The 2023 Offseason Thread

Right but in most of those looks we have one or two deep safeties as well. So if they get by him, there's another defender.
Not like you're going to see many looks where we're like "hey Kyle, go man-to-man on Tyreek in the slot with no help".

Think of it this way... he was the primary SCB for the second half of the year. Do you recall him getting beat deep or getting torched in man coverage often?
With him being the primary slot guy now, id assume teams will now draw up plays vs him? I trust him guarding tightends but it would scare me seeing him vs the quicker guys..

Devin Duvernay is still not fully recovered from his injury. He said he's running and feeling good but still has progress to be made. It would be great if his inability to do anything once Bateman went down was largely attributed to his injury. Obviously it can be both.

Good to see that so far the WRs seem to like Todd, seem to like the offense, and definitely recognize it will be more pass heavy.

i like him a lot more as a WR4/5 than i do as a WR1 lol

dont think he's not got a useful skillset, just think his skillset is very limited

but like what plays do you draw up?
you have to target him on choice and option routes with explosive quick slots (which much of the NFL is moving away from anyway) and hope that he's not reading the coverage the same way the receiver is - hamilton's functional explosion and closing speed is outrageous at his size and with his wingspan - that's part of what made Hamilton special

obviously if you leave him in man coverage vs tyreek hill in a cover-0 then you're going to have problems

but i expect our 2 main slot defenders to be hamilton and humphrey this year depending on matchups

I mean maybe. Does that team have high end players they can employ in the slot to create mismatches? Not every team does. Most teams using slot pass catchers are doing more of like TE looks.
And again, in most situations, especially passing downs, he'll likely have help too. Slot play usually leads to more middle of the field routes, where there tend to be more defensive bodies (i.e. linebackers dropping into coverage, Safeties, etc.).

maybe we were wrong and Humphrey is playing slot with Peters and RYS on the outside

humphrey is gonna play at multiple spots depending on matchups
RYS is gonna play left CB
Hamilton is gonna play some safety and nickel depending on matchups

sounds like Stephens is gonna "focus" on safety, albeit that will include nickel and dime i imagine which will involve some slot defending

we've got washington and pepe who are also nickel defenders

and we've got JAD, KBK and trayvon mullen as potential outside CB depth

would definitely not be out of the question to add MP - whether MP wants to come is another matter given that it's unlikely he's going to get the volume of snaps he did last year...

our starting 5 DBs in nickel packages right now is most likely gonna be

Marlo
RYS
Williams
Hamilton
Stephens

and the only way MP majorly impacts this is if the ravens commit to having Marlo in the slot full-time which makes very little sense

just looking at the bottom of the roster and it doesnt look crazy difficult to work out a reasonable 53

becomes a little tougher if you add Houston or another veteran EDGE - which i think most of us assume is inevitable...

assuming you add Houston... and assuming you keep exactly 9 OL...

i've got 2 spots for all these guys to compete for:
Anthony Brown
Keaton Mitchell
Tylan Wallace
James Proche
Rayshad Nichols
Daelin Hayes
Del'Shawn Phillips
Josh Ross
and then whoever you consider not in the top 10 DBs on the roster...

there's a bit of a crunch there but not a crazy one

For sure. I posted this a few days ago. There will be a considerable number of guys who have played games for us that just will not make the 2023 team

Agreed and so for the first time in the Lamar Jackson era, is a real testiment to the strength up and down the whole roster

It could
But…
Could also suggest that the depth is weaker and the cuts aren’t challenging because there aren’t that many back-end of the depth chart guys who can realistically compete or that we care about…

It definitely could. But to my fan eye, it just looks like the roster is just about right top to bottom.

Like we can only really quibble from a starter to depth perspective on

LG
Backup C
EDGE depth (Houston incoming)
Outsude CB2/3 (but also you have JAD, KBK, Mullen, and Stephens in a pinch)

Everybody keeps forgetting our D line. In a present shape, it's easily the weakest part of the team.
