Lamar Jackson, the Miscommunications, and the Refs

I’m already done with Monken. Not as bad as Roman, but dude fuckin sucks
I miss Roman year 1 Lamar when it felt like everything was new and creative. Never adapted or changed after that point. Monken is getting as predictable as Trestman. Teams know they will run with Henry and won’t with Hill. Really wish Keaton was healthy.

The good - We get to play next week

Only game 1, but Monken was terrible with his packages, telegraphing with Henry out there. And Justice Hill was 1v1 with Chris Jones on the last drive multiple times. On defense , we had linebackers guarding Rice multiple times. Slop

I think we should have known in getting Henry that he's not a plus receiver and has little ability there outside of a swing pass, but not incorporating him will mean that teams will package accordingly and it's going to mean heavier boxes consistently.
So use Henry and pass against heavy boxes

My major gripe is 13 carries for Henry. Feels like were trying to prove a point about Lamar that doesn’t need to be made. All the short stuff to Zay could be explosive , but I’d much rather have tried to get Henry in rhythm

Not worried about that

Was probably more about being down two scores and the OL run blocking

Random snippets of all 22 later and the offense really needs to work on disguise and personnel groupings. Justice Hill was on the field A LOT and only had 1 carry. When he was on the field, pass was telegraphed. Meanwhile, Lamar lines up under center and Henry deep in the backfield... it was outside zone much more often than not. If an idiot like me can pick up on those tendencies that easily, NFL teams can too. We need to get some variance in how we use those guys.

I will say up front that this was one of my biggest concerns with Henry. He just looks miscast out here based on game 1, but there's a long way to go.

Got to shout out the receiver group too. The stats may not back it up, but they were getting open late in the game when we started pushing the ball downfield. Hard to glean too much from the first half snaps because they were so heavily screen and scheme based, but I do absolutely see an opportunity for the passing game to get into a flow if/when the OL holds.

I’m not worried about the usage… yet
Think a lot of those issues were mostly to do with game script

Early in the year we’re going to have to try stuff out I think to work out what this team is gonna be good at

OL obviously the biggest flaw right now - guys should get better with time

Fuck that game script. Script it better, a script that involves Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson as a dual run threat.

Lamar’s getting cooked for his last few throws but that one to Likely in the corner, while maneuvering the pocket, was tough, and the pass to Zay looked like it was actually intended for Bateman. What the hell do I know tho

We will see them again. And to be honest I think we beat them in the playoffs. We just have to go into the game knowing not only do we have to play great football but also as clean as possible. The refs will not call a fair game so you have to beat them soundly.

He's gotta make that throw. It was a clean pocket. I'm not going to give him shit foe the "Zay" one, but that first throw should be a gimme.

Our clock management sucks too

And damn I wanted to see what we were going to run for 2

It’s tough because he was being chased from behind, had a Chief in front of him and had another Chief behind Likely so I think we was trying to place it where only Likely could grab it. Split second decision. I just can’t fault him for that

Problem is we fall behind EARLY in the game and go in panic mode. Like chillll coaches.

Why in the heck did we not use Henry in the RZ before the FG try?
I don't think Monken panics like Roman did when he falls behind.

He did overly panic about the O Line however. It was justifiable, in a way - they were struggling and the short game was needed - but I don't think he should have gone away from drop backs and called runs quite as much as he did.

Heartbreaking to lose that way, but there’s a weird sense of optimism around it.

Offensive line started out really bad and that had me really worried. They weren’t great by the end but you could see them start to settle in and Lamar had a little more trust.

Defense marred by miscommunications.

Officiating was terrible and very one sided, and that’s coming from me who rarely complains about the refs.

Will say that my one takeaway on the Chiefs is that they’re better than everyone else offensively because of that Andy Reid brain. While we’re trying to get the ball into playmaker hands, the Chiefs are out there scheming playmakers against specific defenders to get the ball in their hands. It’s truly a work of art, as much as it pains me to say it.
That's the goal of football, and the Chiefs are head and shoulders above the rest of the league (let alone the Ravens) at achieving it.

The Chiefs' offense looked and operated like a well-oiled machine.
The Ravens' offense looked and operated like the Bad News Bears.

Game 1 is in the books. The Ravens have major adjustments and changes that need to be made.

I mean game script in the sense that we fell behind by a couple of scores
I’m extremely tired of this weak excuse. The lead was never insurmountable and was very well in reach with a balanced attack up until the fourth quarter, the run was abandoned well before that, and everything was telegraphed.

The real story is, the chiefs take the lead and the coaching staff goes into an absolute panic. Every time.

Very happy with what I saw. We played like absolute dogshit on both sides of the ball. Were completely out coached. Hugely penalized. Had turnovers. Were on the road. Abandoned Henry. Etc etc and we probably should've won.

Harbaugh and Monken need to get their heads out of their asses. Orr needs to grow up really fast.

We need to be honest with ourselves about who should be out there on the OL.

I bet that's truly among one of the worst games we play this year.

Thought we couldn't win a SB. We definitely can without a doubt.
I wouldn't say that!

To me, the Ravens have one nagging issue......THEY ALWAYS GO AWAY FROM THEIR IDENTITY AND SCHEME OF RUNNING THE FOOTBALL!

The Ravens' 1st possession 'should have' laid their framework for how to deal with the Chiefs offense- keep them on the sidelines!

But once again, the Ravens went away from their identity to pound the rock (i.e. Lamar, Henry, Hill, Ricard, etc.). Henry was out on various plays.

So, the Ravens' old pattern showed up against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game and reared its ugly head against the Chiefs last night!

Those 2 games were played 7 months apart but both exhibited the same nagging issue.

That may not be a big deal to others but it is a major issue for me.

Lamar can only do so much by himself in the running game.

That's because we have extremely weak minded coaches and probably, thusly, players

Exactly! For some odd reason, the Ravens seem to constantly go away from their bread and butter of pounding the rock to beat down and wear down their opponents but instead, they choose to play into the strengths of the Chiefs (passing) once again. Typical!
