2023 DB Thread

i saw DJ say 8 CBs might go R1 and laughed

now i feel silly for laughing

It sounds crazy until you watch this group. I can absolutely see a CB being at the top of our big board when we’re on the clock. Who? Depends on which flavor/style everyone prefers.

There’s at least 2 names in the bunch that I personally don’t care for after my first watch. Porter and Ringo. I hope we stay away from those guys

Max Melton is an intriguing name I've come across so far. Definitely going to require a deeper dive but definitely some traits to work with there at first watch. Gave me some Marcus Peters feelings on quick glance. Can be a menace in man at times but also takes risks and gets burnt too often.

Agree on porter
Not got to ringo yet - he’ll be up shortly

Yeah I don’t buy the hype on those guys. Emmanuel Forbes and Clark phillips are the guys I’m really pressed on atm

now that im getting further through the CBs (still a couple of names on this list that i need to get to) but i have to say this CB class is nuts lol

Witherspoon's next up on my list

but Cam Smith and Christian Gonzalez are amazing prospects - smith is a bit lean and a little over-aggressive, gonzalez is awful in run support and isnt the most physical... but they're both elite prospects

got them stacked right on top of each other after initial preliminary grading as top 10 type talents - have smith on top right now purely because i think the ravens are gonna love his aggression and physicality but gonzalez's movement skills are outrageous and i reckon im gonna flip-flop between these two many many times before the end of April
que @Sizzle once Gonzalez misses his first tackle, he will be called a bust.

Big fan of this guy, hoping he becomes a raven but I’m hoping that comes after a trade back because I think we could get immense value moving back and still grabbing Forbes

I like both of those guys as well and if we could trade back and land one, which isn’t crazy, I would be happy.

Add Devon Witherspoon to the list of CBs who are really really fun

he might be the best of the bunch so far for me lol - maybe not quite but... even if not he's not far from that top 10 stack of Smith and Gonzalez

ravens are gonna be in love with this guy if he tests even remotely well - arm length measurements gonna be really important to help dictate just how high he goes - long-speed too (although i think he's gonna be fine here... but will need to confirm in the 40)

CB 3 right now for me - but could very easily climb up and join Smith and Gonzalez

man this CB class is fun
is Devon Witherspoon related to Akhello, the CB who is currently playing for the Steelers.

maybe i watched him in the wrong mood but i liked clark phillips but didnt love him

forbes i like a ton - love his zone instincts, maybe needs some development technically in press and man though - can open himself up off the release with aggression to get beat

Care to share what you didn’t like about Phillips?

Care to share what you didn’t like about Phillips?

was challenged with contact a little bit - not a surprise at his size but is a concern if i want to think about taking him really high

not a bunch of negatives things that i dont like - just not seeing skills/traits pop the way they do for some of the other guys and the size/physicality thing makes it tough for me to justify a top grade - but ive got him and Forbes with similar(ish) grades right now that would be roughly early 2nd round type grades

Tyrique Stevenson, the CB from Miami and younger brother of Stephon Gilmore is intriguing.

i dont hate kelee ringo but he's not getting a huge grade from me for sure

he's super young, and fairly raw - he's a project with significant upside although not sure about his non-linear explosion

currently my 7th ranked corner of 7 but still would happily take him in the 2nd round somewhere (obviously we dont have a 2nd rounder just saying that's where i have him graded right now)

He’s too stiff for my preference, I think he’ll struggle at the next level. Not a prospect I’d be happy with drafting in the first two rounds tbh but somebody will and I’ll be glad they push down another prospect to us.

i think he's a much better fit for a team that runs lots of cover 3 or cover 2 zone-under (makes sense that he's apparently working with richard sherman given his roots in that legion of boom seahawks defence)

I think Gonzalez is the most Ravens' style corner in the draft. He's in the same mold as Jimmy Smith and Humphrey. Though his ball skills might be a bit better.

idk that i agree - jimmy and marlo are both super physical and strong guys and that's just not gonzalez - i think gonzalez is a top 10 type corner with elite movement skills at his size and who's a super clean prospect as a cover corner but he's awful in run support and not super physical vs receivers through the routes

not saying i wouldnt draft him because i think he's a top 10 talent - just that i dont think he's much like jimmy or marlo at all

think cam smith is the guy they'd maybe fall in love with - aggressive, physical, great in press, also an awesome athlete, violent at the catch-point, explosive closer

and depending on how witherspoon measures and tests, maybe he's top of the list too in terms of aggression, physicality, mentality
