The 2023 Offseason Thread

Kinda big news here honestly if Stephens is gonna be playing safety. I'd naively assume he's about to take Chuck's old role. Which would in term hurt the CB depth kind of a lot.

Harbs called Sala a developmental player at this point who will take reps at G and T but on the right side. He's gonna focus on that side.

Seems like he will not even be competing for LG at this point. Meaning that's probably a 3 man race between Cleveland, Mekari, and Simpson

At first glance it seems like Mekari would be the obvious frontrunner of the group.

I'm really unsure. Is Mekari fundamentally more valuable as a 5 man sub on the bench? Is Cleveland finally ready? Is Simpson ready to plug and play in between 2 great players as a career LG who's flashed?

You don't keep one of your top linemen on the bench just in case. If someone gets hurt you can still move Mekari there and fill in the G spot with someone else. If he's better then he needs to start.

I mean he has the versatility and he’s most likely gonna be a nickel or dime which means he’s gonna play some “CB” even as a safety

Just means they’re not thinking of him as an outside CB and certainly not a starter

I mean sure you wanna play your best 5
But OG is also Mekari’s worst position… there’s a reason they preferred colon and Cleveland at guard last year over mekari

At this point he’s a swing tackle and backup C

He has 5 position versatility on game days but I don’t think he’s ever gonna be the preferred starter at guard

Yeah, that's why I said if he's better. One of the others could just beat him out for the spot.

I agree that it's his worst position - he's more about movement skills than power - he does provide a baseline of decent pass protection if he has to step in, but he's unlikely to be in the running for a starting Guard spot.

Mustipher looks like a good addition as back up Center if they can get him, because he's big enough (6'2, 332) to fill in at Guard, where the roster is a little thin with just 3 true Gs..

I hate the idea they keep floating about Fa'alele and Aumavae-Laula playing some Guard when neither is exactly polished right now - just let them learn their own position before experimenting.

I don’t mind aumavae-laula cross-training because Harbs said he’d be learning just on one side

Faalele should be staying at OT though - I like that he’s done some swing OT stuff but if he’s switching between left and right he definitely shouldn’t be playing guard too

Right now we need an LG and we might as well go ahead and try Sala out there now. We have depth with Faalele and Mekari as swing tackles plus it would be so cool to see our 6th rdr start from day 1 cuz he earned it. We have enough tackles for now.
