There were plenty of years Drew Brees didn't crack the top three in MVP voting, but I don't think a soul would dare say he's not one of the best to ever play the position.

Cant be top 3 in MVP when you are 7-9. If your team is winning though you are by default considered a candidate, hence why the only real candidates at the moment are Mahomes, Lamar, Hurts, Burrow, and Tua as those are the 5 QBs playing best on teams that are winning. They are certainly not the top 5 QBs in football (well Tua is not the other 4 are though I would also argue about Hurts) but they are the 5 QBs playing best on teams that are winning.

Edit: basically Brady was in the MVP conversation for something like 15 years in a row because he was always winning. The only year he was not was his last year in NE when they snuck into the playoffs because they were not winning as much as normal.
