Are we really sure that Mark Davis traded Khalil Mack because he didn't have the cash flow to pay him? Like I've not seen that confirmed by anybody. I've seen a bunch of conjecture reports, but I've also seen about a half dozen explanations for it. Trading him because of cap issues or because he's a descending player makes plenty of sense.
Doesn't seem to be a "couldn't" situation. Seems to be a "wouldn't" situation. As in if I'm paying top dollar to my QB, which they were at the time, I'm not also going to pay top dollar to a pass rusher. From a cap perspective, they could have. From a business owner who wants to be as profitable as he can be perspective, maybe that doesn't make sense.
As for Burrow, they're paying Burrow. What happens after that I don't know. Maybe they don't pay Chase. It's pretty clear they're playing hard ball with Bates, who I think is one of the premier safeties in the league. I think, for me, its pretty clear that the overwhelming majority of the time, the team is going to pay the franchise QB whatever it is, and if they're cheap, they just won't pay barely anybody else. It's not that they can't, it that they won't.
