Just as you say they pass more these days different era and all that, but back in Alan page days there were no quick release offenses, it was run, run, under center deep drop and bombs away on third down, no shotgun, no moving pockets, no complex blocking schemes, and the average offensive lineman was 50 lbs less than the average OL today. Back then, the great players absolutely dominated in a much weaker pool of talent, they stood out easier, today it’s a prerequisite to even make it in the nfl outside of qb/k/p to be a world class freak athlete, so much so that players who would outsize and outrun athletes in every league in the world flame out in the nfl every year.I didn't say he wasn't, but to say hands down he is without even considering players like Alan Page who put up big numbers and in 14 game seasons, plus had go back and check Alan Page's numbers. He had one season with 18 sacks in a 14 game season and in his career he had 148 sacks. Those 148 sacks also come in an era where they weren't passing as much. I've watched both of these guys play and both of them are / were dominant at their positions. Both of them are GOATs.
Just as you say we need to stop over glorifying past players, I'm going to say we need to stop bringing up current day players and automatically say they are the best. Most people on these boards haven't even seen the past players who were generational talents in their own right.
I'm still not convinced Brady is the greatest of all time, but I don't compare QBs from different eras. It was a different time, they passed the ball less, the defenses had different rules to defend offenses, which limited the numbers. I'd put Montana and possibly Sammy Baugh up their with Brady. I have Sammy Baugh as one of the greatest players of all time, period.
Aaron Donald would average 20 sacks a year back then
and considering Baugh to be anywhere close to Brady further proves my point. No qb who played in those days could hold Brady’s drawers
