The 2023 Offseason Thread

Listening to Monken has me pumped. He’s a practical kind of coach that seems to understand the basics have to be in place to build to greatness. Love that he talks about playing in space, playing fast, but at the same time everything depends on the ability to run the ball.

Thought it interesting the way he answered the question about Lamar possibly holding out. While avoiding specifics he stated in no uncertain terms that relationships are built and learning occurs in the off-season. Translation…..get your contract straight and out of the way, and get yo ass to work! lol
 
Something that's ridiculously clear to me after watching the presser and the interview with Downing is that Monken sees the game extremely differently than Roman.

The way they speak is totally different too. Roman would always talk sort of from the top down. And on multiple occasions would simply say his guys need to do their job better. Not saying this is bad, but Roman was very coach speak to me and when the pressure was on he'd deflect.

Monken seems totally bottom up. Could be because he's recently spent a bunch of time with younger kids in college, but he is keenly aware of how the players think and their wants. He also seems in tune with the principles that work in this league and is committed to building a good product around what we have according to those principles. Such little coach speak comparatively to.

But they're not being drafted early. Are you even aware of where they're being drafted?
Give me the list of high end RBs drafted in the first round and what year they were drafted. Guaranteed it'll make my argument look good and your argument look bad.

I watch more games than you. That's how I arrive at the same ideas everybody else does. You take RBs early, and you don't win that often. And that's because you selected a RB over a high end player who impacts the game much more than any RB ever could.

Especially true when you factor in that RBs can simply be taken out of the game (literally standing on the sidelines) based on factors that they don't control and can't control. What other position group falls into that category?

I'm sure he'll do better if Lamar's here, but he'll still do well without him.
