseason were that he looked good at right tackle (despite what actual performances had shown us before then)

do you have any reference about whether that many pulls (28/34) is remarkable around the league or is it just rare for the ravens?
