There are more than a few examples of Andrews blocking and doing his job last year. He's willing, he's smart, he has the frame and he'll get better.

I would never have thought this .

I’m sort of surprised at the size of the contract given I’d think we want him to ultimately be 3rd on the TE depth chart.

I'd argue that TE is one of those positions on the Ravens where the depth chart doesn't really matter. 1-3 are going to play a lot regardless and even 4 is going to get some time if he's good enough.

Another peculiar pattern - turns out when we draft 2 TEs, the one picked later gets second contract and the earlier one is a bust

Dickson / Pitta
Maxx / Boyle
Hayden / Andrews (?)

In regards to the Boyle deal. At first glance the 18m seems high, but there could be a bunch of deferred guaranteed money in the form of roster bonus, which would allow for an easy exit from the contract. I'm also hoping there is language protecting them from his 2 PED suspensions within the contract. Another thing to consider is that the entire first years salary is most likely part of that 10m in guarantees.

Another thing to consider is having a 3 year contract is much better than a 5 year backloaded deal due to the fact it leaves less dead money.

Although none of us have seen the contract details, I think it's going to be easier to stomach than the overall 18m number. That's just my take.

Since 2014, ravens have used a 1st, 2nd, two 3rds, and a 5th on TE’s as well as three significant multi year contracts to Pitta, Watson and Boyle. Wow

you forgot the 5th rounder they used in conjunction with the 2nd rounder that they traded to Arizona to move up and draft Williams. Overall it's not bad at all....see below

1st Haydon Hurst (jurry is out- think he will be very good)
2nd Maxx (never lived up to expectations but has been a good run and pass blocker)
3rd Mark Andrews (going to be a stud)
3rd Crockett Gilmore (injuries derailed career)
5th Nick Boyle (one of the best pass blockers in the league)
5th (additional pick used in trade up for Maxx)

Watsons contract was reasonable and he was the leading receiver on the team
PItta -- no one could have seen that injury coming
Boyle -- lets wait for the details of the contract before panning it.

not so bad, if you ask me.

I guess you could throw a 6th in there too for converting Waller to TE.

I know Eric has been talking significantly about analytics... I say we need to be careful about how we approach that issue. Analytics are a great tool, but tape is end all be all. A player like CJ Mosley has an impact on the game far beyond what analytics and comprehend. The tape shows that. And if we let CJ Walk because of analytics that's dumb. Insanely idiotic and it will scare the crap out of me for the next four years. A player of that capacity due to his sheer intelligence alone is going to be difficult to replace. We all saw how the defense fell apart when CJ left.

We need to get that deal done.
