The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Raiders Week 1 Edition

2015 was the last time we lost a season opener, also on the road against an AFC West Opponent. 2015 also saw injuries all over.... this seems like we are heading for a repeat.

Mark andrews is not remotely close to Darren walkers level or evens crotch. That’s something I wrongly argued all off season. You have to make ANY of those damn catches, only time he’s ever done anything clutch was vs Cleveland.

Always happens..... we give out a new contract and that player gets hurt or doesn't live up to the new money.

Have to give Raiders their props, they played a helluva game on both sides of the ball. And that stadium was rockin’, hope our fans match that level next week.

Lamar looked like a different QB for much of the game, passes were tight and on target. A lot to be excited about there, but he’s gotta protect the ball better.

I just can’t understand why we continue to fill O line positions mostly as an afterthought. Been a problem for years, baffling for such a savvy FO.
I think we’re seeing the downside to decostas philosophies. All these analytics say that early draft picks should be used on the more flashy prospects, well now we have no OL to speak of and our qb might die behind it.

that is outrageous - i get it with stanley (he just isnt back yet) but my god...

i thought last year's OL was bad and we seemingly upgraded

the other thing i noticed was that Zeitler seems to hitch before a lot of the running plays idk if it's a true tell but it seemed to correlate

Absolutely noticed it with zeitler myself. It’s glaring and really jumps off the screen even when you aren’t watching the OL

I watched a big choke job once again last night. Up 14-0? Ok, don’t lose that lead. If you do, you’ve choked. Up 3 with 37 seconds left? Ok, don’t lose or you’ll be choking. This team has choked numerous times in the last 3 years. Sure we’ve got problems but what team doesn’t? If we’ve got problems that big, we shouldn’t even be up in the first place

Lack of quality Oline play is a league-wide problem, though. That's why a lot of the teams actively trying to upgrade it are doing so via FA.

Very few positive things to say, but here's what I saw that was "good" (loosely)...
1. I thought the INTERIOR Oline was fine. Not good, not bad, just fine. Certainly good enough to win.
2. Run defense largely looked fine.
3. Thought we tackled pretty well for the most part and we were hitting hard.

That's not much.

As for the bad, too long a list, but here are the highlights...
1. Both our Tackles sucked
2. Lamar was erratic throwing the ball, per usual.
3. The running game looks completely different to me. A lack of practice time and injuries I think limits what we're doing there. Not much happening at the mesh points, not much deception. Really just a variation of running out of Power I at this point.
4. Pass rush was pathetic. Will go nowhere if we have to blitz AND still don't get there.
5. Secondary clearly misses Peters, though I think they'll improve. They weren't the reason for the loss.

I would say it was probably the worst 30-40 minutes of gametime coaching I've seen from Wink Martindale. He was thoroughly outclassed in the 2nd half. He made precisely zero adjustments I saw. He basically stood out there and said "we're a man, blitzing team, so we're just going to play man and blitz all night". It failed, and failed miserably. It was reminiscent of KC last year, where we refused to adapt and Mahomes shredded us.

Outcoached and outplayed. And the game was close. Tells me we have more talent and need to improve.

This is true, and if this is the case then we need to be much more active in our attempts. The last OTs we drafted were tyre philips and Orlando brown and Greg senat, and philips is obviously viewed as a guard by us, so we haven’t truly drafted a tackle since 2018 all the while OT depth has been a glaring need and now the starters have become a glaring need as well.

I trust Stanley to get back to form, if he doesn’t we are royally fucked and it might tank the whole Lamar Jackson era ravens with his contract. We all knew for years that we were gonna run into a huge problem with our tackle depth down the line, and here we are.

Hollywood and Watkins looked very good, so there’s a bright spot. When Bateman returns we should be looking at a very good wr corps, duvernay is barely a warm body as a receiver though so that sucks, and what sucks even worse is that OF COURSE as soon as we get a potentially competent wr corps our entire OL and run game is in shambles. I’m

Idk that it’s analytics telling him not to draft OL - just think they haven’t liked any of the options available when picking

analytics would have told us not to pick dobbins... and maybe not queen either...

So i think it's fair to say this game was everything we all knew and have spoken about many times.

1. Lamar is a special talent and still capable of jaw dropping plays.
2. Lamar still leans on poor mechanics resulting in inaccurate throws. Just not acceptable at this stage of his career.
3. This O line maybe the worst in the league.
4. The pass rush is nonexistent without blitzing.
5. The D line will be strong against the run.
With all that said i think were more than capable of a 9 win season. However, seems highly unreasonable to expect this team to beat the best in the league come playoff time. Next week will tell us where we truly stand...

I wonder who will line up against Villanueva ? Yikes .

think he might have been hurt after a massive hit he took

Yeah he looked off after taking the pop. Almost like he slowed to brace himself, then never came back after the shot

I knew Villanueva could struggle, but I don't think anyone expected him to be that bad. It was shocking to see how easy he was beaten. Dishearting for sure because I'm a big fan of his previous play and all has military service.

Well I mean at this point tackle "depth" is a fairy tale, because I'm not sure I could find 2-3 teams in the league that have tackle depth. Over half have below average starters. We certainly need an upgrade at RT, no question though.

I think they had every intention of making Phillips a Tackle. He just sucked last year, and they didn't have enough confidence in him this year to give him the job (obviously). But they did sign two Tackles in FA (although one is largely out for the year). So from my perspective, they've drafted or signed 2-3 guys in the last call it 18 months who can play that position. Problem is... they've all sucked.

I'm not going to blame DeCosta for his draft approach. It would be hypocritical for the fans to do the same. We are well over a decade since fans started screaming for the FO to start taking shots at WR and skill position players in the early rounds, since we historically didn't do it at nearly the levels other teams did.

The #1 priority for the fanbase, almost unanimously, for the offseason, was getting WR upgrades and getting pass rush upgrades. Tackle was probably third. We made strong attempts at the first two, and time will tell if they pay off. The latter fell by the waste side, and now we see it.

I said going into the offseason that the number of "upgrades" needed was more than the Ravens could actually obtain. And that looks pretty spot on after a whopping one week. Injuries play an unavoidable factor, but this Oline is as healthy as it will ever be at the moment, and they played terrible.
