The Offensive Line Thread

As much as I don't like Hurst, I agree with this 100%. Brown will be out there starting soon enough, lets make sure he knows the playbook first

Too many people are pointing fingers at Harbaugh saying this is Harbaugh being Harbaugh. I don't by that at all. Outside of Stanley, Alex Lewis started as a rookie on the oline.
I think they shuffled the OL a lot and this is the best they can do if Brown is not ready to be a full-time starter yet.

So, apparently Filmstudy is unwavering in this belief that Orlando Brown Jr WILL be the starter. He thinks all the coach speak is simply BS and thinks the depth chart is flat out wrong.
I don't think the coaches said anything in reference to Hurst being better. Marty said it came down to experience and it points to something Brown admitted himself and it's the fact that he still has a lot to learn in terms of the play-book and language. I'm sure once he catches up to speed they will make the adjustment.

2013 had a lot of different issues though. We didn't aquire Monroe until mid-season and K.O suffered a season ending injury. If we had a line of Monroe-K.O-Gradowski/Shiply(Yeah they both suck)-Yanda-Oher, then I don't think the line would've been nearly as bad. Obviously the OL we had to begin with was horrible but I think we overestimated Mckinney and Oher after their spectacular playoff performances.

We literally had an OL with only two players worth starting and one of them ending up missing the entire season.
A couple things-

Monroe was just before week 4 and started week 5 on. Kelechi Osemele started the first seven games. We got to see three games of Monreo-KO-Gradkowski-Yanda-Oher.

Now, how much of Osemele's poor play in 2013 (he really wasn't that great) can be attributed to the injury? I'm not sure, honestly. He was new to LG, so maybe that had something to do with it? I didn't think the injury started creeping up for him until week four-ish, but don't quote me on that.

Yanda had arguably the worst season of his career, especially in recent memory. Was this due to being sandwiched between Gradkowski and Oher? I'm not sure. I can't remember if he had injuries or not in 2013 after the season. I know he played in all 16 games.

I just completely worry about how bad Skura is. The last time we saw Hurst play tackle in live games, he gave PFF their two worst graded games ever.

Hopefully, Brown will be ready to start against the Bengals because if we have Hurst starting against them then Flacco might die. I think we'll be okay against the Bills even though I still don't like it...

Brown won't learn anything new in 4 days between Bills and Bengals games. As it stands now, he is about 5 times better tackle than anybody else on the team, Hurst in particular.

He needs to start now and continue learning through games.

He’s much better than Hurst but if in fact Brown hasn’t learned the whole playbook yet you just simply can’t put him out there. He can’t learn the playbook in games.

Ronnie Stanley dislikes this statement because he's far and away the second best player on the oline who will likely make a pro bowl in the near future if he keeps developing at a steady rate.

But I agree, besides Stanley, Brown is significantly better than everyone else on the roster. You could make a convincing argument he's the third best lineman and Lewis has come a long way by the looks of it.

This line is a center away from being among the best in the league when Brown is ready to start.

I'm talking about right tackle spot, obviously.

You don't have to throw entire playbook at him in a single game, particularly not against the opponent like the Bills.

We don’t know how much he’s got down or if he could be a liability because of it.

Trust me I want Brown playing as much as anyone but I’m just trying to justify starting Hurst...ugh

Haha, maybe you should stop trying - it's impossible. Hurst might have playbook down to sing it if you wake him up in a middle of the night but what's the playbook good for if you have no ability to execute the plays?

Austin Howard is a FA again who went through an NFL training camp and could likely come in for pennies on the dollar to provide a very very short term stopgap at RT until Brown is ready. He already knows the system and we could keep Hurst at G where he honestly belongs and move Lewis to C, and then cut Howard again if we like.

I know Howard wasn't quality last year, but literally anyone is better than Hurst at RT.
