2018 Secondary

I really really like Canady. I really want to see how he would do starting outside. I honestly think he can be a good #2 CB and with Tavon coming back and Hill we don’t need to really look at bringing in another CB. Maybe keep Carr for depth
Carr would be too expensive for just depth. He would need to take a paycut or we could just nab one in the middle rounds.

Or at least add “Far From The” to the title.
Lol i said this soon as it was created! People thought carr was gonna somehow transfer from a bad, always getting burn cb to a stud. They also thought jefferson was gonna magically learn how to cover and be the next kam.

As a guy who thinks that Marlon is going to be a #1 corner sooner rather than later...

I'd say that he still needs significant improvement deep. As much shit as we are giving Carr right now. I don't know if Humphrey still would have shut the dude down in the fourth quarter.

Don't get me wrong.. There are certain players you look at, even with a small sample size, and you know that they're going to be a good player. Humphrey is certainly one of them... But I wouldn't say that Detriot was an aberration just yet.
I'm pretty sure it was an aberration, but agree it's too soon to know for sure.

In regards to Humphrey on Brown in the 4th quarter. He may not have completely shut him down, but he would have done A LOT better than Carr did.

And a lot of us fans know Jimmy Smith is a great corner and it hurts losing your best defensive player. But one player shouldn't go from letting up 190 passing yards a game, or whatever it was, to 500+.

btw, anymore confidence in Humphrey after this past week. I know you seemed to lose a lot of confidence in him after he was thrown on the field when Jimmy got injured.
I didn't necessarily lose confidence, my confidence level stayed the same lol, I never once thought he would be ready to be a full time starter as a rookie, and his game vs Detroit sort of confirmed that, but he seemed to be a different player when he wasn't facing a goddamn cricket like Marvin jones who can snag a jumpball in impossible circumstances.

Just like jimmy smith shut down AB every time he faced him, Humphrey shuts him down too, further confirming my comparisons of him to jimmy lol. But I am worried about him facing aj green and josh Gordon in the coming weeks, they're the kinda guys who can and will give Humphrey headaches, but speed guys, big bodied possession guys, and route runners seem to be humphreys forte. It's just those back shoulder fades and deep jump ball specialists that Humphrey is gonna struggle with.

Few things about Humphrey: he can press anyone, including AB, as he proved Sunday night, timing would've been off potentially allowing the blitz to hit home. His deep speed and hip flip is so much faster than carrs, humphrey most likely isn't trailing AB by a yard there, more likely right on his hip or possibly even recovered over the top since he knows that the dig/curl route isn't coming. I don't think it's necessarily the deep ball that beats Humphrey, just the 50/50 toss ups with great timing. Humphrey is the anti-AB, he can stymie his timing consistently and has the recovery speed to not get beat deep on a pass like that. Carr was tight but with bad positioning, I'm saying Humphrey likely would've had better positioning and not get beaten over the top

Change it to: the future of our secondary

Jimmy Smith is comming off his 3rd straight season ending injury. All are of the feet. Thats not good. Carr is also old although hes been a decent signing. Weddle isnt going to play that much longer (2 more years at best) especially if we keep winning games and he keeps eating ice cream lol. Jefferson is small and is limited in coverage.

The young guys on this unit have been our best sparks. Humphrey has lived up to his billing as the 16th overall pick. He looks every bit as good as Jimmy was comming out and probably has more potential since hes much faster, and if he stays healthy of course. Young looks promising if he can come back to the same form. Canady has come on well and deserves more playing time. Chuck clark also has been a pleasant surprise, i think he will eventually replace Levine. Clark has plenty of time to develop into more as well.

If Jimmy can come back and play as a solid #2 for a couple years while Humphrey settles into the nfl we should be ok. If Smith comes back and is no where near his old self we may need to find a #2 guy opposite Humphrey unless Canady emerges.

I still think we need a S. I just hate that there arent any true FS is this class. There are some with size, but not many that show great range and ball skills. Weddle and Jefferson (as we feared) arent good center feilders. We played single high safety all game vs steelers and we struggled big time. Help was late often; other than the few times we threw wrinkles in with Canady and Levine providing help over the top.

8-8???
Not even Ravens can finish 8-8 with what's left to play against.
Why? We are little more than a .500 team ourselves. We need to get over this idea that we SHOULD have beat this team or that team. Look at the records of the teams we have beaten and the teams we have lost to.

Why??? Because it's Browns, Colts and Bengals and they are all very bad throughout the season. At least we managed to put together few decent games.

Yet we are playing the best we’ve played all season. We are an improving team and at the right time in the season. That makes us dangerous.

know it wasn't directed towards me, but after viewing so many humpf weaknesses certainly not gonna let one satisfactory, albeit limited, showing indicate he can be a starting corner for us.

to his credit he looked for the ball some. first time I've seen him do it.

as far as the remaining games, Cleveland is poised to rain on our parade in a very embarrassing manner. we'll see how humpf looks there. Also don't expect the bengals game to be a cakewalk. they are steaming and want some "getback"

Jimmy will come back and be fine. The way he can absolutely shut down WRs at the line with his jamming technique will at least allow him to be a good #2 because achilles injuries are much easier to come back from nowadays anyway. Also, I don’t think there is a better press corner in the nfl. It’s so fun to watch him play.

I’m generally optimistic, but have to say while the offense has been on the upswing with better line play, run game and improved QB play, the receiveing corps both WRs and TEs have been exposed. And without a pass rush to speak of the defense has actually regressed. Not saying things can’t get better, but as it stands right now this is hardly a team that is improving or that builds confidence moving into a possible tournament run.

And without a pass rush to speak of the defense has actually regressed.

We were up against a good Steelers offensive line, which gets away with a lot of holds, and gave Roethlisberger all day to throw. That's what killed us more than secondary, in my opinion. (I don't really understand any anger about Carr/our secondary. Brown might be the best player in the league and we didn't have enough money to sign a free agent corner who could cover him, if one even exists.)

That said, I do think it's recency bias to overly blame our pass rush. We're 7th in total sacks this season. We do lack rushers outside of Siz but we've managed to cope with that all year.

I'm worried that our next opponents will copy Pittsburgh's tactics against our everyone's on the line/who's rushing? blitzes, however. I hope Pees has a plan to counter that.

Limited? He started full time and gave up next to nothing all night, in a night where the whole defense got shit on Humphrey was perhaps the best and most consistent player.
