Lamar Jackson

Well, to be fair, I'm pretty sure the exclusive tag is like $47M next year. I wouldn't call that "manageable" by any stretch. That's like a $25M jump year over year. I'm not even sure the salary cap itself will raise by that amount.
Agree on the second part though. If there's a tag in year 2, it's a tag and trade.
Does seem odd to call 50M manageable. I like your cap breakdown, it almost a lock looking at those numbers that a deal needs to get done before the start of 2024.

Has a player of Lamar’s caliber ever been traded in their mid 20s? This feels like something there is no precedent for
The only thing that comes to mind is CP3 going to the Clippers. The Hornets got a haul for him and he was still in his 20s

Yeah, to be honest, 2023 looks better than I thought. Even on the exclusive tag, it's feasible. There's not a lot left, but I looked around previously at all the big contracts, and obviously, there's no wiggle room there. But there's a lot of these mid tier deals for guys like Campbell, Boyle, etc. which are probably already going to be moved off of, but would be relatively easy cuts to save space for Lamar, and again, you don't theoretically lose a ton.

Highly doubt it. I don’t think Lamar is gonna sign this year, I don’t think he wants to unless the ravens offer something that crushes the figure he would get playing on 2 consecutive tags, and that’s highly unlikely.

I’ve always thought and still think he’s going the Kirk cousins route, whether or not he gets the fully guaranteed deal after the 2 tags is a whole nother story, but I think Lamar wants that 2nd tag figure and then he wants to reassess from there.
I can only hope you are wrong and I'm right, dude. I just want this shit in my rearview mirror already! The bastard won't even visit me so I could sing in his ears to accept a lower guaranteed contract and get it over with. That woman, his mother is bullheaded.

If I look ahead at the 2023 cap, and we assume it'll come in around $225M in total, Lamar's cap hit would put us over the cap by about $6M. And that's with only 43 players under contract.

The main cap savings I would see are:
Boyle : $8.3M. He's either getting an extension or is getting cut next year, regardless of Lamar's status. Can't have a $10.3M cap hit for a blocking TE.
Zeitler: $6.5M. Hard to see him as an extension candidate, so he's either a cut or a keep. If tight against the cap, cut seems likely.
Campbell: $6.5M. Imagine he retires or isn't brought back anyway.
Edwards: $4.4M. I imagine he'll be gone in almost all scenarios. Especially if he can't recover from the injury.
Clark: $3.3M. He might also be gone regardless.

So even if I exclude Zeitler for the moment, you can clear about $22.5M in cap space from releasing Boyle, Campbell, Edwards and Clark. And you can make a case you've either got replacements or can easily replace some of these guys already.

So that wouldn't make the cap in dire straights. BUT... that still only leaves you around $16M, which isn't a lot.

Now, on the flip side, if Lamar signs before then, and his cap hit for next year is, say, $30M (probably would even be less), you can still move off these guys AND have upwards of $30-40M in cap space to play with. Now the floodgates are open. You can basically sign anybody you want.

So basically it's beneficial to sign him now if I am understanding this correctly.

I remember that trade that fucked my Lakers over.

Gordon
Kaman
Aminu
1 1st round pick----this turned into Austin Rivers

That was not haul

Oddly enough the Lakers trade seemed to have been a better deal

they would have received Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic.

LOL, yes. In pretty much any scenario, from a cap perspective, it's better to sign him now. You'd be better off signing him at like $55-60M AAV now than you would letting him play out his franchise tag.

It was always going to be beneficial to sign him sooner rather than later. But it seems the FO doesn't want to go all in and Lamar is gambling that he will take us deep in the tournament this year leaving no doubt. I just hope all of this doesn't affect his performance.

Hoenstly think your spot on. Lamar’s reaction to Russel’s deal hints that the Ravens haven’t hit that level yet which is a little concerning. I would be stoked to have Lamar signed to that deal. That deal should have been on the table a long time ago for Lamar.

I don't think Lamar handles outside nosie as well as he should. I think the last thing this team needs a him worrying about his performance cause he hasn't signed a contract extension yet. We saw how he was playing super man last year.

Yeah, I agree. Seems the same happens when things don’t go well, tries to right the wrongs. He just needs to chill, not panic and play his game regardless of the situation.

Thing is, Lamar plays his game a lot, he’s just really off sometimes, and even on those days he wows you with a few plays that only he can make.

I'm going on record that if he doesn't re-sign this year, he's out the door. They might try to have him next year on the tag, but as mcjacket keeps pointing out, the scenario is feasible, but... and that's a giant but, too.

I salivate at the idea of Lamar being the QB of the team that's being built for the next 5 years, but I also salivate at the capital we would gain by trading him. As much as it would hurt to see him go, I think we'd be better than just ok by saying goodbye and good luck. Just trade him to the NFC, for goodness sakes.

Lamar is a GOD. He deserves 800 million guaranteed and the IRON THRONE since he has Targaryen blood.

That's how I see it.

Trade ain't happening until 2024.

You're probably right, but this year's draft will tell the story. If they decide that they've done the best they can trying to sign him, the number of picks for a traded star to play two controlled years gets us an even better load of picks. I tend to agree that it won't happen - if it does at all - until after next year. It could definitely happen before next season, tho. Especially if we crash out of the Playoffs early.

We could always ditch the salary cap , then Stevie boy could pay him a billion dollars guaranteed and I couldn’t care less.
