The 2023 Offseason Thread

Agreed on those first 2 day guys are probably not us.

With regards to the second thought about who we'll bring in, I don't think it's implausible but I'm unsure.

I really only see them as having 2 choices. Are they going to say let's make sure the defense is solidified by bringing back CC, MP, and JH.

Or are they gonna say eh we can live without those guys let's bring in whoever we want with that money and hopefully the draft and late offseason moves can fill out the roster.
Well, defensively, there's two CC's... Clark and Campbell. I don't see Clark being back at all, because he wants a significant pay raise.
Campbell either has to get extended or cut. Not sure which.
Peters will be allowed to test the market, and if its not robust, I think he could be back, but my guess is that'll be later in March.
Think John or Eric already said Houston wouldn't be re-signed until much later in FA, like last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him wait until at least May, possibly into July, to sign. He may want to skip most of OTAs and show up around camp or soon after.

Doesn't mean he signs here, but one of them alluded to the fact that he has no interest in signing anywhere right now.

In terms of big picture, they pretty much have to add at least a veteran or two in FA to the WR room. They can't overhaul the room with just draft picks, because they don't have enough of them to do that, nor will they pigeon-hole themselves into being forced to take guys in the draft at certain positions.

If anything, I think they may look to FA for WRs more than any other position. Assuming they're willing to lose Duvernay and Proche, they probably need at least 3 to the room this offseason.

Yeah CC was Campbell. Clark is probably gone. Assuming that MP and JH are not quick resigns they'll have to use their money on who's available now. So that makes sense. I'd really like to see a Campbell extension rather than cut and then add at least one real WR to the group

I feel like the Lamar situation is going to really fuck up our FA opportunity. Especially if everyone else is off on to it on Monday and we have to wait until probably after Wednesday.

Probably should focus on bringing back some core defensive veterans so we can go into the draft and get WRs and BPA

i mean it's not the end of the world
we're rarely splashing early - marcus williams is the exception rather than the norm

and the guys we're likely interested in wont be gone super early

Agreed. As long as the Lamar situation can be worked out next week or early into the following, we'll be ok

well justin houston will likely be a Summer signing anyway if he comes back so i wouldnt worry about him...

Calais we'll see about i guess

MP will be gone unless he comes in at a very reasonable price

they're gonna try and do what they always try to do which is plug as many holes with vets in free agency as they can (as reasonably priced as possible) and go into the draft with as few "needs" as possible

This team has holes to fill at WR, CB, and EDGE. To a way lesser extent at DL, S, and OG.

Retaining Campbell and Houston and retaining/replacing MP would keep a lot of those holes in check

Hilarious you post this and one hour later chuck Clark is traded

sure
i think we're retaining houston almost certainly - but we wont find out until the Summer
not sure what happens with Calais yet

but WR, CB, S depth and OG really the big holes im worried about
if we can go into the draft needing only one of WR or CB then ill be satisfied

I forgot about that fact that RB is likely to be actually only JK Dobbins. If Calais doesn't come back then the real holes becomes

WR, CB, RB, S, DL, and OG.

Well if you’re counting S as a hole then you might as well list every position on the roster lol - we need depth at S and the players we bring in there are likely to cost nothing against the cap until rule of 51 ends

Likewise DL - obviously the quality of the group takes a hit if Campbell leaves but remember we get Pierce back and a group of Pierce, Madubuike, Washington and Jones is still ok

RB might just be a case of letting Gus find out how little he’ll get as a free agent and coming back and drafting a day 3 pick and bulking out with veteran minimum vets

WR, CB and OG are the only real serious need positions

EDGE could do with some help, but again, I imagine Houston will be back in July on a 2m deal or something like that - that group could be better but it’s ok

Agreed about about DL, Pierce is a big addition. RB, I sure hope we can get Gus back.

S though, I'm not so sure. @JoeyFlex5 talking about keeping Hamilton in his role, meaning we'd actually need a SS as Stone is a MW backup

Stone is a chuck and MW backup - chuck just hasn’t missed a snap for 3 years

And we’re not looking to replace all of chuck’s snaps - Hamilton will play nickel but also play safety - we’re looking for a dime/nickel player who can play split safety in 5-6 DB looks and play

We’re not looking for a chuck replacement in terms of snaps - only in role when we’re in nickel

Makes sense!
