The 2023 Offseason Thread

Agree on Peters and Clark. Disagree on Queen. I think they are very happy with that position right now.
For this coming season, probably. I don't see any scenario they pick up the 5th year option and keep him at that value in 2024. And if you know you're not keeping him, you either wait until then to trade him, or you trade him before. Same with Orlando Brown.

Reason I think its possible for this offseason is because of how short we are with draft picks.

Understand that for sure. Thinking it could be an in season trade next year or simply get the comp pick. Not saying it's not possible this offseason but I would guess no.

If anything, its pretty clear they're going to go cheap veterans and draft for WRs. He literally said he's not mortgaging the next few years to bring in a high profile player.

yeah as soon as he said they'd have to get creative with the cap, everyone should read between the lines and understand we're not trading for anyone or spending top money on a top guy

think if we sign lamar, then we might spend some money on someone but certainly not top money

probably gonna draft someone too but again no guarantees

he'll overhaul the position but idk that that means someone super high profile

Right, I guess what I'm saying is comp pick is only an option if you decline his option. If they pick up his 5th year for next year, I don't see any scenario where he stays with the team at that number. So they're likely to signal their strategy here one way or another in the next few months.

So basically...

Clark and Powers almost certainly gone. Peters maybe stays, but it'll have to be cheap.
Overhauling the WR room is priority #1.
Probably not many other major personnel changes on the offense.
Seems like they're committed to keeping Lamar.
Seems like John will be casting a wide net for OCs

at LG too...
we'll see how this offseason progresses at LG with interest I guess

it's a shame that we're gonna have another potential camp battle at guard for like the 4th straight season
Wonder if they just put him vs Mekari and maybe a draft pick and let them fight it out. Maybe they just make Faalele the swing tackle and have Mekari compete at LG.

yeah

no major surprises in there
but nice to have confirmation on some things for sure

Bateman, Duv, and Wallace will be here. That's a really shitty starting point to be honest. You need 2 or 3 guys to make that a nice room. Because Duv is not a real WR, a gadget guy and Wallace is a core ST who can't even stay healthy. We know one of those spots is gonna be a draft pick. It's gotta be high. The other one or 2 has to be a FA or trade.

Like to see something like
Bateman
Addison
Meyers
Duv
DRob
Wallace

But that might be asking for waaaayyy too much

Me personally, I'll be arguably as intrigued about what happens with the secondary than the WR room.

Losing Clark I think is a bigger deal than some think. Obviously you've got Hamilton, but he spent most of his rookie year as SCB. If he's staying in that role, either Geno Stone takes over (who I believe is a FA himself), or you need another Safety. If you move Hamilton to Safety, and we don't re-sign Peters, we're super thin at Corner. Got three young guys on the roster who will need to step up, and maybe that's the route, but I think Corner early in the draft is going to become very enticing if Peters doesn't re-sign and Clark is gone.

This is about as fair a read as I think you can have on that presser.

i mean maybe - they clearly dont love Mekari at G though - have been using him mostly at C and T exclusively since he started playing T - have been preferring Cleveland, Colon and basically everyone else at G

think Cleveland's got the easiest open goal camp competition he could possibly ask for
gonna have to seriously suck not to walk into that spot - the one problem for him is that he looked much better in the offence at RG than at LG with our right handed running game (pulling the LG right) - but maybe that's less important with a new OC...

i guess we'll see

either way, figures to be one of the more interesting camp battles for a true starting spot
