2025 Offseason Thread

lol nobody cares if they "compete" or not. There's a shit load of unemployed coaches who were really, really, really good at "competing", which is code for "we lose a lot of close games".

If you want to be 9-8 and compete in every game, Mike Tomlin is your guy. Just depends on what ambition you have as a franchise.
QB is really important and from the hobbling end of Roethlisberger, through Pickett, Duck and Russ, Tomlin hasn't had good QB play since 2018. Not many coaches could survive that, unless they're the kind of schemer who can manufacture offense from any QB.

That said, I'd want him sacked if I was a Steeler because his shortcomings would annoy me if the team was stagnant, but I think I'd feel the same about Harbaugh if we were drifting in the same way. Even good coaches need a QB to keep the fans onside.

I think he & the GM are on notice. That's why they've gone all in to try to win a playoff game, even though it seems pointless because they're not getting through the whole AFC no matter what.

I agree. I think they need a complete overhaul top to bottom. I think Tomlin has significant input on the type of roster he wants and what he wants to do as a team. And I don't think his style of play wins enough in modern football.

And as most people have figured out, in order to get the franchise QB, you either need to lose enough games to be in a position to draft them, or take a massive swing in a trade and mortgage the future to get one. And PIT hasn't been willing to do either.

That's true. They seem to favour being above average to pushing to win because being above average usually keeps everyone's jobs safe. In normal times, they would probably have won a playoff game now and then to keep criticism down. The AFC becoming a guantlet of killer QBs has messed up their job preservation strategy.

I've made the same criticism of the Ravens though, both pre and post 2018. Lamar working out made a huge difference but, even then, keeping Roman a few years too long was a symptom of preferring a high floor even after it became clear that he had a definite ceiling.

Big big retired in what 2021? I think they got mason rudolph in 2nd rnd during lamars draft towards big ben ending years then kenny pickett in 2022 with 20th overall.. i mean they have tried but it just didnt work out. I dont know when last pickett played but its only been like 2-3yrs since they drafted him. Had russ wilson one year and now arod who both are out of their prime but they arent trying to go out there and field nothing.

Steelers are a winning organization and always been. Mike tomlin is super competitive so he gonna put something together with what he have to win some games. What you stated above, browns have been doing for 20 yrs and it has yet to work out for them so yea losing enough games to be in position or trading the mortgage doesnt always work.

The Steelers are at the weird crossroads of needing a rebuild but not having a coach that wants to go that route because well... why would he? This kind of feels like the last hoorah for them if the veteran heavy approach doesn't result in anything meaningful. Since Ben retired, they've been consistently in the playoff hunt but never bad enough to be able to draft premium talent, and the results speak for themselves. The moves they made this offseason seem like a last attempt to go all-in before making some tough choices.

I mean you can partially blame it on the QB, but then again the last four years of Ben's career they were a totally irrelevant franchise. Zero playoff wins, missed the playoffs entirely twice, and largely non-competitive in both playoff losses. 2018-2021 doesn't look any different than 2022-2024. Obviously Ben missed basically all of 2019,

The Steelers are really not that much different than some of the more "winning" franchises like the Patriots, 49ers, etc. They have long periods where they're really, really good, and they have long periods where they're totally irrelevant. This be one of those irrelevant periods.

JAD got hurt today, MRI coming, that’s 2 already in the secondary the other being Adarius from mini camp. Need to stay healthy, the only real news in camp is bad news

False start penalties and JAD landing on IR.

We’re so back!

Early reps seem to suggest that the backup C is currently Corey Bullock who's repping with the 2s ahead of Samac and Dellinger right now

1st team OL is currently as expected: Stanley, Vorhees, Linderbaum, Faalele, Rosengarten

Backup C is a quiet but real competition. I've noticed a lot of 53 man projections I've seen are leaving the guys that seem to be in that competition out. Seems like the Ben Cleveland at C was a passing fad and it's between Bullock, Samac, and Dalcourt, with Dellinger getting some cross training as well.

Man i just seen chris wilikins grabbing nuts and sticking his finger in a player booty.. naw we gotta pass on him for sure. Keep that freaky shit elsewhere

Yeah.. idc how good he is.

Vibe killers not welcome.
