I've stayed away from this site for the last while because I've legitimately been too annoyed with the self-inflicted wound that is the O Line to even get through writing a post but maybe I've moved through a few stages of grief because I feel a rant coming.
We all knew this was going to be a relatively down year due to the cap cycle, but I thought they'd use it to get things in place so that next year we'd be fielding a 2023 level roster. Instead, they seem to have used it to dig a deeper hole.
I'm going to be criticizing EDC here, but I know he's an above average GM who built a monster last season. In fact, I think that's part of the problem - he's a smart guy who has a bit of a tendency to think he's smarter than he is. (The fact that he's a practical joker shows a bit of an "I know something that you don't know" smirking superiority.) I think he got high off his own supply.
DeCosta is a great GM when he realises that a lot of luck is involved in roster construction and plays the percentages. A lot of GMs are at their worst after success because it's human nature to attribute more of your success to yourself and less to luck than is actually the case. We all do it.
If this season goes badly, he'll probably be humbled and a much better GM next off-season.
We had Moses and Zeitler on the roster for bargain prices but DeCosta galaxy-brained them off the roster for no real reason, believing he could magically draft an upgraded O line, despite not having much success in drafting O Line outside the 1st up to now. OK. I can live with that. In that case, he's definitely going to draft one in the first and then take at least one more shot later, isn't he?
He did none of that, the results look scary and he'd probably snap someone's hand off to bring in an OL player of Zeitler/Moses quality for the price we had them, if any were available.
That's before we get to the point that the O line is the very last thing you want to dick around with if you have a top QB, never mind one who's had 2 season ending injuries in the pocket. If you want to show how clever you are do it with the secondary, or the pass rush, or the receivers or anything. The other teams with top QBs understand this. We're the only ones getting careless with our most important asset.
Sorry, needed to get that off my chest.
