Signings, Cuts, Trades

Too much money for an aging vet. Do you really honestly think the only thing keeping teams from trading for him is injuries?? Teams take bigger chances on much worse. Laughable honestly to think that’s the reason
I think injuries plus the depressed cap, like I said. Otherwise Atlanta would get a 1st + a mid round pick probably. And he's not just any old aging vet; he's the aging best receiver of his generation whose play hadn't fallen off by anywhere near enough to be writing him off like this except for injury concerns.

But like I said, all things considered, I don't want him as a Raven right now. I'm on the Houston hype train.

I’ve come to the realization that we aren’t a Julio Jones away from a Super Bowl title. A WR isn’t going to carry you to a championship. I hope our added weapons, better protection and better passing concepts can take us all the way. I wouldn’t doubt it if Lamar gets his second MVP this season quite honestly, but he needs to be able to make all of the throws before we hand him a blank check because athleticism only lasts so long for a QB. This season is going to tell us quite a lot about Lamar, in my opinion.

And I think everyone here knows I’m a Lamar Stan

I think we were a competent OL and a serviceable plan B on offense away last year. Hopefully we've fixed that but the ball is really in Roman and Lamar's court to make it happen now.

Although we do potentially have pass rush problems now.

That strain of the good shit is helping you think logically LOL

Exactly this. It’s up to Lamar and GRo to decide how great we want to be. I really hope Lamar can develop tremendously as a passer this coming up season because I don’t just want him to make some of the throws, I want him to make ALL of the throws with the accuracy needed to win a championship

As far as the pass rush, I think we’ll grab Houston, unless the staff is absolutely enamored with Odafe

Maybe we can send Sammy to Atlanta when we trade for Julio lol
I hated the signing to begin with, and if he starts dropping shit during the season, I’ll lose my shit even more lol

Yeah if I look hard in the mirror I have to admit that I'm not super hopeful for Sammy Watkins. Then again, he's really only here to make a couple of clutch catches when somebody stops the run in the playoffs.

If he’s not injured lol. Obviously don’t want to see Sammy fail in a Ravens uni, but I don’t have much hope for him. Will probably be a free agent again next offseason. I know a lot of people here hate him but I won’t stop saying it: JuJu would’ve been perfect for this offense and I’m extremely bummed he turned us down

Regarding veterans, I literally don't care about drops during this time. Once preseason comes around, I'll be switching up that energy.

Has Sammy ever been known for drops? Anyone know?

$20M guaranteed for two years. It also cost very little from a trade perspective, and Campbell plays a more important position than WR. Plus, we didn't have three first round picks on the Dline when we acquired him.
Having three 1st or 10 first at wr means nothing if they arent enough to help the team. Campbell plays a more important position but he was 34 and was declining, only ravens fans thought he wasnt. Dnt get me wrong, im fine without having julio because of what we have now but lets stop pretending like this man aint worth a 1st rnd for a contending team. If we didnt have bateman or watkins, im sure most of us would be ok with going hard for julio.

I never said he wasn't worth a first. I would give up a late first for him in a second if I was a WR needy team with the cap space to do it. I don't think the Ravens are a WR needy team, nor do I think we have the cap space for it, so its kind of moot in my eyes.

If I were brutally honest about it (which I am), I'm not sure fans are even vaguely in a position to be determining "trade worth" or even contract worth of players. Like we had people on these very boards who were throwing out opening volleys for an Orlando Brown trade at like two first round picks. That was real. It happened. And he was a young, ascending, healthy player, at a premium position, on a rookie contract still. It doesn't get much more "valuable" than that. And guess what... nobody even got in the stratosphere of offering that.

So if the Falcons don't get a first round pick for him, then guess what? He wasn't worth it. Worth, by definition, is whatever somebody is willing to give you for something. That's true of contracts, and its true of trades also. Its not like they're going to turn down a better trade, unless the trade is coming from their own division, which seems incredibly unlikely.

My understanding from multiple beat writers is we inquired about Julio's availability and price tag before we ever drafted Bateman. I don't think Watkins has anything to do with it. And the price tag we were told was higher than what Eric wanted to pay, which is why he wasn't traded here. I have no idea what that price tag would be. In a normal year, I would suspect Eric would have had zero reservations giving up #27 or #31 in this draft class for Julio. But we couldn't, because the trade wouldn't be finalized until June, and because we still, probably, don't have the cap space to bring him in anyway. I think Eric would have a done a bunch of things to create cap space if he could get the trade that he wanted. But that didn't happen, and here we are.

Here's what I would say...
If all goes as planned, Sammy should be the #3 WR. He should be playing less snaps than both Bateman and Hollywood. If he's not, I think that's probably a knock on Bateman, or an injury happened.

The #3 WR in this offense is probably playing like 40-50% of offensive snaps, and maybe even less, if they're rotating somebody like Boykin as a run blocking WR. That could put Watkins down in the 30-40 snap range. If that's the case, I think durability issues could be lowered.

People need to realize... in KC, just last year, he was playing a TON of snaps. In the 10 games he played, he was over 70% like 8 times, and one of the games I believe he left early with injury. KC runs a LOT more 3 and 4 wide sets than the Ravens have. Maybe that changes, but I don't think it changes that much, given that Boyle will be back and we love two TE sets and utilize a FB as much as anybody.

So if Watkins is playing more than like 50-60% of the snaps, to me, it's either because he's playing over Bateman (which would be a knock on Bateman), somebody else is injured, or we're playing from behind a lot and need to throw. In pretty much all of those cases, it won't be by design mostly.

Talent-wise, Julio is a first round pick trade in a second, but the money he's paid for the next two years is the issue, so the deal has to be balanced by reducing the trade round - at least that's how I look at it. Either that or ATL agrees to pay part of the money to balance with getting a 1st rounder. I would still love to see him here, but there is probably another D lineman of some sort in our future instead.

The longer ATL waits, the less they are going to get, imo.

i mean the money he's owed is great value for a WR of his calibre - the issue is that with the pandemic, cap is tight so it takes some manoeuvring to do it - otherwise it would be a no-brainer to send a 1st their way for him

The injury is the only reason teams aren't throwing picks at Julio. Talent wise and contract wise he's a no brainer and in a normal cap year the Falcons would get a 1st + more.

The only reason I don't want him in Baltimore is our limited resources and bigger needs. In a vacuum, give me Julio.

in a vacuum, give me julio RIGHT NOW!!!

i dont care that he's coming off an injury, he still looked like a superstar when he was on the field last year
